"I think we are going to reach a deal with India, we are looking to get a full trade barrier dropping...": Donald Trump

India Gazette13 hours ago

Washington DC [US], June 27 (ANI): US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about a trade deal with India and said his country is looking for 'full trade barrier dropping which is unthinkable' and that he is not sure that that is going to happen.
'India, I think we are going to reach a deal where we have the right to go and do trade. Right now, it's restricted. You can't walk in there, you can't even think about it. We are looking to get a full trade barrier dropping, which is unthinkable and I am not sure that that is going to happen. But as of this moment, we agree that going to India and trade...' 'We have made a deal with China...We have 200 countries plus,' Trump told reporters here.
'At a certain point over the next week and a half or so, or maybe before we are going to send out a letter and talk to many other countries. We are going to tell them what they have to pay to do business with the US,' he added.
He was responding to a query on US reciprocal tariff deadline.
Trump said on Thursday (US local time) that America has signed a deal with China and hinted that a 'very big' deal with India will follow soon.
Trump made the remarks while speaking at the Big Beautiful Bill event.
In his speech hinting towards trade deals, Trump said, 'Everybody wants to make a deal and have a part of it. Remember a few months ago, the press was saying, 'You really have anybody of any interest? Well, we just signed with China yesterday. We are having some great deals. We have one coming up, maybe with India. Very big one. Where we're going to open up India, in the China deal, we are starting to open up China.'
Trump asserted that deals will not be made with every other nation.
'We're not going to make deals with everybody. Some we are just going to send them a letter, say thank you very much. You are to pay 25, 35, 45 per cent. That's the easy way to do it, and my people don't want to do it that way. They want to do some of it, but they want to make more deals than I would do,' he said.
'But we're having some great deals. We have one coming up, maybe with India. Very big one. Where we're going to open up India, in the China deal, we're starting to open up China. Things that never really could have happened, and the relationship with every country has been very good' he added.
However, Trump did not elaborate on the details of the deal signed with China.
Earlier in June, CNN reported that the United States and China reached a new trade agreement, reviving terms first agreed to in Geneva last month, after escalating tensions led to a virtual halt in bilateral trade.
Earlier this month, while speaking at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said that a trade deal between India and the United States could be finalised soon, with both countries finding common ground that suits their interests.
'I think to be in a very, very good place, and you should expect a deal between the United States and India in the not-too-distant future because I think we found a place that really works for both countries.'
When asked if he was hopeful about the outcome, Lutnick said he was 'very optimistic,' and added, 'It could be sort of the way I come across,' he said.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on June 10 that India and the US were in the process of negotiating a fair and equitable trade agreement that will benefit both economies.
Addressing a press conference over India-US trade deal and Future trade agreement with the European Union, Piyush Goyal said, 'PM Narendra Modi and US President Trump met in February 2025...Both our leaders have decided to enter into a bilateral trade agreement which will be mutually beneficial for both the economies, businesses on both sides and the people of both countries. We are negotiating to make a nice, fair, equitable and balanced agreement to promote business.'
Highlighting that both America and India are 'very close friends, allies and strategic partners', Piyush Goyal said that the trade deal is an opportunity to expand bilateral trade and strengthen the partnership between the two nations.
About two weeks remain before the critical July 9 deadline as India and the United States negotiate challenges in finalising their Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) as the 90-day tariff pause period draws to a close.
Government sources earlier emphasised that India's national interests will remain paramount in ongoing negotiations, even as both nations work intensively to reach an interim deal before the deadline expires.
The negotiations had hit roadblocks, with the US maintaining its demands for substantially reduced duties on American agricultural and dairy products, along with market access for genetically modified (GMO) crops.
Indian is apparently not keen on these proposals, citing concerns over food security, environmental protection, and the welfare of its domestic farming sector. (ANI)

North Korea opens grand seaside resort inaugurated by Kim Jong Un; but, not everyone is welcome

North Korea has opened a grand seaside resort called Wonsan-Kalma. State media described it as a 'national treasure-level tourism city'. Kim Jong Un inaugurated it himself. The resort includes waterparks and high-rise hotels. It can host nearly 20,000 guests, CNN reported. It is located on North Korea's eastern coast and is connected by a newly-opened train station and international airport. The location hints at North Korea's plans to attract foreign visitors, especially Russians. Only Russian officials attended the opening, showing North Korea's stronger ties with Moscow and growing isolation from the West. While the country faces severe hunger and hardship, this lavish project is being promoted as proof of Kim's care for his people, according to CNN. Kim Jong Un has said North Korea will expand tourism zones soon and build big tourist and cultural sites across the country. Kim visited the Wonsan-Kalma resort at least seven times. The Supremo guided the work himself and aiming for top global standards. In December 2024, after nearly five years of COVID-related border closure, North Korea reopened the northern city of Samjiyon for tourists. Tour companies in China confirmed the news. The 2020 shutdown led to major food shortages due to halted imports and global sanctions. Travel firms expect other cities like Pyongyang to reopen soon as restrictions ease. Still, foreign tourist visits to North Korea remain strictly controlled. Past Russian tourists had to follow many rules, including limited photography and attending organised performances. Experts believe the resort may soon welcome Russian visitors. It will support Kim's image of focusing on tourism while continuing his defence policies, according to CNN. The new Wonsan-Kalma resort is expected to serve elite officials from Pyongyang, not the general public. Experts say the project shows Kim Jong Un's aim to boost the economy through tourism. In the 1990s, North Korea opened Mount Kumgang for South Korean visitors, seen as a rare step toward peace. Around two million tourists visited, bringing in money. But, the tours stopped after a South Korean visitor had been shot in 2008 for entering a restricted area. In 2022, many buildings in the region were demolished after Kim had called them outdated. 'The initial target for this resort is going to be the privileged domestic elite of Pyongyang, such as party officials and other high-ranking figures,' CNN quoted professor Lim Eul-chul as saying. 'The ceremony of the Wonsan-Kalma resort reflects Kim Jong Un's vision of 'socialist civilisation' and is part of his strategic effort to seek economic breakthroughs through the tourism industry,' Lim added.

Integrated seafood, tourism hub to be developed on Malaysia's West coast

Kuala Lumpur: An integrated hub project for seafood production, maritime services, and sustainable tourism has been launched to uplift the region's fisheries sector and support sustainable coastal community development, Malaysia's Selangor state Chief Minister Amirudin Shari said on Saturday. The Sekinchan Integrated Landing Port will especially uplift the coastal district of Sabak Bernam, transforming it from a support district into a driver of growth, Amirudin said at the launch of the initiative. "It is about unlocking long-term value through infrastructure that empowers people, sustains livelihoods, and positions Selangor as a state that leaves no region behind. We are building a foundation that will benefit not just today's generation, but those to come," he said. An initial investment of 500 million ringgit (118.2 million US dollars) has been identified for fishing-related infrastructure and improvements for the entire Sekinchan Integrated Landing Port initiative, which is set to kick off by the end of 2026, reports Xinhua news agency. Phase 1 of the hub will be developed over five years, with 80 per cent of it being built over water. It will include a centralised jetty and fisheries complex, a fish auction hall, a logistics center as well as coastal enhancements including a new public beach, retail amenities, and serviced accommodation, MBI Selangor, a body established by the state government to manage the state's assets and investments, said in a statement. The project is expected to generate direct employment opportunities through newly created economic activities, enhance the district's attractiveness as a tourism destination, and open new channels for local entrepreneurs to promote and commercialise community-based products. In a separate development, on June 19, official data showed that Malaysia's domestic tourism expenditure for the first quarter of 2025 was recorded at 29.4 billion ringgit (6.9 billion US dollars), an increase of 22.1 per cent year-on-year. The Department of Statistics Malaysia said in a statement that the number of domestic visitors in Malaysia also experienced a significant surge to record 69.7 million visitors for the first quarter of 2025, rising 18.9 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, domestic visitors went up 4.3 per cent as compared to the fourth quarter of 2024. (1 ringgit equals 0.23 US dollars)

Defence Secretary Unpacks India's Tactical Brilliance In Op Sindoor At CNN-News18 Townhall

Last Updated: The Defence Secretary revealed how India planned the Operation Sindoor's targets in Pakistan, in response to barbaric Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh on Saturday revealed during CNN-News18 Defence Townhall how planning went into Operation Sindoor and how the targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir were chosen and with what message. He said that after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, India wanted to convey the message, which could only be conveyed if terror headquarters were struck deep inside Pakistan. Therefore, LeT and Jaish headquarters in Muridke and Bahawalpur were chosen, he said. 'After Pahalgam, there was meticulous planning of what target we should hit. The intent this time was to go beyond the foot soldiers and hit the headquarters, particularly LET and Jaish at Muridke and Bahawalpur. These outfits' relationship with terror in India goes back to 26/11. The idea was to send a clear message, and the message would only go if we hit the headquarters and not just some of the camps. The planning, therefore, was focused on that. The intent was to hit only the terrorist outfits," he said while speaking at CNN-News18 Defence Townhall. 'This was to convey to the Pakistanis that this was a non-escalatory, calibrated operation against terrorists. That was conveyed to them the next day, they did not respond to our calls and decided to escalate," he added. More to follow…
