Defender 'on Rangers radar' and available for bargain price

Mbuyamba has been linked to both Celtic and Rangers in the past and the Ibrox club are still said to be monitoring the situation.
But that is the case for Belgian club Gent and sides in England too, who are alert to the chance to snap him up on a bargain deal.
He was also recently being tracked by clubs in Turkey, Italy and Poland.
He said: "Volendam defender Xavier Mbuyamba, on the radar of Rangers and Gent.
"Volendam have opened the door to a sale of former Chelsea defender with €500k price tag after he refused to extend his current contract. English clubs keen as well."

Rangers ‘miss out on key transfer target as star completes medical and finalises deal at other club'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS have already signed seven new players this summer, with Russell Martin wasting no time in the transfer market ahead of the blockbuster Champions League clashes with Panathinaikos. But many other players have been linked with the Ibrox club since the window opened and manager Martin arrived in Glasgow last month. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 1 It could be a big blow for Russell Martin Credit: PA And it looks like Rangers have lost out in the race to sign one of their targets as a report suggests he's finalising a move elsewhere in Europe. The Light Blues were keen on signing Brazilian midfielder Metinho from French side Troyes in a deal worth around £4million. The 22-year-old Samba star - who has been likened to Paul Pogba - was one of the many midfielders on the radar of the Govan club. But he'll no longer be on the Gers' shortlist as he has returned to Switzerland instead, according to a report. Metinho is contracted with Troyes but spent the second half of last season on loan at Basel in the Swiss Super League alongside the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and former Celtic striker Albian Ajeti. He made 14 appearances in all competitions and impressed new manager Ludovic Magnin with his displays. According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Metinho has now chosen to continue his career with the historic Swiss club on a permanent deal. Last night he revealed the midfielder had jetted into Switzerland to complete and medical and finalise terms. It's a blow for Gers boss Martin who could still be looking to add to his midfield ranks despite already snapping up Thelo Aasgaard and Joe Rothwell, with Lyall Cameron also joining. He may have to begin his hunt for a replacement for Nico Raskin as reports from Spain suggest he's a target for Real Betis. Rangers boss Russell Martin opens up on transfer plans as he delivers updates on Dessers and Igamane The Belgian has two years left on his current deal but the Ibrox club are preparing a bumper new contract offer to convince him to stay beyond this summer. SunSport understands that Gers boss Martin wants to build his team around the 24-year-old. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Lee Westwood repping Open old guard on course he loves but admits better half would rather be somewhere else

Former No.1 takes Dundonald form to Dunluce Links on day one as Westy relishes being back at Royal Portrush ‌ Evergreen Lee Westwood rolled back the years on a stunning return to The Open. ‌ The former World No.1 savoured an excellent opening-day 69 at Royal Portrush. ‌ However, Westwood reckons his missus Helen would rather be back home riding around on a horse. The 52-year-old soared from Dundonald to the Dunluce as he took his outstanding qualifying performance across the Irish Sea. Westwood decided against attempting to fight his way through in the previous two years, but a change of approach paid off handsomely in Ayrshire. The English star kept it going on the opening day and reiterated his belief that The Open continues to offer opportunity to the older guard. Westwood said: 'Links golf more than any golf gives you a chance when you're our age, shall I say? Yeah, youngsters. It's a while since I've been called that. ‌ 'I love The Open Championship and I love Portrush. I've been coming here a long time. It's one of the golf courses where, if it wasn't The Open and somebody said do you want to play Portrush this weekend, I'd probably go. There's not many like that. 'I feel in control of my swing. It's as good as it's been for a while. You can't beat seeing your name up there on a Thursday. We'll talk again if it's up there on Sunday! ‌ 'It's nice to see it on the big yellow scoreboards and it's nice to walk down the 18th here. I've always said that for a British player, it's the greatest walk in golf, especially if you're in with a chance on Sunday. 'I've always appreciated playing in it and being in it. It's the greatest championship in golf for me. I'm slightly biased because I'm British. I guess Americans might say the Masters or the US Open. For me, The Open Championship just has everything.' Westwood's good lady Helen played her part doing the caddie work and he added: 'She wanted to do it. She loves the weather over here, the fact that she needs two pairs of hands and sometimes three. ‌ 'She caddied for me in the qualifying and I prefer to have her caddieing for me whenever she can. We have a good record round here from finishing fourth six years ago. 'It was an easy decision for me to make. Probably harder for her. She'd probably rather be at home riding a horse!'
