Norris leads McLaren practice one-two after Dunne shines
SPIELBERG, Austria - Lando Norris led Formula One leader Oscar Piastri in a McLaren one-two in second practice for the Austrian Grand Prix on Friday after George Russell went fastest for Mercedes in the opening session.
Norris had handed his car to Alex Dunne for an impressive F1 practice debut for the Irish rookie and Formula Two leader, but the Briton was right up to speed as soon as he got back behind the wheel.
After Russell's best of one minute 05.542 seconds in the early afternoon, Norris -- 22 points behind Piastri in the title battle after 10 of 24 races -- lapped in 1:04.580 with Piastri 0.157 slower.
Red Bull's reigning champion Max Verstappen, a five-times winner at his team's home circuit, was the only other driver under the five second mark with a 1:04.898.
Russell, winner from pole position in Canada two weeks ago after the McLarens collided, was sixth in practice two with Lance Stroll a surprise fourth for Aston Martin and Charles Leclerc fifth for Ferrari.
Verstappen was without regular race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase for the weekend due to personal reasons with Simon Rennie taking over.
Dunne, given track time as part of team obligations to give rookie drivers F1 experience, was the talk of the first session when he lapped fourth fastest and only 0.069 slower than Piastri.
Still only 19 and the first Irish driver in 22 years to take part in a grand prix weekend, he thanked the team over the radio as the chequered flag fell.
"A little boy's dream came true, and this is definitely the best day of my life," he said. "Thank you everyone for letting me do this, and thanks to Lando as well for trusting me with his car."
McLaren team boss Andrea Stella cautioned not to read too much into the time, however.
"Alex has been quite diligent and impressive, and then he also had the chance to show some speed and, no surprise, he is a fast driver," said the Italian.
"I think we need to be a bit careful looking at the lap times, because his came later on in the stint when the fuel was down. But I think encouraging and impressive in terms of Alex himself, and also I think a good session for McLaren."
Austria has the shortest lap of the year in terms of time and all but 20th-placed Haas driver Oliver Bearman were within a second of Russell in the opening session.
Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton was ninth and 10th respectively in the sessions as Ferrari made a difficult start to their preparations with mechanics working on both cars during practice one.
Hamilton was also warned for impeding Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli.
"I didn't see Antonelli," he said over the radio after the Italian went wide to avoid a collision.
Leclerc sat out that session with Swedish reserve Dino Beganovic getting some track time and finishing 18th.

Norris led every phase, going fastest in Friday and Saturday practice, a decisive response to a poor qualifying in Canada and his collision with championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri in that race two weeks ago. That incident, which he accepted blame for, left Norris 22 points behind Piastri. "Even in Canada, after reviewing the weekend with Lando and his engineers, we always said the speed was there," Stella told Sky Sports television. "When he had the little contact with the wall in qualifying, he was on track for a pole position. And in the race, he was one of the fastest, if not the fastest car. The speed was always there. We needed to polish the execution. "I'm really proud of Lando today. Not only he scored a pole position, but it's a dominant pole position, a pretty remarkable lap time." Norris was more than half a second faster than his closest rival, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, on the shortest lap of the season. The Briton said the upgraded car felt strong and quick. Qualifying, a strong point last year, has become more of a problem this season, but Norris seemed to have rectified some of the issues. "It was easily my best qualifying of the year from a delivery point of view from every single lap I did. I still made a couple of mistakes here and there, but none that cost me a lap or anything," he said. "I think on deliveries, consistency and of course putting it in when it counts in Q3 (it) was easily the best lap I've done for this whole season, probably even better than Monaco, honestly. "Maybe not as exciting a lap as Monaco, but definitely a better put-together lap than I did there." Norris won from pole in Monaco, with the fastest lap, as he did in the Australian season-opener. "It shows that the feelings I've been requiring, the feelings that I've not been getting as easily, when they are more my way and more where I want them to be, I can put in better performances and have days like today," he said.

Sherry on top after first Group 1 win
Irish jockeys and their heavily accented brogue have been swooping down thick and fast on Australian Group 1s, with Tom Sherry the latest to join the elite band on June 28. After that unmistakable lilt from The Curragh to Tipperary was first heard at country and hurdle meetings around Victoria and South Australia in the last decade or so, the proverbial luck of the Irish has not taken long to spread to the more urbanised marquee events. From Johnny Allen, Declan Bates, Robbie Dolan to Martin Harley just recently in the J.J. Atkins, they were often hard to understand at post-race interviews, but they certainly let their riding do the talking at Group 1 level. Sherry's turn to enjoy the "craic" came after "an absolute peach" - as winning trainer Peter Snowden said - on third-favourite ($34) Tashi to claim the last Group 1 on the Australian racing calendar, the A$700,000 (S$584,000) Tattersall's Tiara (1,400m) at Eagle Farm. Melbourne Cup-winning Dolan's backstory as a "The Voice" contestant before he won the race all Australian jockeys dream of was cool, but Sherry's is no less compelling. Sherry landed in Australia in 2018 with not just his saddle and boots as baggage. He was jobless, having lost his licence in Ireland from a four-year suspension - later reduced - for a positive to cocaine. With his heart not in race-riding any more, Sherry was happy to just turn track rider Down Under. But, after now Hong Kong-based trainer Mark Newnham took him in, a pep talk led to a Sydney champion apprentice title in 2021, one Group 2 and a clutch of Group 3 wins - and now a Group 1 gong. "It's been a long road, it's been tough, but moments like this make it all worthwhile," said Sherry, 26. "Winning a Group 1 for a lad from Ireland is a very big deal for me. I came here with 80 rides, rode 100 winners in my first season in Australia, all thanks to Mark. "The stars aligned today, and I can't thank Peter enough." A recipient of a 50th Group 1 accolade himself, Snowden was, however, not thinking for himself. "It's Tom's first Group 1, he rode her an absolute peach.
