Filmmakers urge MUBI to sever ties with Sequoia over Israeli military tech investments linked to Gaza genocide
The signatories include prominent international directors such as Aki Kaurismäki, Radu Jude, Miguel Gomes, and Joshua Oppenheimer. Their letter criticises MUBI's decision to accept a $100 million investment from Sequoia in May, citing the venture capital firm's involvement in defense-tech startups with direct ties to Israeli intelligence.
'MUBI's financial growth as a company is now explicitly tied to the genocide in Gaza,' the letter states, pointing to Sequoia's 2024 investment in Kela, a battlefield operating system founded by Israeli military veterans. The filmmakers argue this association contradicts MUBI's identity as a platform committed to global cinema and social responsibility.
MUBI, which previously issued a statement saying investor views do not reflect its own, has declined to comment on the letter.
The signatories also called on MUBI to meet demands set by the activist group Film Workers for Palestine, including:
Publicly condemning Sequoia Capital for 'genocide profiteering'
Removing Sequoia partner Andrew Reed from MUBI's board
Implementing ethical investment and programming policies aligned with PACBI (Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel)
The backlash has already had tangible effects. Festivals and venues such as Glasgow's CCA, Mexico City's Cineteca Nacional, and the Cinemateca de Bogotá have withdrawn from MUBI Fest, while Chile's Valdivia Film Festival announced it would no longer screen films distributed by the company. Programming partner Girls In Film also ended its seven-year collaboration, citing MUBI's prioritisation of 'commercial growth' over ethics.

John Abrahams Tehran to release on ZEE5 on August 14
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) 'Tehran", headlined by Bollywood star John Abraham, will stream on ZEE5 from August 14. Inspired by true events, 'Tehran" is written by Ritesh Shah and Ashish Prakash Verma, and marks the feature directorial debut of ad filmmaker Arun Gopalan. It also stars Manushi Chhillar, Neeru Bajwa and Madhurima Tuli. The film 'dives into the shadowy world of international espionage where one man's allegiance could tip the balance between loyalty and betrayal," according to a press release. The story draws inspiration from the 2012 bomb explosion near the Israeli Embassy in Delhi, a real-life incident that spiraled into complex diplomatic ripples. Amidst this, ACP Rajeev Kumar (Abraham) is pulled into a covert operation that spans continents, ideologies, and fractured alliances, the lines between right and wrong begin to blur. Abraham said he had one of the most intense and layered roles of his career in 'Tehran' ''Tehran' is a truly global film—rooted in real events but resonating far beyond borders. Playing ACP Rajeev Kumar in 'Tehran' has been one of the most intense and layered roles of my career as he is not your conventional patriot. He's a man constantly torn between duty and conscience, and that moral conflict is what makes this story so compelling," he said in the statement. 'This film isn't about good versus evil—it's about navigating the grey. I'm proud to be part of a project that dares to explore these complexities, and I can't wait for audiences to experience it this Independence Day on ZEE5. I am also thankful to ZEE5 for giving a global platform to this film because in all honesty, Tehran is India's first international film," he added. Gopalan called the film 'a mirror held up to a fractured world". ''Tehran', to me, is a mirror held up to a fractured world. A story about shifting loyalties, blurred identities, and the human cost hidden in the shadows of global politics. We approached it with honesty and restraint because the truth it draws from is far from fiction. 'Every decision these characters make carries weight; every silence, every betrayal leaves a mark. I'm thankful to John, Manushi, and the cast for stepping into this world with such courage and authenticity." 'Tehran" is a Maddock Films production in association with Bake My Cake Films. Besides Vijan, Shobhna Yadav and Sandeep Leyzell are also credited as producers on the film. TikTok hires former Israeli instructor Erica Mindel as hate speech policy chief amid rising antisemitism scrutiny
TikTok has appointed Erica Mindel , a self-described 'proud American Jew' and former Israeli military instructor, as its new Public Policy Manager for Hate Speech, a move that comes amid heightened scrutiny over the platform's handling of antisemitic and extremist content. TikTok has not issued an official comment on the appointment. Mindel assumed the full-time, New York-based role in July. She is tasked with shaping the company's hate speech policy, leading strategic initiatives, and serving as TikTok's internal and external expert on antisemitism , according to her LinkedIn profile and job description. Background in diplomacy and defense Live Events Before joining TikTok, Mindel worked as a contractor for the US State Department under former President Biden, advising Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. She also served as Assistant Director of Program Development at the American