(Reuters) -Spain's twice Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati is keen to start against Belgium on Monday at the Women's Euros, but manager Montse Tome is leaning on the side of caution a week after the midfielder was released from hospital after viral meningitis.
The 27-year-old played the final nine minutes in the world champions' 5-0 thrashing of Portugal on Thursday, and was itching to play a bigger role.
"I'm ready for 90 minutes and more," the Barcelona player said in an interview with RTVE. "You know my mentality and my ambition; if I'm healthy, I'm never going to complain."
Bonmati was frustrated at spending most of the Portugal game on the bench, Tome said, stressing that her health was the main consideration.
"She has a very high mental capacity. She's super focused in the tournament," Tome told reporters on Sunday. "It's a pity she was sick at the beginning. We were afraid at the beginning, when we knew what she had, but she recovered very quickly.
"The other day, talking to the medical services, she played what she could play, because priority was her health.
"That's the line we will follow. Aitana is available (on Monday), and we will decide what the game, the team needs and what's most suitable with all the information we have.
"But the positive thing is that she's fine, and she recovered."
Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll will also be available against Belgium, Tome said, after being ill with what Spanish media reported was tonsillitis.
"We'll decide if she'll be playing or not. I think the Belgium coach (Elisabet Gunnarsdottir) is wondering if she's playing or not, but we're not giving any additional information," Tome said.
"But the positive thing is that she is improving, and that what she has is not serious."
Spain, who have never won the Women's Euros but are favourites in Switzerland, top Group B, while Belgium are third having lost their opener 1-0 to Italy.

Soccer-Wales team unharmed but cancel Euro 2025 training after bus crash

Soccer Football - UEFA Women's Euro 2025 - Group D - Wales v Netherlands - Stadion Allmend, Lucerne, Switzerland - July 5, 2025 Wales' Hayley Ladd, Rachel Rowe and Kayleigh Barton look dejected after the match REUTERS/Matthew Childs (Reuters) -Wales coach Rhian Wilkinson said her players were shaken but otherwise fine after their bus crashed on the way to Stadion St Gallen for training on Tuesday ahead of their Women's Euro 2025 match against France. Wilkinson, who was in a separate vehicle along with skipper Angharad James, said that the well-being of her players was the priority ahead of Wednesday's game. "Yeah, football is secondary and I think, yes we are shaken because we are away from the team right now knowing that they've had to experience that," Wilkinson told a press conference. "But equally we have a great group and I have been assured that everyone is fine. We have practiced for the unexpected, that's what we can call this. "We will check in with everyone and make sure they are all in a good spot and we can focus on the football again after that. Our priority is to get them all together and away from the scene. We'll be checking in to make sure they all continue to be OK." Wilkinson said the crash happened near the team hotel. "All passengers on the Cymru National Team bus and in the other vehicle are unharmed," The Football Association of Wales said in a statement. "The FAW's priority has been to remove the players from the scene and return to the Cymru training base to complete their preparations for tomorrow's match." Wales, who are making their major tournament debut, lost 3-0 to the Netherlands on Saturday and are facing elimination when they play France on Wednesday. Wales face England in the final group game. Speeding likely cause of Diogo Jota car crash

MADRID: Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota was likely speeding when his car veered off a motorway in Spain last week killing him and his brother, Spanish police said on Tuesday. The shock deaths of Jota, 28, and Andre Silva, 25, on July 3 plunged the football world into mourning, less than two weeks after the striker had got married. An ongoing investigation is examining "the marks left by one of the vehicle's wheels... everything points to a possible excessive speed beyond the road's speed limit", the Civil Guard said. "All the tests conducted so far indicate that the driver of the vehicle was Diogo Jota," it added. The force had previously said a tyre had probably blown out while the vehicle was overtaking, causing it to crash and burst into flames in the northwestern province of Zamora. Just hours before the accident, Jota had posted a video of his June 22 wedding to partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children. The deaths sparked an outpouring of grief, particularly in the brothers' native Portugal and at Jota's Premier League club Liverpool. Political leaders as well as star players from Portugal and Liverpool joined family and friends at the funeral on Saturday in the Porto suburb of Gondomar. Following spells at Atletico Madrid, Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers, Jota became a fan favourite at Liverpool after joining the Premier League giants in 2020. He netted 65 times for the Reds in five seasons, lifting the League Cup and FA Cup in 2021/22 and helping them win a record-equalling 20th English league title last season. The striker also earned 49 caps for Portugal and was part of the team that won this year's UEFA Nations League. Young forward Agyemang hoping to help England take off at Euro 2025

ENGLAND'S Michelle Agyemang made a big impression in less than 10 minutes at Euro 2025, and she hopes she can make the most of anytime on the pitch when the Lionesses face the Netherlands in a must-win Group D game on Wednesday. Agyemang was an 86th-minute substitute in their 2-1 loss to France in their opener on Saturday, but had more touches in the French box (five) than any other England player, had a shot on goal that was blocked, and generally caused chaos for the opposition defenders. The 19-year-old made a great case for more minutes against the Netherlands with England in danger of becoming the first holders in tournament history to be eliminated in the group stage. 'I think it's easy to look at the time and think, 'Ugh, there's not enough time left,'' Agyemang told reporters on Monday. 'But obviously, that's the beauty of the game. Sometimes it only takes 10 seconds to make an impact. So I think anytime on the pitch is good enough for me.' Agyemang had a stunning debut in the England senior team back in April against Belgium, scoring after 41 seconds with just two touches of the ball. Asked about the pressure as a late-game substitute, Agyemang said there was none. 'Going in to change a game when there's not much going your way can actually be more beneficial, you just go in and take a game by the scruff of the neck,' she said. 'That's how I kind of felt the other day. On another day, that could have been three points for us.' Agyemang has also made a good impression on her teammates in her brief time with them, impressing defender Lucy Bronze with her physicality in training. However, Agyemang said coach Sarina Wiegman has talked to her about dialling it down a bit. 'I think I've improved on it, but yeah, Lucy was saying she thinks it's a super strength of mine, and I know Lucy's physical as well, so we like going at it in training,' Agyemang said. The young forward hopes to emulate Lauren James, who she highlighted as a role model and whose dynamic attacking style is similar to her own. James stepped up to be a key player in England's run to the Women's World Cup final in 2023. 'LJ is one of the most technically gifted players I have ever seen, and she's so calm and collected on the ball, and you can see that whether she's in front of goal, whether she's under pressure, she knows what she's doing,' Agyemang said. - AFP
