Discover NYC's hidden history of enslavement at these new augmented reality memorials
As part of the city's Arts in the Park initiative, Brown's " Slavery Trails" takes historical sites that are tied to slavery and crafts them into digital memorials using sculpture and AR that visitors may access via mobile device. Manhattan will house two exhibitions while Brooklyn and Queens will showcase one; "merging technology, music and history into public memory spaces that honor the enslaved and challenge contemporary narratives," according to a press release about the exhibition.
Manhattan's two sculptures are titled "The Slave Market: Wall Street" and "New York Slave Conspiracy of 1741. Brooklyn and Queens work together to tell "American Gold III" and "American Gold IV," respectively.
In Manhattan, "The Slave Market: Wall Street" makes visible the enslaved Africans and Native Americans who were bought and sold during the 1711 New York slave market. The second installation in Manhattan, titled "New York Slave Conspiracy of 1741," brings attention to the mass hysteria in response to mysterious fires which led to the execution and exile of primarily Black and enslaved New Yorkers. Both are located in City Hall Park in Lower Manhattan.
In Brooklyn and Queens, "American Gold III & IV" debut golden sculptures of enslaved people overseas on slave ships in the Middle Passage. The Brooklyn artwork is located at Bush Terminal Park; in Queens, find the artwork at Astoria Park.
"My mission is to create artworks that educate the public on important issues while crossing media and societal boundaries," Brown said on his website. "As an artist with enslaved African ancestors, I feel a responsibility to use my work to tell their stories. To create new works that empower and bring everyone together. I see my role as an artist as a technical, scholarly, and performative one."
I feel a responsibility to use my work to tell their stories.
Each piece comes equipped with more information available via mobile device and merges site-specific research with AR sculpture and sound. Brown's goal with the works is just a small part of a larger endeavor to create a decentralized memorial to slavery in the United States. His new pieces will help to tell New York City's often overlooked history with slavery.
Slavery Trails is not only AR interactive, but musically interactive as well. These two art forms are combined with deep historical research and produce a participatory memorial which centers the slavery narrative specifically on the enslaved peoples and their efforts at resistance.

Line of Duty stars spark new episode rumours as they reunite for night out LINE OF DUTY TEASE Vicky's news comes just days after Line of Duty fans were thrilled when two of the show's biggest stars dropped massive hints that the show will return next year with a seventh series. The show about a police anti-corruption squad weeding out bent coppers, has been a ratings hit for the BBC since it first aired in 2012. But there hasn't been a new series of the smash hit series since 2021 - with many fans disappointed about how it ended. However, this week leading men Martin Compston who plays DI Steve Arnott and Adrian Dunbar who plays Supt Ted Hastings on the BBC one cop thriller revealed an update on season 7. 5 The news will thrill fans left disappointed by the limp ending of the police drama's last series Credit: AP The Sun exclusively revealed in April that the ratings hit would be returning for a long-awaited seventh outing in 2026, with filming starting in the first half of the year. Talking this week on the Nicky Byrne podcast, actor Martin was asked whether he'd be taking part in Sport Aid next May. He replied: "I think, already, I know I'm filming next year. This will be a pretty good one this next show." Asked by Nicky if he could give him the exclusive on what it is, Martin replied: "Not on this I think most people can have a guess though." Meanwhile Adrian was talking on Wednesday on Radio Ulster and was also asked about Line of Duty, which is filmed in Belfast, where the radio station broadcasts from. The actor said: "We're all keeping our fingers crossed, just waiting on the BBC to make an announcement. "I know Jed's working away. And I know me and Vicky and Martin really want to do it. So hopefully next year we'll be back in Belfast and rattling around the town making a nuisance of ourselves. "The wheel is turning on that. It's just down to the BBC to make an announcement."

Waverley's Game store to close as Ashley pulls back from high street
Mike Ashley, pictured, whose Frasers Group has closed a number of Game stores across the UK recently Good news, and not so good news, at Waverley Market this week. Notices have gone up in the windows of GAME that they will be closing in September. This was a surprise to me as the shop always seemed busy and had very knowledgeable staff. If what I have heard is true the only stand alone GAME that will be left in Scotland will be in Glasgow, and while the Edinburgh shop located within Sports Direct will remain open, they will continue without any staff dedicated to GAME sales. It is a great shop unit just along from Avalanche and I doubt it will be empty for long once they leave, but I've always felt they were a good fit with what we do along with Anime Republic and Damaged Society. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Unlike record shops, which managed to outlast the threat of downloads and then streaming computer games, shops are now trying to trade in a world were the vast majority of games are downloaded. While they have done well to keep going by selling related merchandise clearly GAME's owners – Mike Ashley's Frasers Group – have decided to not completely throw in the towel but certainly pull back from having a strong high street presence. It is maybe telling that the closure notice does not ask customers to visit the remaining Edinburgh shop but instead suggests they visit the GAME website. In better news the old Body Shop unit in the centre has been transformed into a glittering jewellery shop by the Edinburgh-based business Fairy Made and while I can give no judgement on their wares it is good to see a local business giving it a go in these tough times for most retailers. Due to open very soon they were beaten to the post by a gents barbers opening on Thursday. While not located in a shop unit but in one of the two pop-up spaces opposite the Waverley Bridge entrance, they are I am told not a pop-up business and intend to be there permanently much like the Beauty Boutique and Mobile Plus are in the centre of Waverley Market. Again I have no idea what the demand might be for a barbers like this though I have always said the centre needed a hairdressers shop as well as a shop offering tattoos and piercings, so while this is maybe a scaled down version of what I was thinking, this is not their first venture and they have already been successful in other shopping centres so only time will tell. One thing I always warn potential businesses about when looking to move into the centre is that Waverley Market is not like other shopping centres, and I feel that is an advantage it has so long as the businesses are right for the footfall, which includes a lot of families visiting both from the UK and abroad and couples visiting Edinburgh for a long weekend. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad As I was getting the train home on Thursday a headline in this very paper caught my eye. 'Shock in Edinburgh as sudden closure sees Evans Cycles vanish from Fountainbridge'. It seemed odd as the owners were blaming their landlord who had served notice for them to close. Odd that is until I saw the owners were Mike Ashley's Frasers Group.

"At Breakneck Comedy, we're all about bringing big names to smaller places, so as well as cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeen, we make sure that our schedules include smaller towns and venues that don't normally get included in tours. "I'm delighted that we've been able to add some new venues and locations to our list with Dane's tour. "For us, it's all about bringing comedy to as many people as possible and finding new venues and spaces that we can bring the laughter to." The tour begins in Aberdeen on Friday, September 12, and concludes in Banchory on Sunday, September 21.
