Beloved British actress edges out Zendaya as favourite for Bond Girl
There's a new name in the Bond girl conversation, just days after it was finally confirmed that Denis Villeneuve will be directing the upcoming 007 film.
The Canadian director, best known for directing Dune and Dune: Part Two, as well as Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Sicario, and Prisoners, is now stepping up to the directorial plate amid major upheaval at Bond HQ.
Amazon Studios officially purchased MGM for $8.45billion (£6.7billion) in 2022, with a new agreement over creative control meaning Bond — and whoever is next to play 007 – is entirely under the streamer's control.
Now that a director is officially attached, the speculation around who will play who has ramped up a notch.
Zendaya has been top of minds to take on the iconic role of the next Bond girl – admittedly, not the best terminology for the iconic female lead – but Florence Pugh's name has now also entered the conversation.
Florence Pugh has taken over as the favourite to be the next Bond Girl, at 11/8, according to Gambling.com.
She already has a working relationship with Villeneuve, having joined the Dune fold for the second film.
While Pugh once ruled out being the first female Bond, she has signalled her interest in portraying a spy. She told Digital Spy: 'I think everyone's always interested in playing a spy, right?
'That's something we grow up admiring, which is so strange, but it's just a very clever and quick world that we all want to be a part of.'
Pugh's Dune co-star Zendaya – who was directed by Villeneuve in both his sci-fi films and is set to reprise her role in the upcoming third – is also in contention to be the Bond role, currently at 6/4 odds.
She has also been produced by new Bond producer Amy Pascal in a number of films, including last year's sensational sweat-fest Challengers. More Trending
The other names currently in contention according to the bookies include Ana de Armas, who had a scene-stealing turn in No Time To Die as Paloma, as well as Emma Watson and Rebecca Ferguson.
It comes after Villeneuve shared an emotional statement about taking on the next film, saying: 'Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007.
'I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory.'

Tom Holland, Harris Dickinson and Jacob Elordi are rumoured to be at the top of Amazon's James Bond wishlist, according to a new report. Variety has learned from insiders that the new iteration of 007 would be under 30 and the three actors could be fighting it out for the role. No meetings have taken place and Amazon has yet to confirm anything. The report emerges days after the Dune and Arrival director Denis Villeneuve was announced as the first director of Bond's new era under the Amazon-MGM banner. The French-Canadian film-maker, now working on the third Dune movie, reportedly beat out Conclave's Edward Berger, Westworld's Jonathan Nolan, Paddington's Paul King and Shaun of the Dead's Edgar Wright for the role. 'I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come,' Villeneuve said in a statement. 'This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour.' Early rumours had suggested the Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón would step up, having worked with Bond's new producer David Heyman before, but he removed himself from the race. Cuarón is set to work on the darkly funny drama Jane with Charlize Theron instead. Holland, best known for playing Spider-Man, has also starred in the video game hit Uncharted and Apple series The Crowded Room. He'll next be seen in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey before returning for the fourth Spider-Man movie. The 29-year-old actor once tried to pitch a 007 spin-off to Sony. 'I had a meeting after or during Spider-Man 2 with Sony to pitch this idea of a young Bond film that I'd come up with,' he said in 2022. 'It was the origin story of James Bond. It didn't really make sense. It didn't work. It was the dream of a young kid, and I don't think the Bond estate were particularly interested.' Dickinson, known for Triangle of Sadness and Babygirl, recently received rave reviews for his directorial debut Urchin at the Cannes film festival. 'I mean, listen, man, you'd be a fool to not entertain that role,' he said when asked about playing Bond in 2023. 'I'm loving seeing the development of James Bond and seeing how it changes over the years. I think Daniel Craig was such a good Bond that I'd almost be quite frightened to try … Who knows what they're doing with Bond? I'm intrigued.' Elordi is the only Australian of the bunch, but could follow in the footsteps of George Lazenby who played Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The actor, best known for his role in TV drama Euphoria and Sofia Coppola's Priscilla, will soon be seen in Emerald Fennell's unconventional adaptation of Wuthering Heights with Margot Robbie. In 2023, Elordi called rumours that he was being linked to the role 'beautiful' and added: 'I just like that people maybe want to put me in their movies. That makes me really glad.' The release date for the next film is yet to be announced, but Variety is claiming that anything sooner than 2028 would be impossible. The 26th Bond film will follow Daniel Craig's final outing No Time to Die which made over $774m at the global box office. Earlier this year, in a reported $1bn deal, Amazon MGM bought the rights to gain 'creative control' of the franchise. In March, producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman were hired to take charge of the new film.

EastEnders' Mary the Punk star unrecognisable 37 years since quitting soap
Mary 'the Punk' Smith was a big part of the original EastEnders line-up when it first aired in 1985, with viewers fondly remembering the character who left just three years later EastEnders legend Mary 'the Punk' was part of the original cast of 23 who first arrived on our TV screens back in 1985. Other now-familiar faces first setting foot in Albert Square back then included Pauline Fowler (Wendy Richard), Ali Osman (Nejdet Adamson/Salih) and Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean). Mary was a young, single mother who ended up in all manner of scrapes, largely due to her irresponsible nature and lack of willingness to heed good advice. She was unable to read or write and hid herself under punk make-up – a northern girl all alone in a southern city. For Canadian-British actress Linda Davidson, a role in the brand-new BBC One soap was the big acting break she needed, having just finished learning her craft at the prestigious Italia Conti Academy in London. During her time on the soap she became romantically involved with co-star Nejdet Salih, who played Ali Osman and ran the café and his own taxi firm. Meanwhile, Mary's three years in Albert Square, saw herself in a number of difficult situations, with storylines focusing on unemployment and drugs, as well as one where she dabbled with prostitution – that drew controversy for linking it with single mums. However, Linda quit the soap for pastures new in 1988 when she was offered a part in a play. She went on to appear in TV shows including First of the Summer Wine, Casualty, The House of Eliott and The Bill, and also starred in a revival of The Rocky Horror Show in London's West End. After that, she secured a role looking after the BBC's drama websites and became editor of E4 interactive in the 2000s. Viewers assumed they'd seen the last of Mary in EastEnders, never to return. But Linda has reprised the role twice since 1988, firstly in 2019 for the funeral of the soap's beloved character, Dr Harold Legg, alongside actor Tom Watt who played Lofty Holloway, leaving fans 'in awe'. Reflecting on her EastEnders homecoming at the time, Linda said: "EastEnders was my first proper family. It gave me stability and a fantastic foundation from which to build an incredible life. She returned again in 2022 for the funeral of Dot Branning after the actress who played her, June Brown, sadly died aged 95.

'I was a huge star in 1990s but devastating diagnosis forced me out of limelight'
Alannah Myles was propelled to fame in the early 1990s with her iconic hit Black Velvet, but 36 years after releasing her self-titled debut album, the singer has been through a hidden struggle Rewinding over 30 years, soft rock enthusiasts couldn't get enough of the Canadian songstress Alannah Myles and her legendary anthem 'Black Velvet'. The single catapulted Myles to international fame, topping charts in the United States and earning her the prestigious Grammy Award. However, 36 years on from her eponymous debut album, Alannah has endured unseen battles away from the spotlight. Her ascent to fame largely came on the back of 'Black Velvet', an ode to Elvis Presley, its lyrics a poignant representation of his life and charm. It's said that the inspiration for 'Black Velvet' struck Alannah after she visited Memphis for the 10th anniversary of the King of Rock n Roll's passing. Reflecting in 2021, the artist remarked: "It is a country blues song with a chorus, ushering in a time when country music won the hearts of the masses away from disco, punk, and grunge music. If it was a crappy song no one would remember it." The track hasn't just garnered a staggering 358 million streams on Spotify; it also impressed the critics, bagging the award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance at the 1991 Grammys in addition to multiple Juno Awards on her home turf, reports the Mirror US. Facing immense anticipation for her follow-up release, Alannah presented her second album 'Rockinghorse', which featured renowned tracks such as 'Our World Our Times' and 'Song Instead of a Kiss'. She would indeed receive another Grammy nomination, but her subsequent album didn't quite reach the success of her initial release. Following two more albums in the 90s, 'Alannah' and 'A Rival', she took a hiatus from music. In subsequent years, Myles encountered significant health hurdles that drastically affected her life. In 2017, the singer sustained a severe leg injury that was far from a minor inconvenience, severely limiting her mobility and confining her largely to her home for an extended period. Allanah was also diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, an auto-immune condition affecting spinal joints. This ailment can lead to intense stiffness and pain in her back during routine activities and even cause discomfort as she sits. In a conversation with City News, she disclosed: "Now I have issues with being able to sit. That's why when you see me in concert, you see me on a chair. I'm sitting upright. It's painful for me to sit down, so I can't really go anywhere. "I can't sit in a wheelchair. I can't go to a concert, parties, or even medical visits without a padded stretcher. I have no life now as a result of not being able to get myself up independently which makes it only worse... I can get up to walk, but I need help doing it." Despite the disease affecting her physical health, Alannah remained resilient and continued to produce new music. In 2018, she reunited her former band and re-recorded some of her iconic hits, independently releasing them separate from her previous label.
