Chiefs' Xavier Worthy cleared to practice after concussion protocol as Drue Tranquill departs

Associated Press ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy cleared the concussion protocol and was back at practice on Friday, a good sign for a wide receiver group that has had its share of bumps and bruises throughout training camp. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Worthy was placed in the protocol after hitting his head while trying to make a catch during practice Wednesday. But an evaluation showed that fluid in Worthy's ear was causing problems with equilibrium, and that he did not have an actual concussion, allowing doctors to clear him quickly. The Chiefs were still missing Marquise Brown to an ankle injury and fellow wide receiver Skyy Moore to an ailing hamstring on Friday, while linebacker Drue Tranquill was forced to depart practice after straining his back. Worthy is expected to be a big part of a Kansas City offense that wants to push the ball downfield more this season. He set the NFL scouting combine record last year for the fastest 40-yard dash, and the second-year pro turned those dynamic numbers into a rookie season that produced 59 catches for 638 yards and six touchdowns. Worthy then had 19 catches for 287 yards and three more scores in three playoff games, including the Super Bowl. In other news, the Chiefs waived injured cornerbacks Darius Rush and Eric Scott Jr. They signed wide receiver Key'Shawn Smith and cornerbacks Ajani Carter and Azizi Hearn to provide some depth at those positions. ___ AP NFL: recommended Item 1 of 3

Wrigley Field chosen to host 2027 All-Star Game. Manfred downplays spat with Phillies' Harper

Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — The Friendly Confines are set to host The Midsummer Classic. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred made it official, announcing during a news conference Friday at home plate that the 2027 All-Star Game will be held at Wrigley Field. Baseball's second-oldest ballpark hasn't hosted an All-Star Game since 1990. Chicago Cubs great Ryne Sandberg — who died Monday of cancer — won the Home Run Derby that year. Wrigley also hosted All-Star Games in 1947 and 1962. Manfred, who was joined by Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, cited the 'amazing transformation' of the ballpark and surrounding streets in the past decade as part of a massive renovation by the Ricketts family. The Cubs first approached the league about hosting an All-Star Game eight years ago. But for a variety of reasons, including competition from other cities and safety concerns with the ballpark in a bustling neighborhood, they weren't awarded one until now. Chicago cleared a big hurdle in June, when the city passed an ordinance allowing sidewalks along Addison Street to be widened and removable bollards to be installed around the ballpark. 'I think we're probably overdue in terms of being at Wrigley,' Manfred said. 'The Ricketts family, city of Chicago and state of Illinois made a tremendous investment not just in the ballpark but the area around it. I think it'll be a fantastic venue for our All-Star celebration.' Wrigley Field is set to join Cleveland's Municipal Stadium and the old Yankee Stadium as the only ballparks to host four All-Star Games. The city of Chicago will host the event for the eighth time, second only to New York with nine. Pritzker, a Cubs fan, called Wrigley Field 'the perfect place to host the All-Star Game.' 'For over 100 years, this has been the beating heart of the baseball world and a shining emblem of our nation's favorite pastime,' he said. 'There's no place like it.' Ricketts lived in the neighborhood the last time the Cubs hosted the All-Star Game. But he wasn't able to attend. 'I didn't have dough,' he said. Ricketts figures to have an up-close view this time, assuming the game is played as scheduled. There is some doubt with baseball's collective bargaining agreement set to expire following the 2026 season, though Manfred expressed confidence the owners and players will avoid a lengthy work stoppage. Asked about a potential contingency plan if there is a strike or lockout, he said: 'My contingency plan is to make an agreement with the players and play the 2027 season.' Manfred and Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper had a spirited exchange last week during a question-and-answer session between the commissioner and the team. In that meeting, Manfred spoke about the media landscape and working together to grow the sport, according to a person with knowledge of the conversation. At some point, Harper told Manfred if he was there to talk about a salary cap, he could 'get the (expletive) out' of the clubhouse. 'I think more has been made out of this than needs to be made out of it,' Manfred said Friday. 'Bryce expressed his views. At the end of the meeting, we shook hands and went our separate ways. Not all that significant.' Philadelphia hosts the 2026 All-Star Game. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 2

Candace Parker calls effort in WNBA All-Star Game 'awful'

Associated Press Seven-time WNBA All-Star Candace Parker was unimpressed by the effort in the All-Star Game. Parker criticized the game on a podcast that aired Wednesday, calling it 'awful.' 'Y'all cannot come out there with those shirts of 'Pay Us What You Owe Us' and then do that,' Parker told All-Star Aliyah Boston on their new podcast 'Post Moves.' Parker was referencing the warmup shirts both teams wore at the July 19 game in response to failed collective-bargaining negotiations with the league earlier that week. Players are fighting for higher pay and better benefits, among other improvements. The game set a WNBA All-Star record for points scored and Napheesa Collier set the individual scoring mark with 36 points. Team Collier beat Team Clark 151-131. Defense was at a minimum as the league's stars allowed each other to get shots up without contest. It wasn't unlike the all-star games across other pro leagues, but Parker was looking for more from WNBA players at a time when they're in the spotlight. 'I think on one of the biggest stages, in an All-Star setting that was invested in more than any other All-Star game previously. … I think it would've really maximized the moment.' Fever forward Boston, who played on Team Clark, defended the performance of her and her peers. 'An All-Star Game, where we have another game in two days, I think that it's OK to just go out there and hoop and have some fun,' she said. 'Because on Tuesday, we were back at it, and we were playing and we were showing once again why we deserve to get paid.' ___ AP WNBA:
