French side an unknown quantity

They will hardly be easy-beats but there is no doubt the French team to play the All Blacks in Dunedin next week will be an unknown quantity.
Just as well there will still be plenty of star names in the team in black.
France coach Fabien Galthie yesterday named 17 uncapped players in his squad for the looming three-test series in New Zealand.
The likelihood of the tourists bringing a depleted squad to these shores had been well forecast.
Star halfback Antoine Dupont is injured, rampaging No 8 Gregory Alldritt and classy prop Jean-Baptiste Gros are rested, and the likes of Romain Ntamack, Thomas Ramos, Louis Bielle-Biarrey, Thibaud Flament and Damian Penaud are involved in the Top 14 final this weekend between Toulouse and Bordeaux.
Galthie is allowed to select five players from that final, but they will only be available for the second and third tests against the All Blacks.

Racing 92 centre Gael Fickou, who has 94 test caps, will captain France in the Forsyth Barr Stadium test.
Veteran forwards Rabah Slimani and Romain Taofifenua are the only other players in the initial squad with significant experience.
Versatile forward Cameron Woki has been cleared to play after the red card he copped while playing for a French XV at Twickenham last weekend was rescinded.
An interesting newcomer is lock Jacobus van Tonder.
He was a South African representative at schools level before moving to France to pursue a professional career.
Uncapped hooker Guillaume Marchand is the younger brother of French and Toulouse hooker Julien Marchand.

The season opens this Saturday in front of a sold out Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, and while the expectation is that he will name an experienced side on Thursday, all six new players will see the field in the next three weeks. "That's the art of it isn't it? You know, like, you want to give everyone a possible go," said Robertson in Auckland when asked about how he will manage his squad. "I've said look there's my plan to you know but we don't want to be held…on it because things do happen. But the goal is to play everyone, and you want to get some combinations, cohesion. That is our advantage at the moment. If we if we make it that way with guys that have played footy together, and then you get the balance of how many changes over the series." The injury will keep him sidelined for six to eight weeks, a big blow for the powerful All Black front row rotation. Williams injured the knee against the Reds in the Crusaders' play-off match against the Reds, however returned to play in the final a fortnight later. "It's tough, you know, he's obviously been in great form. But he'll rehab quickly and he's in good hands," said Robertson. The All Black coach stopped short of addressing whether or not Williams should have played the final, which the Crusaders won 19-12 over the Chiefs. "Well he played and we're here right now. They have lost to the French three times in a row over the last four years and haven't beaten them since 2018. "One thing with the French is they've got depth. (Coach Fabien Galthié)'s created depth previously over the last six years that he's had the squad. All those young, exciting players that've come through, French rugby's in good stead, in a good position." Robertson is expecting a tough battle when the series begins. "This is when they're probably at the most dangerous, when they're underestimated, aren't they? It's quite nice that (the media) tell the story, that they're depleted and all that, and then they get their backs up and then we get a ferocious French team."

All Blacks' Tamaiti Williams ruled out after meniscus tear injury

Williams, who plays for the champion Crusaders, pulled up with a painful knee following the Super Rugby final and scans revealed the tear. Assessment by a surgeon on Monday morning confirmed surgery would be required. Williams is the second All Blacks forward to miss the series, which begins on Saturday in Dunedin, through injury. Loose forward Wallace Sititi has been ruled out with an ankle injury and replaced by Christian Lio-Willie. Coach Scott Robertson has called George Bower into the squad to replace Williams. Twenty-two test cap All Black Bower has not played for New Zealand since late 2022, leading many to speculate that he would make a switch of national allegiance to Fiji. However, in April Bower extended his stay in New Zealand rugby signing on until 2027.
