Malaysian violin makers strike gold, bringing pride to the nation
Tan Joven's story reads like a fairy tale of passion and perseverance. Just three years ago, she packed her dreams and headed to Cremona, Italy – the holy grail of violin making – to master her craft. The young artisan, who once amazed everyone by completing her first violin in just four months, has now conquered the international stage.
At the 19th International Violin Making Competition on June 8, Joven's hands trembled not with nerves, but with excitement as she claimed the Gold Medal for Viola and Silver Medal for Violin in the non-professional category. For a first-time competitor, this double triumph feels nothing short of magical.
'I'm more motivated than ever,' beams Joven, her eyes sparkling with the same intensity she brings to crafting each instrument. Her success proves that with dedication and the right guidance, even the loftiest dreams can become reality.
Behind every great student stands an extraordinary teacher, and Tan Chin Seng embodies this perfectly. The seasoned craftsman, who has spent over 15 years turning wood into music, achieved something no Malaysian had ever done before – winning Gold in the professional category at this prestigious competition.
His winning viola, lovingly named 'Madani,' carries deeper meaning than its beautiful sound. The name reflects his heartfelt hopes for Malaysia's continued prosperity and progress, making this victory not just personal, but patriotic.
Chin Seng's journey hasn't always been smooth sailing. After his initial international success in 2019 with double gold in the non-professional category, the pandemic forced a four-year break. But like a true champion, he returned stronger, collecting three medals in 2023 and 2024 before achieving this career-defining moment.
This isn't just a tale of two individuals – it's the story of a growing Malaysian violin-making dynasty. Chin Seng's other students, Chang Song Jie and Sam Wong, have also tasted international success, proving that this mentor has the golden touch when it comes to nurturing talent.
The competition, organised by Italy's National Association of Violin Making Art (ANLAI) and held during Bulgaria's enchanting Rose Festival, brought together over 70 handcrafted instruments from 12 countries. Under the watchful eye of jury chairman Giorgio Scolari, a renowned Italian violin maker, Malaysia's representatives stood tall among the world's finest craftspeople.
Currently displayed at the Rose Museum in Kazanlak, these award-winning instruments represent more than just wood and strings – they're ambassadors of Malaysian craftsmanship, telling the world that excellence knows no borders.
As the roses bloom in Bulgaria's valleys, so too does Malaysia's reputation in the rarified world of violin making. Thanks to Joven and Chin Seng, the melody of Malaysian success now echoes through concert halls and competitions worldwide, inspiring a new generation of artisans to pick up their tools and chase their own golden dreams.

Sora Ma holds memorial service for late husband: I have never stopped missing u
In a post on Instagram Stories on Aug 1, Sora Ma wrote that due to her husband's sudden passing, she did not have time to notify many friends at the time. Photos: Sora Ma/Instagram Actress Sora Ma wrote a sentimental post on social media for her husband, as she held a memorial service for him one year after his death. She married the Singaporean businessman in 2021 and the couple held their wedding the following year. Ma, 41, gave birth to their son Skye in August 2024 and disclosed in December that her husband had died suddenly in June. He was in his late 40s. The Malaysian-born actress became a Singaporean in January. In a lengthy post on Instagram Stories on Aug 1, Ma wrote that due to her husband's sudden passing, she did not have time to notify many friends then. She therefore held a memorial service on the first anniversary of his death, and attached a black-and-white photo of the event. 'In the past year, even though you are no longer with us, I still feel that you are with me and our child, learning and growing together,' she wrote in Chinese. 'We (our friends and I) never shy away from anything related to you. Instead, we prefer to talk openly about your kindness to everyone, as well as the warmth and influence you brought to everyone. This is our way of remembering, mourning and healing.' Asked by a friend how she managed to get through the difficult time, she said she and her late husband loved each other without regrets. 'When you were alive, we never hesitated to express our love,' she wrote. 'We always gave each other the deepest care and companionship until the very end.' She added: 'I have never stopped missing you every festival and every special moment.' She said she would use her husband's thoughtful and considerate love for her over the years to raise their child. 'I often tell my friends that the love you had given me over the past 11 years is more than enough for me to raise Skye well,' she wrote. Ma noted that many people who have benefited from her husband's kindness came for his memorial service. 'I thought you were good and gentle enough, but after hearing everyone share their stories and watching your videos, I realised you were so much better than we could have imagined. I'm so proud of you,' she wrote. 'The good deeds you did in your life, the light you radiated – all of them deserve to be remembered. This world is truly a better place because of you. Please continue to be brave and kind in the other world. We will always love you.' Ma recently held a celebration for her son's first birthday, inviting her celebrity pals such as Zheng Geping, Hong Huifang, Chen Xiuhuan and Apple Hong. Ma posted on Aug 2 several photos with her son from the past year on social media, with the caption: 'Month of August, month of Leo Baby.' 'One year ago, he changed my life forever,' she wrote in English, using the hashtag #SkyeIsOne. 'From sleepless nights to heart-melting cuddles, this first year of motherhood has been the fastest, slowest, most beautiful ride.' She added: 'Thank you, baby, for coming into my life, for pulling me out from the darkest days, and leading me into the warmest sunlight I've ever known. I'll spend the rest of my life learning, growing and loving beside you.' – The Straits Times/Asia News Network

(Video) Pan Mei Chen Couldn't Perform In Malaysia For Years Because She Was Betrayed By Protégé
Over the weekend, Taiwanese singer Pan Mei Chen (潘美辰) performed at Arena of Stars, marking her long-awaited return to Malaysia. During the show, she candidly revealed why it took her nearly a decade to return for a performance. The Mandopop star performed at Arena of Stars on 2nd August 2025 (Saturday) as part of her 'Returning Home' World Tour. Since the show marks her first concert in Malaysia after eight years, the audience was mostly fans who had been waiting a long time to watch Pan Mei Chen perform live. While international stars have many reasons for not performing in a country, the singer said her reason for not returning to Malaysia was very personal. The singer revealed that she had signed a Malaysian singer to her agency many years ago and had planned to bring him to Taipei to debut. However, the singer secretly entered a singing competition without Pan Mei Chen's consent. Shockingly, the singer claimed not to know the Mandopop icon and even blocked her contact after winning the contest. Understandably, the experience of being betrayed by her beloved mentee traumatised Pan Mei Chen. The singer-songwriter said she couldn't set foot in Malaysia for many years because she felt betrayed by her former protégé. The singer never revealed what changed her mind. However, it's possible that her fans in Malaysia helped encourage Pan Mei Chen to return. During the concert, the star made sure to interact with her fans as much as possible, even walking amongst the audience to get closer to fans. Throughout the night, Pan Mei Chen performed all her classic hits, including her most popular track, 'I Want A Home'. As the concert came to an end, the star thanked all the fans who attended, as well as some special guests. She also expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards her fans in Malaysia, saying, 'You must remember that I, Pan Mei Chen, have never forgotten Malaysia. This is from the bottom of my heart.' Pan Mei Chen also promised to return to Malaysia more often, saying she won't take another eight years to perform here again.
