Vermont Senate backs medical debt-relief bill
Senate Bill 27 would also prevent hospitals from reporting unpaid medical bills to credit-reporting agencies, as well as remove negative marks on the debtor's credit report.
State Treasurer Mike Pieciak, who announced the plan with lawmakers in January, said the measure would 'provide life-changing relief to tens of thousands of Vermonters' without raising taxes or fees.
Pieciak said the state would make a one-time investment of $1 million using funds previously appropriated to the Treasurer's Office and purchase medical debt from providers 'at pennies on the dollar.'
In January, Piecek estimated that 62,000 Vermonters — more than 1 in 10 adults — hold medical debt.
The Bill's sponsors — Sen. Ginny Lyons and Rep. Alyssa Black — say people with unpaid medical debt often put off seeking care, which can put them out of work and lead to more costly treatments later.
The Vermont Department of Health's 2021 Vermont Household Health Insurance Survey found that the fear of medical debt impacted 85,000 Vermonters' health care decisions.

Barre based organization aims to support fathers
BARRE, Vt (ABC22/FOX44) – In the granite city, a new organization is putting parents – specifically fathers – in the spotlight. A father of four, Josh Miller had his first son at 19. 'Being a part of my sons life was really important to me because I didn't have that growing up' Miller explains. Raised by a single mother, Miller spent much of his early parenting years a single father himself. 'I loved it, but there was a lot about parenting I didn't know,' Miller recalls. He went on to have multiple careers working with vulnerable and at-risk Vermonters, including serving as the executive director of The Family Room in Burlington's old north end. 'A lot of those guys didn't have their dads, or maybe they weren't the best role model for them.' It's through this work Miller was inspired to start Vermont Fatherhood – a community space for fathers to learn and support one another on their parenting journey. 'If you have all the things you need, parenting is still hard,' says Miller. 'Relationships are hard, co-parenting is hard, and so to have a space where you can go to when things get bad or stressful to get some support makes a huge difference.' Vermont Fatherhood offers various different programs, all aimed at helping fathers show up not only for their kids, but for themselves. 'We've got a couple playgroups on Monday's and Friday's, and story time on Wednesday,' says Miller. He also offers a 'training camp' for new dads, drop-in groups, and one-on-one coaching. 'Just come, play, hang out, relax – I'll have some coffee going and guys just get to connect with other guys.' Governor signs 'Vermonters Feeding Vermonters' grant program
MONTPELIER, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – Vermont farmers and hungry Vermonters will soon have an easier time finding each other. Governor Phil Scott signed House Bill 167 (H. 167) on Tuesday, a bill that provides state support for the Vermonters Feeding Vermonters program of the Vermont Foodbank, a food bank that buys directly from local farmers by agreeing to a set price, quantity, and delivery schedule before the growing season. Read the full text of the bill hereDownload The bill says in part: 'Food insecurity in Vermont, and across the country, has increased in recent years after a decrease during the COVID-19 pandemic… for local food purchased from Vermont farms, every dollar spent contributes an additional $0.60 to the local economy.' Vermont Foodbank shows off new renovations The Vermonters Feeding Vermonters program bought over 5.7 million pounds of food from 299 Vermont farms in 2025. In addition to providing annual grants to the program, the bill also allows subgrants to community partners who buy directly from smaller local farms and farm stands.
