Grants for private temples, mutts increased from Rs 1 crore to Rs 5 crore
The order, dated May 28 and gazetted on June 30, is being seen as a move to streamline funding, end backdoor lobbying, and improve transparency in religious infrastructure grants.
Muzrai department officials say the previous cap was low, and institutions used to lobby a lot to secure grants under different heads, including those meant for govt-controlled temples.
"This led to a lot of audit questions, and we were pulled up by CAG and AG offices for lack of transparency," a senior muzrai department official said.
"So, the govt decided to increase allocations."

The govt justified the move by saying grant-in-aid limits had not been revised in the past 14 years. It said the cap was revised to address long-pending requests from religious institutions to support "repair, renovation and infrastructure development",
The order outlines 13 specific heads under which private temples can use these funds. These include repair of the sanctum sanctorum, main entrance gates, pillars, compound walls, flagpoles, and devotees' waiting areas.

Grants can also be used to construct wedding halls and 'dasoha bhavans' (community dining halls), making this the first time such inclusions have been formally allowed under govt aid.
Similarly, mutts across the state will now be eligible for up to Rs 5 crore funds. These grants are for four specific categories: Repair and renovation of mutts and affiliated temples, infrastructure upgrades like toilet blocks and drinking water facilities, shade and parking for devotees, and dining halls.
The govt has imposed strict compliance rules — demanding utilisation certificates (UCs), photographic documentation of progress, and regular audits to ensure accountability.
To prevent misuse, the govt has introduced a staged release mechanism. "Private institutions, temples, or mutts will be sanctioned up to Rs 25 lakh first, and funds thereafter will be provided only after UCs are provided," the order states.
Allocation for muzrai department-controlled temples has also been enhanced. These temples can now receive up to Rs 2.5 crore directly from the department. Anything more than that will need govt approval. The order also provides the muzrai department with expanded autonomy to acquire land and create accommodation and infrastructure even outside Karnataka for the benefit of the state's devotees.
Muzrai minister R Ramalinga Reddy, said: "What we provide is only for our own temples. The remaining funds for private temples and mutts are generally sponsored by the CM from his discretionary fund." He also said the entire grant-in-aid process is overseen by the Chief Minister's Office and will be under their purview.

Tier 2 cities outpace metros in residential plot launches: PropEquity
Tier 2 cities such as Indore, Nagpur and Surat have outpaced big cities as realtors launched nearly 470,000 residential plots, with an estimated launch value of approximately Rs 2.44 trillion, across the top 10 tier 1 and tier 2 cities between 2022 and May 2025, according to a report by real estate analytics firm PropEquity. The report stated that seven of the top 10 cities were tier 2, supplying around 243,000 residential plots and accounting for 52 per cent of the total supply. These cities include Indore, Nagpur, Jaipur, Coimbatore, Mysore, Raipur and Surat. On the other hand, only three tier 1 cities — Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai — made it to the top 10, supplying nearly 225,000 residential plots or 48 per cent of the supply share. 'Residential plots have emerged as a safe haven for investors looking at them for self-use or investment post-pandemic owing to their liquidity, faster appreciation and desire to customise their living space,' he added. For developers, Jasuja said plots generate quicker cash flow as they involve faster sales and lower upfront investment compared to apartments. The report further highlighted that in the first five months of 2025, developers launched 45,591 residential plots — 36 per cent of the supply seen in 2024 and 28 per cent of the supply in 2023. In 2024, the supply of residential plots in the top 10 tier 1 and tier 2 cities fell 23 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to 126,556 plots from 163,529 plots in 2023. The weighted average launch price of residential plots in these cities rose 27 per cent YoY in 2024 to Rs 3,679 per square foot.

Theobroma patisserie chain, built by Mumbai-based sisters, eyes Rs 2,410 crore deal with ChrysCapital
Pan-India patisserie chain Theobroma, founded by Mumbai-based sisters Kainaz Messman Harchandrai and Tina Messman Wykes, is likely to be acquired by private equity firm ChrysCapital for Rs 2,410 crore. According to The Economic Times, the homegrown private equity firm will reportedly purchase nearly 90 per cent of the company from its founding promoters, the Wykes family, and existing investor ICICI Venture. The remaining 10 per cent stake is expected to remain with the current shareholders. Born in a small kitchen in Colaba at a neighbour's request, Theobroma — Greek for 'Food of the Gods' — was founded in 2004 by the two sisters. It began as a modest café with just four tables in Mumbai's Colaba and has since grown into a leading patisserie chain with presence in over 30 cities across India. What makes Theobroma's journey exciting is the fact that it is a story of a family coming together and turning their dreams into reality. Kainaz, often described as the soul of Theobroma, began baking as a child, helping her mother, who ran a home-bakery called Not Just Desserts. A trip to France at 16 proved to be a turning point, inspiring her to pursue the culinary arts. She later graduated from Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) Mumbai and the Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development (OCLD) in Delhi, and went on to work as a pastry chef at the Oberoi Udaivilas. In 2004, she launched Theobroma as a cosy neighbourhood coffee shop in Colaba. The second outlet opened in Bandra in 2010 — and the rest, as they say, is history. Today, Theobroma is a household name, with its signature brownies becoming a mainstay across India.
