Vanderbilt beats Oklahoma in SEC Baseball Tournament
The weekend will be long in Norman for the Oklahoma baseball team.
OU saw its regular season come to an end Thursday at the Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament. Fourth-seeded Vanderbilt knocked off the 12th-seeded Sooners in the quarterfinals, 6-1.
Now, Oklahoma, which is a practical lock for the NCAA Tournament, will see where its off to next on Sunday, when the field of 64 teams is announced. The Sooners' defeat at the hands of Vandy all but ensures the longshot hope of hosting a Norman Regional will not come to fruition.
Vanderbilt struck for four runs in the third inning off Oklahoma starter Cade Crossland. The Commodores tallied the four runs off four hits and a Sooners error. OU, which has still only scored more than five runs once since April 25, couldn't get things going offensively enough to rally.
Things were so rough offensively for Oklahoma, their lone run came almost by accident. Sam Christiansen was hit by a pitch to start the fourth inning. He advanced to second when Jaxon Willits walked, then took third on a passed ball. An RBI groundout from scored him. That's all Oklahoma, which picked up just two hits as a team, would get in the inning and the game.
Vanderbilt took three of the four games played against Oklahoma this season and is likely to end up hosting the Nashville Regional. The Commodores are unlikely, however, to earn a national seed.
Oklahoma is seeking to avoid a similar fate: The Sooners would prefer not landing in a nationally-seeded team's Regional. The good news is the SEC is expected to earn at least four of the eight such seeds, meaning Oklahoma's chances are smaller than most other teams'.

Nelson retires first 16 Royals, Carroll returns in Diamondbacks' 7-1 victory

PHOENIX (AP) — Ryne Nelson retired the first 16 Kansas City batters and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Royals 7-1 on Saturday to end a three-game losing streak. Nelson (5-2), who moved into the rotation full-time when Corbin Burnes was sidelined for the season by elbow surgery, gave up four hits and one run over seven innings. The right-hander threw 86 pitches, walked none and struck out five. Freddy Fermin's sharp single to center with one out in the sixth ended Nelson's perfect-game bid. Fermin scored on Bobby Witt Jr.'s two-out single. Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suárez had RBI singles in the third off Michael Wacha (4-9), and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled in two runs in the fifth for Arizona. Gurriel also tripled in the seventh off Taylor Clarke and scored on James McCann's double. Wacha lasted four-plus innings, giving up four hits and four runs. He threw 97 pitches, walking four and striking out four. Randal Grichuk hit an inside-the-park homer in the eighth. With a man on base, he hit a long fly to right-center that bounced away from outfielders Jac Caglianone and Kyle Isbel and into center field as Grichuk scored standing up for his fifth homer of the season. Before the game, the Diamondbacks activated outfielder Corbin Carroll from the injured list. The 2023 National League Rookie of the Year, who has 20 homers and a major league-leading nine triples, was 0 for 5 in his return. He had been sidelined since June 18, when he sustained a chip fracture in his left wrist when he was hit by a pitch in Toronto. Utilityman Tim Tawa was optioned to Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. Key moment Gurriel's two-out, two-run double off reliever John Schreiber made it 4-0 in the fifth. Key stat Nelson is 3-0 with a 2.01 ERA in his last five starts. Up next Royals RHP Michael Lorenzen (4-8, 4.95) opposes Diamondbacks RHP Anthony DeSclafani (0-0, 4.82) on Sunday the series finale. ___ AP MLB:

Rafaela homers as Red Sox rout Nationals 10-3 for 10,000th win in franchise history

Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Ceddanne Rafaela homered, Walker Buehler earned his first road victory since April 26, and the Boston Red Sox routed the Washington Nationals 10-3 to earn the 10,000th victory in franchise history Saturday. Romy Gonzalez had three hits for Boston (45-45), which has won five of seven. The Red Sox are the second American League franchise to reach 10,000 victories, joining the New York Yankees. Daylen Lile extended his hitting streak to 12 games for Washington (37-52), which is tied for a season-high 15 games under .500. The Nationals fell to 18-27 at home, the third-worst record in the majors behind Colorado and the Athletics. Just as they did in Friday's 11-2 victory over Washington, the Red Sox broke it open with a seven-run inning. Roman Anthony made it 3-0 in the third with an RBI single, and four batters later Jarren Duran hit a two-run triple to right-center. Nationals starter Mitchell Parker (5-9) misplayed Abraham Toro's grounder to allow Duran to score, and Rafaela hit the next pitch into the seats in left field to make it 8-0. Gonzalez tacked on a two-out RBI single to finish the outburst. Gonzalez and Rob Refsnyder had RBI doubles in the first to open the scoring. Buehler (6-6) allowed three runs — two earned — in five-plus innings. He improved to 3-1 with a 2.67 ERA in six lifetime appearances against Washington. Parker tied a career high with nine runs allowed, though only four were earned. He gave up 10 hits and struck out four in six innings. Key moment Parker's third-inning error led to four unearned runs, expanding Boston's lead from 5-0 to 9-0. Key stat Washington has allowed at least 10 runs in consecutive games for the first time since April 13-14. Up next Boston LHP Garrett Crochet (8-4, 2.34 ERA) starts Sunday's series finale. Washington has not announced its pitching plans. ___ AP MLB: recommended
