Israel to send delegation to Qatar for Gaza ceasefire, hostage deal talks

India Today15 hours ago
Israel has decided to send a delegation to Qatar on Sunday to discuss a potential ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza, an Israeli official confirmed, raising hopes for progress in ending the nearly 21-month war. Hamas said it responded 'in a positive spirit' to a US-backed proposal that includes a 60-day truce, following comments from US President Donald Trump that Israel had agreed to the necessary conditions.advertisementDespite this, significant hurdles remain. A Palestinian official aligned with Hamas cited unresolved issues, including humanitarian aid, control of the Rafah crossing, and the timeline for Israeli troop withdrawal. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, expected to meet Trump in Washington on Monday, has not publicly addressed the ceasefire proposal and continues to insist on Hamas' disarmament—something the group rejects.
The conflict was reignited by Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack that killed around 1,200 Israelis and resulted in 251 hostages. Israel's military response has killed over 57,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry, and displaced nearly the entire population, sparking global outcry and allegations of war crimes, which Israel denies.- EndsMust Watch

Mediators tell Hamas new Gaza talks to begin in Doha

International mediators trying to broker a ceasefire to end the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza have informed the Palestinian group that talks will resume on Sunday, a Palestinian official said. Hamas is seeking increased humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip and assurances for a lasting end to the conflict.(REUTERS) "Mediators informed Hamas that a new round of indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel will begin in Doha today, Sunday," the official, who is familiar with the talks and close to Hamas, told AFP. The official said the Hamas delegation, led by its top negotiator Kahlil al-Hayya, was already in the Qatari capital. The renewed talks are expected to focus on the conditions for a potential ceasefire agreement, with particular attention to the details of a possible hostage release in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Hamas is also seeking increased humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip and assurances for a lasting end to the conflict. Two Palestinian sources close to the discussions said the latest US-backed proposal included a 60-day truce, during which Hamas would release 10 living hostages and several bodies in exchange for Palestinians detained by Israel. On Friday, Hamas said it was ready "to engage immediately and seriously" in negotiations, and that it had submitted its response to the proposal, without offering any details. On Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that "the changes that Hamas is seeking to make in the Qatari proposal... are unacceptable to Israel". Netanyahu however ordered negotiators to head to Doha to discuss "the Qatari proposal that Israel has agreed to", the statement from his office said, later adding the delegation would travel on Sunday.

Israel to send delegation for indirect talks with Hamas

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed a negotiating team to travel to Qatar on Sunday for talks with Hamas on a ceasefire-hostages deal, the Israeli Prime Minister's Office said in a statement. After assessing the situation, Israel accepted the invitation for close talks and continued negotiations for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza based on the Qatari proposal that Israel agreed to, according to the statement. The proposal reportedly includes a 60-day ceasefire, the release, in five stages, of 10 Israeli live hostages, and the handover of 18 hostage bodies, as well as the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. Meanwhile, the statement said that Israel was informed on Saturday evening that Hamas demanded changes to the proposal, which are "unacceptable to Israel." Israel's state-owned Kan TV News reported that the changes demanded by Hamas concern guarantees regarding a quick transition to negotiations to end the war, the inclusion of Türkiye among the guarantor countries of the agreement, and details related to the distribution of humanitarian aid and the withdrawal of Israeli military forces from the Gaza Strip. On Friday, Hamas said in a statement that it has delivered a "positive" response to mediators over a Gaza ceasefire proposal, adding it is "seriously prepared to immediately enter into a round of negotiations on the mechanism for implementing this framework." On Saturday, according to a source familiar with the matter, a Hamas member close to the movement's leadership, Hamas proposed minor changes to the existing draft, but did not deviate significantly from the core elements of the mediation framework, Xinhua news agency reported. Regarding humanitarian assistance, the source said Hamas emphasized that "aid must be delivered in sufficient quantities to ensure the uninterrupted operation of bakeries, hospitals, and essential services." "Hamas insists that humanitarian aid be brought in through neutral and internationally recognized organizations, including the United Nations, the Red Crescent, and other relevant agencies," the source added. Regarding the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the source said that "Hamas does not oppose slight adjustments to the proposed withdrawal to the March 2 lines, provided the details are clarified through indirect negotiations."
