KDEBWM targets 80% Euro-5 lorry use by year-end

The Sun29-04-2025
KLANG: KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) is targeting 80 per cent use of environmentally friendly Euro 5-spec roll-on-roll-off (RORO) trucks for cleaning operations in Selangor by the end of this year.
KDEBWM managing director Datuk Ramli Mohd Tahir said the company was set to receive 47 vehicles next month, with operations to begin immediately in areas under the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) and several other local authorities (PBT).
'So far, we have received six Euro 5 RORO lorries, and the remaining units are expected to arrive next month.
'Generally, asset assessments are carried out every five to six years, and based on current developments, KDEBWM has decided that this model is the most suitable,' he told reporters after the handover ceremony of the first batch of Fuso trucks here today.
Ramli said the use of the model helped minimise nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon emissions, provided efficient fuel consumption without compromising engine performance, and added value to cleaning operations in Selangor.
He said KDEBWM was operating with 1,400 units of machinery, including RORO and compactor lorries, and that the company remained committed to promoting greener operations in line with the government's goal of making Malaysia a carbon-neutral country by 2050.
'We hope that with the conversion to this new model chassis, we can reduce at least 30 to 40 per cent of the carbon dioxide emitted by the old chassis,' he said.
Previously, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad was reported as saying that Malaysia would begin implementing the use of Euro 5 petrol in September 2025, with full compliance expected by 2027, as a long-term measure to preserve the country's air quality.

India's forex reserves drop by $1.18 bn to $695.49 bn, third consecutive weekly decline

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 27 (ANI): India's foreign exchange reserves fell by USD 1.18 billion to USD 695.49 billion for the week ending July 18, marking the third straight week of decline, according to the official data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In the previous reporting week, the country's foreign exchange reserves fell by USD 3.06 billion to USD 696.67 billion. In the week ending July 18, foreign currency assets, the major constituent of the forex reserves, fell by USD 1.201 billion to USD 587.609 billion, possibly becoming the primary reason for the decline in the forex reserves. The Gold reserves, another major component of the forex, again witnessed an impressive recovery from last week's decline, increasing by USD 150 million to USD 84.499 billion, following the previous week's fall of USD 498 million. India's Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) with the global financial body, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), witnessed another dip of USD 119 million, reaching USD 18.683 billion. Central banks worldwide are increasingly accumulating safe-haven gold in their foreign exchange reserves kitty, and India is no exception. The share of gold maintained by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its foreign exchange reserves has almost doubled since 2021, till recently. In 2023, India added around USD 58 billion to its foreign exchange reserves, contrasting with a cumulative decline of USD 71 billion in 2022. In 2024, the reserves rose by a little over USD 20 billion, touching an all-time high of USD 704.885 billion at the end of September 2024. India's foreign exchange reserves (Forex) are sufficient to meet 11 months of the country's imports and about 96 per cent of external debt, said Governor Sanjay Malhotra while announcing the outcome of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decisions. Foreign exchange reserves, or FX reserves, are assets held by a nation's central bank or monetary authority, primarily in reserve currencies such as the US Dollar, with smaller portions in the Euro, Japanese Yen, and Pound Sterling. The RBI often intervenes by managing liquidity, including selling dollars, to prevent steep Rupee depreciation. The RBI strategically buys dollars when the Rupee is strong and sells when it weakens. Changes in govt hasn't boosted Bumiputera middle class, says Rafizi

The statistics department recently said the Bumiputera community is expected to grow from 69.4% in 2020 to 79.4% in 2060, while the Chinese and Indian communities are projected to decline to 14.8% and 4.7%, respectively. PETALING JAYA : Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli says successive changes in government have failed to improve the productivity of the Bumiputera middle class, a key issue he believes lies at the heart of Malay insecurity. Speaking on the latest episode of the Yang Berhenti Menteri podcast, the Pandan MP said boosting Bumiputera participation and performance in the economy was crucial not only for long-term development, but also for bridging racial divides and achieving political stability. 'We've had many changes in government, but we still haven't managed to energise the Bumiputera middle class to be as productive and dynamic as the Chinese middle class,' he said. 'If we can close that gap, we'll reduce economic insecurity. And when you reduce that insecurity, Malays will stop saying things like 'habis la kita' (we're doomed).' Rafizi said Malaysia's political polarisation is deeply tied to economic disparities, especially among ethnic groups. 'When we talk about the economy, population breakdown matters — because that's your market. 'As the Bumiputera population grows, their role in strengthening the economy becomes more important,' he said. He said this was the rationale behind the Bumiputera Economic Transformation Plan 2035 (Putera35), which was designed to improve Bumiputera participation in the economy without sidelining other communities. Rafizi stressed that the initiative was not about increasing entitlement or promoting ethnic quotas, such as insisting all CEOs must be Malay. Instead, he said Putera35 was meant to create policies that are fair, sustainable and result-oriented. He added that closing the economic gap was a more effective path to political stability than relying on campaign speeches before general elections. Earlier this month, the statistics department said Malaysia's population is projected to peak at 42.38 million in 2059 before gradually declining. The Bumiputera community is expected to grow from 69.4% in 2020 to 79.4% in 2060, while the Chinese and Indian communities are projected to decline to 14.8% and 4.7%, respectively.

Elevated Volatility Anticipated For USD, MYR Pair

The Malaysian ringgit has displayed unexpected strength this week, hovering around the 4.22-4.23 mark against the US dollar as the Dollar Index (DXY) slipped below 98.0. This performance comes amidst shifting global currency dynamics and anticipation surrounding crucial trade negotiations. The US dollar faced downward pressure early in the week without a clear immediate catalyst. However, a stronger Euro, bolstered by defensive reallocations ahead of the August 1 deadline for potential US-EU tariffs, appears to have driven the greenback's weakness. Markets seem to be favoring the Euro in light of these trade uncertainties. Concurrently, the Japanese Yen also gained ground following a newly inked US-Japan trade agreement, further contributing to the US dollar's softening. These movements provided a tailwind for risk assets, prompting a rotation of investments from the US into emerging markets. From a data perspective, the US labour market remains firm, contrasting with emerging signs of weakness in housing data. Ahead of the Federal Reserve's upcoming policy decision – where a no-change in interest rates is widely expected – market attention will be fixed on key economic reports. These include the JOLTS (Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey) report, ADP private sector jobs data, and the advance Q2 2025 GDP reading. A string of positive surprises from these indicators could reignite hawkish Federal Reserve expectations, potentially strengthening the US dollar. The outcome of the US-EU tariff deal, along with other pending negotiations, will also be closely watched in the run-up to Friday's deadline. Outlook for the Ringgit Kenanga Research indicates that softer US data will be necessary to support their call for a September Fed rate cut. For now, the consensus points towards a resilient US economy. A favorable US-EU trade deal is expected to further support the Euro and overall risk sentiment globally. For the Malaysian ringgit, a significant near-term risk remains the ongoing trade talks with the US. As Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz recently confirmed, negotiations are intensifying to reduce an impending 25% US import tariff to below 20% before the August 1 deadline. A 'no-deal' outcome from these discussions could exert considerable downward pressure on the ringgit. Given the data-heavy week and the politically sensitive trade negotiations, currency analysts expect elevated volatility for the USD/MYR pair, anticipating it to trade within the 4.20–4.25 range. Technically, the USD/MYR is currently anchored near its 5-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) at 4.23, with immediate support at 4.22 and resistance at 4.23. Related
