Wrexham to face Southampton in their first second-tier game for 43 years

CNA2 days ago

Wrexham's quest to reach the Premier League next year will begin with an away trip to Southampton on August 9 after the English Football League fixtures were released on Thursday.
The North Wales club, co-owned by Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds and fellow Hollywood A-lister American Rob McElhenney, will play their first English second-tier game for 43 years.
Reynolds said it had felt like an "impossible dream" to get the club to the Premier League, but after three successive promotions they are now just one league away.
Wrexham's popularity has sky-rocketed on both sides of the Atlantic due to the North American owners and the smash hit "Welcome to Wrexham" documentary.
Their first home match will be against West Bromwich Albion.

Former Ferrari boss Montezemolo becomes a McLaren Group director

LONDON :Former Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo has joined the board of historic rival McLaren, a move that would have been unimaginable not so long ago. A filing with Companies House by Abu Dhabi-owned McLaren Group Holdings, which controls Woking-based sportscar maker McLaren Automotive, registered Montezemolo as a director on June 27. The 77-year-old Italian joined Ferrari in 1973 as founder Enzo Ferrari's assistant and became team manager in 1974, a year before the late Austrian triple champion Niki Lauda secured his first title. He also presided over the Formula One team during a golden era when Michael Schumacher won five of his career seven titles between 2000-2004 and served as chairman of both Ferrari and parent FIAT. McLaren and Ferrari, the two oldest and most successful teams in Formula One history, have been rivals for decades and were involved in a notorious 'Spygate' scandal that erupted in 2007. British-based McLaren were stripped of all their championship points and fined a record $100 million over a dossier of stolen Ferrari technical documents found in the possession of McLaren's chief designer. Both Ferrari and McLaren are under different management now, with Montezemolo resigning his roles at the Italian luxury sportscar maker in 2014 and focusing on other business interests. CYVN, majority-owned by the government of Abu Dhabi, created McLaren Group Holdings in April after completing its acquisition of McLaren Automotive. The group includes a non-controlling stake in McLaren Racing, the Formula One team whose majority shareholder is Bahrain's Mumtalakat and which operates completely independently. Paul Walsh, executive chairman of McLaren Racing, is also one of the nine directors of McLaren Group Holdings, while McLaren team principal Andrea Stella previously worked for Ferrari. McLaren are the reigning Formula One constructors' world champions while Ferrari last won a title in 2008. Seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton, who took his first title for McLaren in 2008, is now driving for Ferrari. News of Montezemolo's new role was greeted with some amazement in Italy. "Montezemolo-McLaren: What a slap in the face to Ferrari," said sports newspaper Tuttosport in a headline.

Arsenal playing the long game in the summer transfer market

While Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta once led recruitment decisions, new sporting director Andrea Berta's expertise will not be ignored. PHOTO: Action Images via Reuters When Arsenal fell short last season, the widespread assumption was that personnel issues had cost Mikel Arteta's team. If only the Gunners had been able to call on a finisher with the level of Mohamed Salah or Erling Haaland, then second place in the Premier League and a run to the Champions League semi-finals would have been exchanged for silverware. The transfer market is a jumble of such equations, and as summer business resumes, the expectation is that Arteta will soon have his man. Which man? That appears the first issue in a situation that is trying Arsenal fans' patience when their peers are signing big. Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Alex Warren and Blackpink's Rose team up for a love song

American content creator-musician Alex Warren and Blackpink's Rose have released their surprise collaboration, On My Mind. The Ordinary hitmaker, as did Rose, had been teasing fans about teaming up in their social media accounts and the pair have now delivered a swoon-worthy love ballad. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ROSÉ (@roses_are_rosie) The track is a new addition to Warren's album You'll Be Alright, Kid. Set for release on July 18, 2025, the collection features all of the tracks from the 24-year-old star's debut LP You'll Be Alright, Kid (Chapter 1), alongside newbies such as smash hit Ordinary and Bloodline with Jelly Roll. You'll Be Alright, Kid (Chapter 1) focused on 'dealing with grief', while You'll Be Alright, Kid 'turns the page with healing, resilience and optimism'. February's Ordinary spent 11 consecutive weeks at number one on the UK chart, marking the longest-running number one in the UK by a US male solo act in more than 70 years, and the joint longest-running number one of the 2020s, tied with Ed Sheeran's Bad Habits. On the viral success of the TikTok hit, Warren told Variety: 'I am so forever grateful for all the support and will never stop saying thank you. 'I wouldn't have any of this if it weren't for my fans, so I am so appreciative.' Recounting how quickly Ordinary came to fruition, he shared: 'We wrote Ordinary in December last year, started teasing it in January, and released it in February. 'In the music industry, that's a crazy fast turnaround, but we did that because we knew immediately how good it was. I've never had a song so quickly 'click' and I just had to put it out as soon as possible.'
