Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet smash world records at an extraordinary Diamond League meeting
Kipyegon, who fell short in her quest to become the first woman in history to run a four-minute mile last month, bounced back in impressive style to break her own women's 1,500m world record with a time of 3:48.68.
She dominated the race, holding off Australia's Jessica Hull who stuck with her until the back straight, eventually winning by almost three seconds.
As Kipyegon crossed the line, the crowd erupted, knowing she had shaved 0.36 seconds off the world record, while she turned and pointed back towards the clock before wrapping herself in a Kenyan flag.
Earlier in the meet, also known as the Prefontaine Classic, Chebet obliterated the 5,000m world record by more than two seconds, becoming the first woman to complete the distance in under 14 minutes.
She crossed the line in 13:58.06, more than three seconds ahead of Agnes Jebet Ngetich in second place, who recorded the third-fastest time in history.
Gudaf Tsegay, the previous world record holder, finished the race in third place with a time of 14:04.41.
Chebet had already broken the 14-minute barrier on the road in January when she completed the race in 13:54.
'I'm so happy,' Chebet said afterward. 'In Rome (where she recorded a time of 14:03.69), I was just running to win a race. After Rome, I say that I am capable of running a world record so let me go back home and prepare … I told myself, 'if Faith is trying for a world record in Eugene, why not me too?''
'It's a good track for me,' she added, referencing her previous success in Eugene where she broke the women's 10,000m world record last year.
Now, Chebet holds the 5,000m and 10,000m women's world records as well as the Olympic titles in both events.
Elsewhere at the meet, Mondo Duplantis comfortably won the men's pole vault but failed to raise his own world record, hitting the bar on all three of his attempts to clear 6.29m.

(AP Photo/Phil Long) CLEVELAND (AP) — Stephen Vogt has tried to look at the bright side despite everything that has gone wrong for his Cleveland Guardians over the past two weeks. 'We're all wearing it. It's frustrating, but the only way to get through frustrating situations is to stay positive and keep working,' the manager said before Sunday's game against Detroit. Advertisement Vogt's power of positivity is going to be tested over the next week. Sunday's 7-2 loss to the Tigers in 10 innings extended the Guardians' losing streak to 10 games, the first time since 2012 they've had a double-digit skid. It is the 11th time in franchise history they have lost 10 straight in a single season. The team record is 12, set in 1931. 'This game felt like a kick in the pants. It really did. Gut-wrenching. Heart-wrenching,' Vogt said. Cleveland is an AL-worst 9-22 since June 1, including a 4-12 mark at home. The Guardians have dropped eight of their last 10 three-game series and have been swept four times. Advertisement At 40-48, the Guardians are assured of going into the All-Star break under .500 for the first time since 2015. Cleveland is 6 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot after it won the AL Central and reached the AL Championship Series last season. Repeating as division champions is out of reach with a 15 1/2-game deficit to the Tigers after being swept over the weekend. To say the Guardians are struggling at the plate would be kind. They are batting .166 during the skid, their worst 10-game stretch since posting a .163 average in 2020. Clutch hitting has been even worse. The Guardians are 5 of 52 during the losing streak with runners in scoring position, including 2 for 31 with two out. Advertisement 'I feel like we're getting our runners on just waiting for that one big hit. The pitchers are doing what they have to do. We had some good defense last couple days,' said Steven Kwan, who earned his second straight AL All-Star selection on Sunday. Cleveland went 9-15 in June and had a .206 batting average, which is tied for the third-worst batting month in franchise history with at least 13 games played. The Guardians are winless in six July games, including two shutouts. 'We haven't been great at situational hitting. We have to continue to work on that. It's frustrating,' Vogt said. Kwan and third baseman José Ramírez are the only everyday players batting above .240. Even Ramírez, the AL's starting All-Star third baseman, has cooled off, going 3 for 31 in the last 10 games. His batting average during the skid has dropped 21 points to .297. Advertisement Pitching for the most part has been solid, but has faltered at key times. On Sunday, closer Emmanuel Clase threw a wild pitch on a 99.9 mph cutter on a 1-2 count with two outs in the ninth inning, allowing pinch-runner Zach McKinstry to score the tying run. Trey Sweeney's three-run homer in the 10th inning marked the first time that someone had gone deep on Cade Smith in 81 appearances and 78 2/3 innings. 'We're all wearing it. After facing Detroit ace Tarik Skubal on Sunday, the Guardians face Houston's Hunter Brown on Monday. Brown leads the AL with a 1.82 ERA and his 126 strikeouts are seventh. Luis Ortiz is the subject of a Major League Baseball gambling investigation involving prop bets on pitches he made and was placed on leave on July 3. Vogt has tried to remain calm while while stressing that a lot of the season remains to be played. But with the trade deadline less than a month away, time may be running out. 'It doesn't do any good to loathe or talk about negatives and moan and complain,' Vogt said. "That's not productive. We've got to keep working to get better. We're all in this together. The Portland Trail Blazers made a big and surprising move before free agency begins, as they came to an agreement on a buyout with one of their centers, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. It will be interesting to see what Ayton's market will be as free agency is on the way. There were many questions on how the Blazers would handle their center rotation, especially after drafting Hansen Yang with the No. 16 pick in the NBA Draft. Not many people expected Yang to go that quickly in the draft, but the Blazers believed in his talent. In his two seasons with the Chinese Basketball Association, Yang averaged 15.8 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks while shooting 56.9 percent from the field. Advertisement The Blazers had four centers on the roster, which included Ayton, Donovan Clingan, and Robert Williams III. There was a good chance someone would be on the outside looking in, and it was Ayton whom the Blazers decided to let go. Ayton's game has been under a microscope over the past few seasons, and it started during his final season with the Phoenix Suns. Since coming to the Trail Blazers, Ayton hadn't been available to play much, which gave other players on the team a chance to get minutes. In Clingan's rookie season last year, he took advantage of the opportunity, and he averaged 6.5 points and 7.9 rebounds in 67 games. Ayton will most likely have a list of suitors going after him, and he may be signed sooner rather than later.
