Perak to expand onion cultivation with allocation from federal govt
The Perak Mentri Besar stated that the pilot project began in the Batang Padang district and would be expanded to the Kuala Kangsar, Muallim, and Perak Tengah districts.
He said the state would identify the areas that meet the criteria for growing onions.
'We have begun branding them as 'Perak onions'. They are tasty and sweet,' he told reporters at the closing of The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) Fest 2025 at the Rural Transformation Centre here on Sunday (June 1).
'Even though onions can technically be planted anywhere, we need to find the most suitable land to get the best quality onions,' he added.
Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister, Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, was also present.
In his speech at the event, Arthur stated that the successful production of Perak onions was a commendable achievement, and it was the first commercially produced onions in Malaysia.
He said this success is the result of a collaborative effort between the Agriculture Department and the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi).
'The ministry has allocated an additional RM1.4mil to Perak to expand the cultivation area for the onions this year,' he said.

Meanwhile, Cahya Mata group managing director Datuk Seri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib said the Mambong Clinker Line 2 is a key step in strengthening Sarawak's cement supply chain, boosting capacity, reducing import reliance and ensuring future demand reliability. "Beyond production, it reflects Cahya Mata's commitment to building a modern facility that positions us as possibly the greenest cement producer in the region," he said. Cahya Mata said the facility will feature state-of-the-art technologies to improve environmental performance and energy efficiency, including a waste heat recovery system capable of generating up to six megawatt of power and an advanced dust filtration system designed to reduce dust emissions to more than half of the current regulatory limit. The Clinker Line 2 will also employ high-efficiency equipment to reduce energy use and carbon dioxide emissions, while incorporating locally sourced alternative raw materials and fuels to further limit reliance on fossil fuels. Mavcom's regulatory functions to transition to CAAM from Aug 1
PETALING JAYA: The regulatory functions of the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) will officially be transferred to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) effective Aug 1, as part of the government's ongoing aviation sector rationalisation plan. This transition, announced by the transport minister on June 23, follows the enactment of the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Dissolution) Act 2024 [Act 856], which provides the legal framework for Mavcom's dissolution and the consolidation of its responsibilities under CAAM. In a statement, Mavcom said CAAM will assume full regulatory authority over the country's civil aviation sector, taking on a broad range of functions including licensing, allocation of air traffic rights, airport development, rural air services, economic regulation, competition matters and general industry oversight. CAAM will also manage digital platforms such as AeroFile and AeroLicence, which handle overflight and landing permits, as well as licensing applications. Mavcom executive chairman Datuk Seri Saripuddin Kasim said the priority during this transition is to ensure minimal disruption to stakeholders and the public, while maintaining the momentum of Malaysia's aviation sector. He expressed appreciation to all past and present commission and committee members, as well as Mavcom staff, for their dedication and professionalism in upholding integrity and impartiality. Their efforts, he said, have significantly shaped aviation policy, protected consumer rights and supported industry growth. CAAM will take over Mavcom's regulatory roles and responsibilities within the civil aviation sector on Aug 1. Mavcom said this will see CAAM managing a wide range of functions, including licensing, the allocation of air traffic rights, airport development, rural air services, economic and competition matters, as well as overall regulatory oversight. CAAM will also handle the operation of digital platforms such as AeroFile and AeroLicence, used for processing overflight and landing permits, along with licensing applications. "As part of this transition, Mavcom's existing regulatory functions and responsibilities will be assumed by CAAM, in accordance with the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Dissolution) Act 2024 [Act 856]," it said. Mavcom executive chairman Datuk Seri Saripuddin Kasim said the commission's main focus is to ensure the transition process is smooth and seamless, with minimal impact on stakeholders and the public.
