NYCFC face Charlotte FC, look to improve on road
The next task for New York City FC will be posting more positive results on the road.
While the team (9-7-4 overall, 31 points) is an impressive 8-3 at home, it is about to embark on a four-match road stretch beginning Saturday night against Charlotte FC.
NYCFC are only 1-4-4 on the road.
'We know the places we go, especially in the summer, it's hard there,' NYCFC defender Mitja Ilenic said.
New York City hasn't won consecutive matches since May 17 and 25 but picked up a 3-1 home victory in its most recent game, July 3 against Toronto FC.
In their last three victories, NYCFC have scored at least three goals each time under coach Pascal Jansen.
New York City is 1-1-2 in its last four road matches but has never won at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium.
Charlotte (8-11-2, 26 points) failed to hold a two-goal lead in its most recent outing, drawing 2-2 with visiting Orlando City SC last Saturday.
Coach Dean Smith's Charlotte club is dealing with uncertain rosters and is winless in its last four matches (0-3-1).
Charlotte had Patrick Agyemang back at practice earlier this week after the U.S. men's national team striker played in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. He then was absent from Thursday's workout amid ongoing contract negotiations. That puts his status in question for this weekend, Smith said.
'I wanted to see where his feelings was,' Smith said of a conversation with the player. '... It's always about money.'
Meanwhile, Saturday's game looks better for NYCFC. The return from the U.S. national team of elite goalkeeper Matt Freese comes after Tomas Romero built some solid credentials in his absence. That should help create depth for the team.
'I think I got this opportunity to play,' Romero said. 'I'm super grateful for it. I did everything I could to show the coaches what I could do. ... I think it's good as a team that the coaches know that they have somebody to depend on.'
Charlotte is counting on Pep Biel, who has seven goals and nine assists in 20 matches. He reached the 20-goal contributions (goals plus assists) career mark with Charlotte last weekend, in 29 total matches.

Alex Palou rode a dominant start to the season to a 129-point lead in the points race, the largest margin this deep in a season since IndyCar began using the scoring system. After the Spaniard finished 12th in Toronto, O'Ward sliced that deficit to 99 with four races to go. O'Ward started back in 10th but led 30 out of 90 laps in his No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet and beat the Netherlands' Rinus VeeKay by 0.4843 seconds. Kyffin Simpson of the Cayman Islands was third, his first podium finish in two IndyCar seasons. 'I knew I had a great car under me to race with and the guys nailed it on the strategy,' O'Ward said in his post-race interview. That strategy was for O'Ward to start the race on his alternate set of tires before moving to his primary tires early on Lap 3. 'I was feeling so good on the (primary) tires all weekend really. We were just struggling to get the alternates to work in qualifying. Sadly, that's the one you need to transfer,' O'Ward said. Palou, conversely, started on his primary tires from the No. 2 position. The seven-time winner this year led 37 laps but faded down the stretch. 'Well, I chose the strategy, so that's what we did wrong today,' Palou said. 'I was pushing for that strategy. I thought it was going to give us the best opportunity to win. I wanted to be up front trying to avoid being trapped in traffic.' Simpson was the biggest mover of the day after starting the race 13th. 'It was a crazy race,' Simpson said. 'So many ups and downs. At one point we thought we were in the worst position, and then very quickly it turned into one of the best positions.'

Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Jack Draper out of Toronto tourney

Sinner is recovering from an elbow injury sustained during his fourth-round match at Wimbledon; however he persevered and went on to win the tournament. The 23-year-old Italian won the Canadian ATP 1000 Masters Tournament in 2023, the last time it was held in Toronto. 'Winning that title in Toronto two years ago was the start of a really special moment for me,' Sinner, the World No. 1, said in a statement. 'But after speaking with my team, I have to recover.' Djokovic, 38, is nursing a groin injury and the fifth-ranked Draper, 23, is dealing with an arm injury. Australia's Jordan Thompson also withdrew from the tournament, which is slated to be played from July 27 through Aug. 7 at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto. Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena, Austria's Sebastian Ofner, Russia's Roman Safiullin and American Aleksandar Kovacevic were inserted into the main draw. Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev of Germany, the World No. 2 and 3 players, respectively, are entered in the tournament.

Sam Surridge ties Messi for MLS goals lead as Nashville blanks Toronto
(Photo credit: Steve Roberts-Imagn Images) Sam Surridge scored his MLS lead-tying 18th goal to push Nashville SC near the top of the Eastern Conference standings with a 1-0 victory over visiting Toronto FC on Saturday night. Surridge's first-half tally pulled him even with Lionel Messi, who scored his 17th and 18th goals earlier Saturday in Miami's 5-1 home win over the New York Red Bulls. The win ensured Nashville (14-5-5, 47 points) will finish the weekend no worse than second in the East, and first if Cincinnati fails to win its match at Real Salt Lake later Saturday. Nashville won their second straight and sixth out of seven, and have lost just once in their last 18 in all competitions dating back to April 26. Goalkeeper Sean Johnson made four saves to keep Toronto (5-12-6, 21 points) in the match, while Joe Willis kept his ninth clean sheet while not having to make a single stop. The Reds were shut out for the first time in six games, scoring in the last three despite the departure of Italian attacking stars Federico Bernardeschi and Lorenzo Insigne at the beginning of July. Two of Johnson's best stops came against 2022 MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar. The first of those came in the 28th minute when the German attacker unleashed a left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty box that appeared bound for the bottom right corner.
