MFT: Briana Shanae Reflects On Making Her First Gospel Song

Paras Griffin
For gospel rapper Briana Shanae, creating her first gospel song was a leap of faith she hadn't anticipated. Having spent years immersed in secular music, she relished the creative freedom it brought. However, everything changed when she released her own cover of GloRilla's chart-topping hit, 'TGIF.'
What began as a simple remix quickly turned into a source of controversy.

In this week's 'My First Time,' the artist some also know as Bri Trilla gives us some insight into the backlash from that cover, particularly the comments section for the post seen above that saw many questioning her values, motivations and even her faith. Amid the whirlwind of criticism though, she found herself confronting a deeper question: What kind of impact did she want her music to have? It soon became clear to her that while music had always been her outlet, she now longed to create something rooted in hope, healing and purpose. That inspiration eventually led to the creation of her very first gospel track, 'God Did It.'
Writing 'God Did It' wasn't without challenges. The shift pushed Briana to face her own doubts and insecurities. She wondered if listeners would accept her change in direction or if she was ready to break from others' expectations. Still, as she poured herself into the song, Briana found a peace she hadn't felt in a long time. For Briana Shanae, making music was no longer just about self-expression—it was about honoring her faith and sharing something greater with the world. With 'God Did It,' she truly began to discover her voice, no longer afraid of the noise and ready to amplify her purpose. Watch Briana Shanae aka Bri Trilla below as she breaks down making the transition from secular music to gospel in this week's 'My First Time':

GloRilla continues Yo Gotti tradition with Glo Bash: What's planned for Memphis concert?

In what is expected to be the concert event of the summer in Memphis, hometown hip-hop hero GloRilla will headline a show at FedExForum on July 25. The rap star is hosting the first Glo Bash, a mid-summer concert at the Downtown venue, which will take place just ahead of the rapper's 26th birthday on July 28. GloRilla — who is signed to Memphis rap veteran Yo Gotti's CMG label — looks to create her own tradition in the spirit of Yo Gotti's famous Birthday Bash concerts, held between 2013 and 2022. Here's what you should know ahead of Glo Bash. GloRilla's momentum continues After a breakout year in 2024, GloRilla continued to see her star shine in 2025. In January, GloRilla made her debut as part of the 50th anniversary season of NBC late-night comedy show 'Saturday Night Live.' In addition to performing a pair of songs on the show, Glo made a guest appearance in the show's final filmed sketch alongside host Dave Chappelle. A couple weeks later, GloRilla attended to the 67th annual Grammy awards in Los Angeles where she was nominated in two categories — but unfortunately lost out for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for her track "Yeah Glo!" (which has been certified a two-times platinum hit by the Recording Industry Association of America). In March, GloRilla headlined her first national tour, playing some 20 dates across the country, as well as making high-profile appearances at the Coachella Music Festival in California. Then in June, GloRilla — who was born Gloria Hallelujah Woods — had a shocking triumph, winning the Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award at the BET Awards. She was recognized for her gospel music collaboration with Kirk Franklin, Maverick City Music and Kierra Sheard on the track 'Rain Down on Me.' Also in June, she scored a huge international hit, as part of a collaboration with BTS member J-Hope. The South Korean boy band superstar's latest solo track, 'Killin' It Girl,' features a guest verse from GloRilla. The song quickly became a bona fide hit on the global charts — 'Killin' It Girl ' debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's Global Excl. U.S. and No. 3 on the Global 200 — with 55.1 million streams and 43,000 copies sold worldwide. On the U.S. charts, the song made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 in its first week of release, cracking the top 40. Continuing a Memphis hip-hop tradition GLORILLA IN MEMPHIS: GloRilla makes surprise appearance at Memphis high school, donates $25,000 for media center Announced in April, the first of what looks to be an annual Glo Bash concert certainly fills a void in Bluff City hip-hop. In a sense, Glo will be picking up the torch from her label head and mentor Yo Gotti, who staged a series of star-studded summer birthday concerts over a decade, moving the shows from the Orpheum to FedExForum in that time. The last Yo Gotti Birthday Bash concert came in 2022, as Gotti shifted focus from performing to running his entertainment empire. With the inaugural Glo Bash, that sense of summertime excitement returns with what's expected to be a triumphant celebration not just of GloRilla, but of CMG's continuing success, and an ongoing Memphis rap renaissance that has seen the city and its artists reaching a new peak of mainstream popularity. GloRilla's labelmates, collaborators and guest stars As with the old Yo Gotti Birthday Bash concerts, GloRilla will be topping a lineup that's expected to feature several other artists, including some of her CMG labelmates, as well previously announced and surprise guests — hence the "GloRilla & Friends" billing for the show. So far, in addition to Glo, two acts have been formally announced for the Glo Bash: Sexxy Red and BossMan Dlow. St. Louis rapper Sexxy Red teamed up with GloRilla on 2024's "Whatchu Kno About Me,' which was a platinum-selling Top 20 pop hit and reached No. 3 on the Billboard rap charts. Florida trap rapper BossMan Dlow is another hit GloRilla collaborator. The pair worked together on 2023's 'Finesse,' which became a Top 40 hit on its way to gold certification. Over the course of her career, GloRilla has worked with everyone from Megan Thee Stallion to Cardi B to Tyler, The Creator, so there could be a chance — however small — that some big names could turn up for the concert. Are tickets still available for GloRilla's Glo Bash in Memphis? As of this writing, there are still plenty of tickets available for the first Glo Bash, with prices starting at $77 and going up to $400-plus. A quick scan of the available options shows that the cheapest seats — those that range from $77 to $96 — will put you in the upper level 200 section of FedExForum. Tickets in the $200 to $300 price range will put you in the lower bowl sections of the 100 level of the arena. Meanwhile, a relative handful of floor seats remain priced between $290 to $347, depending on your proximity to the stage. The best seats, tagged as Platinum level tickets, can be found in the front section, about 10 rows back of the stage. Those will cost $454. As always, ticket availability is fluid and Memphis is, historically, a heavily late-buying market. Still, fans would be well advised to purchase sooner rather than later, as the show is expected to sell out. GloRilla to headline WNBA All-Star Game's halftime show and bring some 'BIG GLO energy'