Jewish Committee (AJC), where she organized policy delegations to Israel involving US media, civic, religious, and academic leaders. Mindel holds degrees in Political Science from the University of Michigan and Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University. In a 2023 AJC video, Mindel recalled being raised in a conservative Jewish household and said her advocacy against antisemitism began during her first month of college, when she fought a pro-BDS resolution. She later made aliyah to Israel, where she served for over two years in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as an instructor in the Armored Corps. The decision to place a former Israeli soldier in charge of hate speech policy has sparked strong reactions online and across civil society. Supporters of the move, including the ADL and Jewish advocacy groups , view it as a timely and necessary step in countering online antisemitism. Critics, however, worry that the appointment could stoke bias in moderation practices, particularly concerning pro-Palestinian voices. TikTok's broader struggles TikTok has long faced criticism for its inconsistent enforcement of content moderation policies and its opaque algorithm, which critics say has amplified extremist, racist, and antisemitic messages. The platform, owned by China's ByteDance , is also contending with potential legislation in the US and Europe that could force stricter regulation of harmful content. In its defense, TikTok has repeatedly said it is committed to making the platform safe for all users and has invested in internal audits and partnerships with NGOs. Mindel's role is one of several new policy-focused hires as TikTok aims to rehabilitate its public image and avoid further government intervention. With antisemitism reportedly at record highs globally, TikTok's next moves will be closely watched. Mindel's challenge lies not only in refining hate speech policy, but also in walking a tightrope between protecting vulnerable communities and preserving freedom of expression in one of the world's most politically charged digital spaces.

Israel's PULS or India's Pinaka? ELBIT Systems launch new rocket said to rival DRDO's Pinaka; let's find out
New Delhi: An Indian defence company has partnered with Israeli company Elbit Systems to manufacture the Precise and Universal Launching System (PULS) Multiple Rocket Launcher (MRL) locally. NIBE Defense and Aerospace Limited, a private sector defence company of India, has signed an agreement to manufacture the Israeli company's Precise and Universal Launching System (PULS) Multiple Rocket Launcher (MRL) in India. What is the competition between India and Israel? That is, the PULS multiple rocket launcher will be manufactured in India itself, which will compete with the Pinaka rocket system, which played an important role in Armenia's fight against Azerbaijan. In a filing given to the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on July 28, defence company NIBE has given information about the agreement and said that the MRL will be developed locally. What does the agreement include? If approved, it can be supplied to the Indian Army. According to the report, this agreement includes transfer of technology and it will be made under the 'Make in India' programme. This will lead to a rapid increase in local manufacturing in India and India will be established as a global supplier of artillery systems. Its Indian variant has been named 'Surya'. The biggest feature of this defence platform will be that it can fire both missiles and rockets from the same platform. This is a highly advanced system, which will have a strike range of up to 300 kilometers and its biggest feature will be to attack accurately. How good is India's Pinaka system? The Indian Army currently operates the Pinaka Multi Barrel Rocket Launch System (MBRLS), which has been jointly developed by DRDO and Indian Defense Industry. This system was first used in the 1999 Kargil war and has been developed several times since then. The range of Pinaka Mk-1 is about 37.5 km, while the range of Mk-2 and ER variants is between 60–90 km. This system can fire 12 rockets in just one minute. Apart from this, the specialty of the Pinaka rocket system is that it can be deployed in different parts of India, such as hilly areas, deserts, and plains. What are the features of Indian and Israeli systems? The PULS has a range of 300 kilometers, which can target a large part of Pakistan while Pinaka Mk-1 rocket has a payload of 100 kg and can carry a variety of warheads, such as anti-tank mines and blast-cum-pre-fragmented high explosives. The biggest feature of the PULS system is its universal launching capability as it can fire rockets and missiles ranging from 122 mm to 300 mm from a single platform. Apart from this, PULS supports different types of rocket calibers, so that operators can choose different shells according to the needs during the mission and fire them at the enemies. For example, it can launch 122 mm rockets with a range of 40 km, 160 mm rockets with a range of 45 km, 306 mm rockets with a range of 150 km and can also easily fire heavy rockets and missiles like Xtra and Predator Hawk, which have a range of 300 km.
