Smith Rowe 'needs to find right consistency'

BBC News31-03-2025

Fulham's Premier League game against Arsenal on Tuesday could see midfielder Emile Smith Rowe make his first appearance at Emirates Stadium since he left the Gunners at the start of this season.Fulham boss Marco Silva said there have been "some ups and downs" during the 24-year-old's first season at Craven Cottage, adding: "This doesn't surprise us for a player who was not playing enough football for the past two seasons."He had a very good impact in the first few months, but after the second international break he was down - December was a difficult month for him. He needs to find the right consistency in his game to perform at a very good level and this is the main thing for us."Smith Rowe has five goals and two assists in 32 appearances for the Whites, showing flashes of the ability that won him England recognition three seasons ago."I don't doubt his talent and quality, but the Premier League demands so many things from you and you always have to be in very good shape and top level physically," Silva said. "This is something we have been working on with Emile."It is not going to be because the game is against Arsenal that he is going to have more hunger or not. The season so far from Emile is not about the hunger - it is many aspects."I can take many positives from him so far - he has probably played more than 20- 25 games and we have seen an impact in half of them. For a player like him, we are working with him to have more impact in a consistent way."

Conor Coady says Rangers move would be ‘unbelievable' as Ibrox icon hails defender as ‘perfect fit'

The Leicester City defender has been linked with a summer switch to Glasgow as Russell Martin looks to beef up his backline as part of squad overhaul. And the former Spurs striker – who was part of Steven Gerrard's title-winning side in 2021 – revealed Coady is keen to move north if a deal can be struck. Defoe told the Daily Record: 'I spoke to Conor and we had a good conversation about Rangers. 'He knows how big the club is and I think he's the perfect fit for Rangers. 'I've obviously spoken to him and I just hope the deal gets done now. 'I told him how big Rangers are. I said: 'Trust me, Rangers are bigger than most Premier League clubs'. 'I told Conor that I wish I'd gone there five years before I did. 'Conor is keen on the move, 100 percent. 'Obviously, they have to sort out a few things with Leicester and I'm not sure what is going on with that. 'But honestly, his eyes lit up. Frank Lampard corrects 'all over the place' Conor Coady live on TV during Euro 2024 coverage 'He said to me: 'J, if I get the chance to play for a club like that, it would be unbelievable'. 'And the great thing is, he's still only 32. It's not like he's 35. 'He can go there, sign a four-year contract and really make a difference to Rangers. 'He can lead them and drive that changing room. 'I don't want any other club to get him. Rangers can't miss out on signings like this. 'If we're looking to go in the right direction as a football club, take this opportunity. 'Because it's a guy who I know would love to be at Rangers. 'When you get players into the building who appreciate being there - even though he's been at top clubs and with England - it's priceless.' Defoe says he can see Coady as a future Rangers leader – and even told current skipper James Tavernier as much. 4 He added: 'Conor is a natural captain. 'But I even messaged Tav on Saturday night and told him - make sure the club gets this deal for Conor done. 'Because these are the types of people we need inside the club, especially in that position. 'And hopefully they can add a few more, like a midfielder and centre-forward, so they have that spine of the team. 'Conor can lead from the back and he'll be a massive signing for Rangers. 'He's a natural leader and you don't get many of them. Some players develop that over their career. 'But with someone like Conor, I think he's been like that from a young kid, it's natural. 'He was speaking to me about standards and driving the right things in the changing room. 'That's what Rangers is all about, standards. 'It's about how you live, what you do on and off the pitch, because you're representing a huge football club and you have to give the fans what they deserve.' Jermain Defoe reveals Conor Coady Rangers transfer stance

The former Ibrox striker, who worked alongside Coady during TV coverage of England's under-21 Euro Championship final win, is hopeful of a long-term deal for the Leicester City centre-back. Defoe told the Daily Record: "I spoke to Conor and we had a good conversation about Rangers. "He knows how big the club is and I think he's the perfect fit for Rangers. "I've obviously spoken to him and I just hope the deal gets done now. "I told him how big Rangers are. "I said: 'Trust me, Rangers are bigger than most Premier League clubs.'" Coady, under contract at Leicester's King Power Stadium until 2026, would require a transfer fee. Rangers previously tried to sign him in 2024 but failed to reach an agreement. Defoe, who moved to Rangers in 2020, continued: "I told Conor that I wish I'd gone there five years before I did. "Conor is keen on the move, 100 percent. "Obviously, they have to sort out a few things with Leicester and I'm not sure what is going on with that. "But honestly, his eyes lit up. "He said to me: 'J, if I get the chance to play for a club like that, it would be unbelievable.'" Defoe added: "I don't want any other club to get him. "Rangers can't miss out on signings like this. Man City out to continue fresh start at Club World Cup by reaching last eight

City were the only team in the tournament to win all three of their group games and they will hope to carry that momentum into their last-16 outing in Orlando. Unlike Chelsea, who are trying to add a final flourish to a 2024-25 season in which they won the Conference League, City have been trying to make a fresh start in the United States. Manager Pep Guardiola has viewed the competition as the start of a new campaign in order to make a clean break from what was a frustrating past year. That approach so far seems to have been vindicated with the side, bolstered by some new signings, playing with a fresh vigour. Wydad Casablanca and Al Ain were swept aside by an aggregate of 8-0 before City thrashed Juventus 5-2 in a statement performance last Thursday. 'We're still early in the season, but I think the energy is different,' said Matheus Nunes, who shone at right-back against the Italians. 'I think last year we were a little down in terms of spirit, but we know what it means to play for Manchester City and this season that's definitely going to change. 'What I like most about this tournament is that we entered all the games to win and it has to be that way until the final.' All our @FIFACWC group stage goals in 45 seconds ⏱️#FIFACWC | LIVE on — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 28, 2025 After four successive Premier League titles – a period that included the glorious treble of 2022-23 – City fell below their own high standards last season. They failed to muster a strong defence of their domestic crown and were eliminated from the Champions League before the last 16. They even failed to land the FA Cup as a consolation prize as they lost to Crystal Palace in the final. The underwhelming performances prompted the start of a squad overhaul in January with the arrivals of Nico Gonzalez, Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis. That has continued this summer with the signings of Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli. Nunes admits he does not know why last season was so disappointing but is confident the corner has been turned. 'I think a lot of things happened last year that didn't go well,' the Portuguese said. 'I don't know the reasons. 'But I think there is a very fundamental principle for all games – go on to the field to win the three points. I think this year is going to be different.'
