Divided by conflict, 2 Manipur families now bound by grief—a Kuki & a Meitei were among AI 171 crew
New Delhi: Among the 10 cabin crew members on board Air India Flight 171 flying from Ahmedabad to London Thursday were two young women from conflict-ridden Manipur—a Kuki and a Meitei. Far from the ongoing conflict that divided their home state, both were working together as flight crew.
The Kuki woman, Lamnunthen Singson, originally from Imphal, was displaced in the conflict and forced to move with her family to Kangpokpi in the hills. The Meitei woman, Nganthoi Sharma Kongbrailatpam, is from Thoubal town, Manipur.
Speaking to ThePrint, Nnemg, the sister of Singson, said the family had been watching the horrific visuals of the crash but still did not want to believe that Singson was no more.
'I spoke to her this morning before she was to board the flight. She said she was going to London. I can't believe this. I can not say anything more. We are still waiting for official information from Ahmedabad,' Nnemg told ThePrint. 'She joined Air India three years ago.'
Speaking to ThePrint over a call, Gitanjali, the elder sister of Air India crew member Nganthoi, said the family was still 'in the dark', more so because there is no internet in the valley after the violence Saturday over the arrest of Kanan Singh, a senior member of the Meitei body Arambai Tenggol, and the detention of four of his associates.
'We are in the dark. There is no Internet here, so we don't know much. We are only getting calls from our cousin, a brother who lives in Delhi. He said we have to give blood samples for the identification [of Nganthoi]. We might leave tomorrow,' Gitanjali said.
'We know for sure she was on the flight, but no confirmation from Air India yet on her condition. My parents remain very worried. The situation is grim,' she added.
Nganthoi, 21, joined Air India as a crew member in 2023. It was her first job after completing Class 12 and training. She has two siblings and parents.
A total of 242 people, including two pilots and 10 crew members, were on board the Air India flight that crashed in Ahmedabad on Thursday noon. The flight was bound for Gatwick Airport in London.
According to a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) statement, 'On 12 Jun, M/s Air India B787 Aircraft VT-ANB, while operating flight AI-171 (from Ahmedabad to Gatwick), crashed immediately after takeoff from Ahmedabad. There were 242 people on board the aircraft, consisting of 2 pilots and 10 cabin crew. The aircraft was under the command of Capt. Sumeet Sabharwal with First Officer Clive Kundar. Capt. Sumeet Sabharwal is an LTC with 8200 hours of experience. The co-pilot had 1100 hours of flying experience.'
The aircraft had taken off at 1.38 pm from runway 23. Right after takeoff, it placed a mayday call to Air Traffic Control (ATC), but thereafter, the aircraft gave no response, the DGCA said. Most people on board the aircraft are feared dead.

Second arrest in Jiribam killings, Manipur HC pushes for chargesheet
Guwahati: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made a second arrest in the brutal November 2024 Jiribam killings, detaining Lalrosang Hmar alias Rosang from Aizawl, Mizoram, on Thursday. This follows the recent arrest of another accused, Thanglienlal Hmar, also from Aizawl. The case pertains to the abduction and murder of three Meitei women and three children - including a 10-month-old infant - by militants in Manipur's Borobekra area on November 11 last year. Their bullet-ridden bodies were later recovered from the Barak River along the Manipur-Assam border. NIA arrests second suspect in 2024 Jiribam killings of six Meiteis in Manipur
Imphal: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a second person in connection with the Jiribam killings, in which six Meitei individuals—three women and three children—were killed, allegedly by Kuki-Hmar militants on November 11, 2024. The National Investigation Agency has seized a mobile phone, along with a SIM card, from Lalrosang and is examining it (Representative photo) 'Lalrosang Hmar alias Rosang, a resident of Assam's Moinathol village, was arrested from Mizoram's Aizawl on Thursday,' the investigation agency said on X. Earlier, Thanglienlal Hmar alias Boya, a resident of Moinathol village in the district, was arrested on specific intelligence inputs, Cachar senior superintendent of police Numal Mahatta said. 'Like Thanglienlal, Lalrosang was also an active conspirator in the heinous crime. NIA has seized a mobile phone, along with a SIM card, from Lalrosang and is examining it,' the NIA's post added. The Manipur High Court in July had pulled up the NIA for the prolonged delay in filing a progress report. The case has drawn widespread attention in the state, with many civil society groups demanding accountability and swift justice in the wake of the brutal killings. After months of silence on violence in the strife-torn state, following the outbreak of unrest on May 3, 2023, the Jiribam incident reignited tension in the state. Since May 3, 2023, over 250 individuals have been killed and more than 60,000 displaced. However, the imposition of President's Rule in Manipur on February 13 this year has led to renewed efforts at rehabilitation, with the government announcing a December 2025 target for the resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)..

IndiGo bars man who hit a co-passenger on plane flying from Mumbai to Kolkata from its flights
NEW DELHI: IndiGo has barred a passenger who had assaulted a co-flyer on an aircraft headed from Mumbai to Kolkata Friday, from all its flights indefinitely. "Following due diligence, the incident involving an unruly customer has been formally reported to the relevant authorities for necessary action. In line with our commitment to discourage such unruly behaviour onboard flights, the individual has been suspended from flying on any IndiGo flights, in accordance with regulatory provisions," IndiGo said Saturday. Now it is upto other Indian airlines whether they also decide on doing the same with the accused till the due legal process of putting him on the national no fly list is taken. Before this provision for unruly flyers was in place, state-owned Air India, under its then CMD Ashwani Lohani had about a decade back had barred at least two people, including an MP, from its flights. At that time, other airlines had also decided to do the same for these people. The no fly list in India was enacted after these instances. IndiGo had initiated legal action against the unruly flyer on Saturday itself after the aircraft landed in Kolkata. So apart from being put on no fly list, there is likely to be other action too against the assaulter. The Bidhannagar Police said on X: "On Aug 1, 2025, a complaint was received from IndiGo regarding two Indian male passengers who were travelling on flight 6E-138 from Mumbai to Kolkata. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like (1) Activate Antivirus License Now Click Here During the flight, a heated altercation ensued between the two, following which Hafijul Rahaman slapped the other, Hossain Ahmed Majumder). Passenger declared unruly by the cabin crew of Indigo and handed over to Police. Legal action has been initiated. " The unruly passenger hit a co-traveller who had a panic attack on an IndiGo Mumbai-Kolkata flight Friday. The assaulter was handed over to security agencies by the airline. The victim had suffered a panic attack when the aircraft was taxiing in Mumbai. He started sobbing and walking in the aisle, requesting to be allowed to alight from the plane. At this time a passenger is seen slapping this person as he was passing by his seat in videos of the assault that went viral on social media. All other passengers and airline crew immediately came to the victim's support. 'He was comforted and seated. The aircraft then took off for its destination and had an uneventful flight,' said people in the know. "At IndiGo, the safety and well-being of our customers and crew remain our foremost priority. We remain committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and comfortable environment for all onboard," IndiGo said on X Saturday while announcing its decision to put the assaulter on its no fly list.