Memphis rap star GloRilla will provide the entertainment at the 2025 AT&T WNBA All-Star Game. On July 16, the WNBA announced that three-time Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum hip-hop artist GloRilla would headline the halftime performance during the All-Star game. Boston rapper BIA will also take part, performing prior to the game's tip-off. The WNBA All-Star Game will take place at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis at 7:30 p.m. July 19. It will air live on ABC, Disney+ and ESPN+. Both BIA's pre-game and GloRilla's halftime performance will be part of the ABC broadcast. 'You know I'm always going to represent for the ladies and I'm excited to bring that BIG GLO energy to the WNBA All-Star stage,' GloRilla said in a statement announcing her appearance. 'This one is for the women and athletes who go hard every single day.' In 2024 she released four hit songs including "Yeah Glo!" and "TGIF' and earned the title of Hottest Female Rapper from Billboard. Earlier this year, GloRilla was honored with the Powerhouse Award at Billboard's Women in Music gala, notched a surprise win in the gospel category at the BET Awards, and made high-profile appearances on NBC's 'Saturday Night Live,' and at the Coachella Music Festival in California. 'Let Her Cook': 5 songs we want to hear from GloRilla in Memphis

Memphis' own GloRilla is still set to host her inaugural Glo Bash on July 25, despite her recent arrest on felony drug charges in Georgia earlier this week. The incident occurred when police responded to her residence on July 19 as three individuals were attempting to burglarize her home, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office. The rapper was out of town to perform at the WNBA All-Star Game, but deputies reportedly found "a significant amount of marijuana." Three days later, she turned herself in to the police and was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of a "schedule one" controlled substance. Despite the chaos that ensued, she will put on a show — as scheduled — for her hometown, and many people are excited for her performance. FedExForum will be jampacked with fans rapping and dancing along to some of her hottest hits. Many people are speculating what other artists will be performing with her. Others are wondering what songs will be on the setlist. Will she start off hot with her new single "Typa" or will she start with the song that put her on the map, "F.N.F. (Let's Go)?" There's so many songs in her catalog to choose from, but here are five songs we'd love to hear before she leaves the Forum: 'TGIF' This song is the embodiment of a "hot girl summer." The lyrics resonate with every woman who is single, flirty and looking to have some fun. "It's seven p.m. Friday, it's 95 degrees..." you know the rest. If she performs this summer anthem, it'll definitely turn the crowd all the way up. 'Tomorrow 2' You couldn't go anywhere in 2022 without hearing this song. From the second you hear the opening beat, you're ready to rap along bar for bar. The song is a vibe in itself but when you add the remix with Cardi B, immediately yes. This the kind of song that GloRilla won't have to rap, the crowd can do it for her. 'Yeah Glo!' This song is an absolute must. This is GloRilla's own motivational song but it hypes everyone else up in the process. This song could make anyone feel like they're "that girl" and can do anything. The "Yeah Glo!" ad libs just adds a layer of confidence to this fun, inviting song. 'WHATCHU KNO ABOUT ME' The energy in FedExForum will be unmatched if GloRilla performs this certified hit. It's only right that she performs this song in her hometown with her fellow Memphians in the audience. One could envision how the crowd will shout "Big G-L-O in that G-L-E" at the top of their lungs. 'LET HER COOK' This song is another one of her hits that must be performed. Similar to "Yeah Glo," this song is another motivational bop that will keep the crowd moving. Are there still tickets for GloRilla's Glo Bash in Memphis? Yes! Some tickets are still available starting at $77 and up to $400-plus.
