Baguio feted 2025 Bloomberg Philanthropies Award for tobacco control

GMA Network25-06-2025
Baguio City has been bestowed the 2025 Bloomberg Philanthropies Award for Global Tobacco Control in recognition of its efforts to control tobacco use and protect public health.
Joining Baguio City in this year's list of honorees are the Ukraine Committee on Public Health; the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India; the Ministry of Health and Wellness in Mauritius; the Mexico and Salud Justa Mx, Ministry of Health as joint awardees; and the Ministry of Finance in Montenegro.
According to the Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards 2025 website, the annual recognitions celebrate the significant strides governments and non-governmental organizations have made in adopting and implementing best-practice tobacco control policies.
Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong accepted the award during the World Conference on Tobacco Control in Dublin, Ireland on June 23, 2025.
"The City of Baguio humbly and honorably accepts this recognition as a Global Tobacco Control Champion… This honor reflects our unwavering commitment to protecting public health through evidence-based policies and strong partnerships. Together, we have created a community-driven surveillance and education model that upholds every citizen's right to breathe clean air," Magalong said.
"As we gather with global leaders in Dublin, we reaffirm our dedication to a tobacco-free future—not only for Baguio, but for all cities working toward health, equity, and sustainable development," he added.
In a statement, the Baguio City government said the recognition highlighted its collaborations with medical schools and a public-private monitoring model tracking tobacco use.
"The global tobacco control movement is helping save millions of lives and stands as one of the most successful public health efforts in history... This year's award winners demonstrate the real progress that can be achieved when evidence-based policies are implemented and enforced," Bloomberg L.P. and Bloomberg Philanthropies founder Michael Bloomberg was quoted by the city government as saying.
"Tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable death, claiming more than seven million lives each year, primarily in low- and middle-income countries. Despite a global decline in smoking—from 22.8 percent in 2007 to 16.4 percent in 2023—over one billion people worldwide continue to smoke, as the tobacco industry invests billions in marketing, often targeting youth," Bloomberg was also quoted as saying.
Baguio City was also a recipient of the Healthy Cities Award from the World Health Organization (WHO) under the category of "Sharing Clean Air: Committed to multi-sectoral implementation of smoke-free laws" in 2021. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Farmer Brothers Coffee to weigh 'strategic' options

US-based Farmer Brothers Coffee has started a process to explore 'strategic' options focused on 'maximising' shareholder value. In a statement released on 21 July, the owner of Farmer Brothers, Boyd's Coffee, and SUM>ONE Coffee Roasters brands said that in the last two years, it has made 'significant progress in transforming its operations and improving its business performance'. Farmer Brothers, founded in 1912, sold assets worth approximately $100m to TreeHouse Foods in June 2023. David Pace, chairman of the company's board, said, since the 2023 sale, the group focused on 'improving' financial and operational structure. 'We believe now is the right time to explore additional options that could allow us to more effectively maximise shareholder value,' Pace added. As part of the review, the company's board has established a strategy committee comprising independent directors to assess a wide range of 'strategic' options. The committee will provide recommendations to the full board. To assist in this process, Farmer Brothers has engaged North Point Mergers and Acquisitions as its financial advisor and Winston & Strawn as its legal counsel. Farmer Brothers said its board has not set a specific timeline for the review process, and there is no guarantee that it will result in any transaction or strategic outcome. The company added it will not disclose further developments regarding the review until it deems it necessary. In the nine months ending 31 March 2025, Farmer Brothers reported net sales of $257.1m, a marginal increase from $256.6m in the same period the previous year. However, the company recorded a net loss of $9.7m, compared to a profit of $717,000 in the prior year. In a statement accompanying the results on 8 May, Farmer Brothers president and CEO John Moore said the team continues to do the work to 'streamline operations, increase efficiencies and better manage our overall cost structure as we proactively work to navigate this challenging market environment'. Farmer Brothers' customer base includes small independent eateries and foodservice providers, as well as major institutional purchasers such as restaurant chains, department stores, and hotels. Additionally, the company caters to grocery chains with private label coffee, consumer-branded coffee and tea products, and foodservice distributors. "Farmer Brothers Coffee to weigh 'strategic' options " was originally created and published by Just Drinks, a GlobalData owned brand. 4 Clever (and Less Risky) Ways To Use AI for Investing

From stock bots to ChatGPT prompts, artificial intelligence (AI) is not only here to stay, but it's making its way into aspects of people's lives where it once might have seemed impossible: investing. While you probably shouldn't fire your broker or let AI make all of your investing decisions, there are some good uses for it. Find Out: Read Next: AI is especially useful if you think of it as a tool to support and supplement your investments but not to replace professional advice or other practical expertise. Here are four ways to use AI for investing that are not only useful but actually quite smart. Use AI To Automate Your Portfolio Automated, AI-driven online advisors ('robo-advisors') may not be able to give you a nuanced overview of your specific portfolio, but they can help you make some basic decisions including how to generally allocate assets, how to rebalance a portfolio or how to minimize your tax impact. From Fidelity Go to Betterment, there are many finance-based robo-advisors available to set you up with information that can help you assess and even automate aspects of your portfolio. You don't, however, want to make any big changes without first running them by a financial professional. Learn More: Use for Investing Research, but Always Fact Check One of the best uses of AI in investing is to help educate yourself, whether to define terms (dollar-cost averaging, anyone?), understand general market trends ('What's a bull market?') or summarize lengthy financial information (a company's earnings call). Tools like Morningstar's Mo or offer AI-generated answers to users' financial questions. Grounding yourself in financial terms is a great starting point for becoming a smarter investment. However, always fact check information you get from AI before you use it in any significant way. It's one thing to toss around a new investing term you learned at a party, another thing to reallocate your portfolio because AI told you to. Use To Spot Trends, but Not Predict the Future AI is a pattern-finding and analyzing dynamo, able to process millions of data points and detect trends at amazing speeds that humans might miss. However, picking out trends does not mean it can predict the future. In fact, it's notoriously bad at this, because it turns out that being able to pick a hot stock is a uniquely human trait, borne of things like instinct and experience and history as well as the trends and patterns that AI can find. This lends itself best to long-term investing strategies versus day-trading hype. Use for Risk Management One of the smartest ways to use AI in your investing strategy is for risk management, making sure you're not over-concentrated in one asset, especially a risky one. AI can take a high-level overview of your portfolio and flag potential red flags that you can either solve on your own or seek a professional's help with. Additionally, you can use AI to track your investments against market conditions to help you resist emotional decision-making — like chasing trends or holding on to underperforming assets too long. It can help you become a more strategic investor. Avoid AI Investing Mistakes You can't call your friends a tool — it's an insult — but AI won't be offended, because it is a tool. A helpful tool to fill in when you don't have a finance professional at your fingertips. Don't blindly follow AI stock picks or investing bots. All AI gives incorrect or even made up (hallucinated) information at times. Think of AI as your investing assistant, one whose work still needs checking. While it won't replace a finance professional, it can assist you in your investing goals. UN chief urges tech sector to power data centers with renewables

By Valerie Volcovici WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.N. Secretary General António Guterres on Tuesday called on tech companies to power the build out of data centers with 100% renewable energy by 2030, even as the industry turns to gas and coal-fired power plants to meet surging demand. The secretary general made his case for why he believes energy-hungry data centers should lock in a future of clean energy, saying the transition to renewable energy is inevitable, even as some countries and companies still embrace fossil fuels. "The future is being built in the cloud," Guterres said in a speech at the United Nations' headquarters in New York. "It must be powered by the sun, the wind, and the promise of a better world." His appeal to technology companies comes a day before U.S. President Donald Trump unveils his administration's AI Action Plan, which is expected to contain a number of executive actions aimed at easing restrictions on land use and energy production to unleash artificial intelligence development. Trump has declared a national energy emergency to address the vast amounts of energy needed by data centers to power AI to compete with China and enable him to ease environmental restrictions to build more power plants fueled by gas, coal and nuclear. Top economic rivals, the U.S. and China, are locked in a technological arms race over who can dominate AI. At the same time, Trump has issued executive orders and signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that curtails the use of incentives for wind and solar energy, which dominate the queue of new power generation waiting to connect to the electric grid. Guterres also appealed to governments to ready new national climate plans to deliver the goals of the Paris climate agreement by September that will lock-in a transition away from fossil fuels. He said this moment is an opportunity for governments to meet all new electricity demand with renewables and use water sustainably in cooling systems.
