On Thursday evening, Liverpool themselves posted a lengthy homage to the late attacker, describing him as a "truly clutch figure" before announcing they would "immortalise" his No20 shirt number.
The club's statement, which recounted his career with the Anfield outfit said: "'He will take us to victory,' sang the Liverpool fans in his honour – and Diogo Jota so often did exactly that.
"The Portugal forward, who has tragically passed away in a road traffic accident at the age of 28, was a truly clutch figure for the Reds, in just the right place when his team needed his finishing knack.
"He arrived at Anfield in September 2020, enhancing the new Premier League champions' attacking ranks by making the switch from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

"Jota's career had started out in his home country at Pacos de Ferreira and a senior debut in 2014 kicked off a rise to glory in the club and international game.
"Signed by Atletico Madrid in 2016, he would not actually appear for the Spanish side, instead enjoying a productive next campaign on loan at FC Porto, honing his scoring skills and gaining Champions League experience.

"Another loan, this time to Wolves, beckoned and Jota was a key protagonist in firing the Midlands outfit out of the Championship with 17 goals during 2017-18.
"Capable of playing across all attacking positions, his work-rate and nimbleness enabled him to foil defenders in all kinds of ways, and those talents were successfully transferred permanently to the Premier League.
"Back-to-back seventh-placed finishes for Wolves in England's top flight came alongside a run to the Europa League last eight in 2019-20 that saw Jota score nine times.
"Liverpool then swooped to recruit him and despite the unenviable challenge of forcing his way into a front line already composed of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, his impact was quick and considerable.
"Indeed, Jota reached double figures for goals by his 21st Reds appearance, a tally that included a scintillating hat-trick away at Atalanta in the Champions League.
"An untimely injury prevented him from continuing that start but he returned to clinical effect, racking up 21 strikes in all competitions as Jürgen Klopp's side almost achieved a quadruple in 2021-22, lifting the Carabao Cup and Emirates FA Cup.
"'The slotter' was vital to those triumphs, a brilliant cameo against Leicester City in the quarter-finals of the former followed with a tie-deciding double at Arsenal in the semi-finals, while there was an FA Cup winner in the last eight versus Nottingham Forest.
"Though fitness misfortunes prevented Jota from always being able to feature in the seasons that followed, he continued to tot up goals and assists for the cause, relied upon by Klopp and his successor, Arne Slot.
"A cool head on the pitch – just remember his 94th-minute Anfield decider against Tottenham Hotspur in April 2023 – and a respected and much-loved team-mate off it.
"What cruelly has proved to be his final flourish in football saw Jota become a Premier League champion and a UEFA Nations League winner.
"The No.20 will be rightly immortalised for his contributions as part of Liverpool's 2024-25 title-winners – the club's 20th – with his trademark shimmy and strike in front of the Kop to seal victory in April's Merseyside derby a poignant last goal of his life.
"To arrive at this particular season with the title that I've been chasing for a lot of years and in the best league in the world – for me where I dreamed to play as a kid – it's a moment I will cherish forever,' he said.
"It is a remarkable achievement for a small guy that came from Gondomar, where I had this dream. To arrive at this moment was outstanding.'
"More joy and special moments followed just last month as Portugal – Jota represented his country 49 times and 14 of his overall senior total of 150 goals came in internationals – lifted the Nations League trophy.
"And he then celebrated marriage to wife Rute, with whom he had three children, on June 22.
"'His name is Diogo,' rang the chorus of that very own supporter chant. And we'll never forget it. RIP Diogo Jota, 1996-2025."
Local priest Jose Manuel Macedo initially announced the ceremonies would take place at 4pm on Friday before confirming they had been rescheduled to Saturday morning.
Father Macedo said a wake would take place at Sao Cosme Chapel before the funeral mass on Saturday morning at the Catholic church next door - the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar.

Close family, friends and stars of the world of football will gather for the funeral of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in Spain. Mr Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 25, were killed on Thursday after their vehicle veered off a motorway and crashed, a week after the Portugal forward had gotten married. The funeral, which begins at 9am local time, is being held in his hometown of Gondomar, near Porto. The service will be conducted by the bishop of Porto, local media reported. Yesterday, hundreds attended a wake for the brothers. Among those who came to offer their condolences were a childhood friend, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, Mr Jota's agent Jorge Mendes and Porto club president Andre Villas-Boas. "Football is truly in mourning. Diogo was an icon of the talent Portuguese football represents," said football federation chief Pedro Proenca. 'Rest in peace' Mourners arrived carrying wreaths of flowers, some sobbing audibly, before the wake was opened to members of the public. The death of the Portugal international and his brother has triggered an outpouring of emotion in football, and beyond. Liverpool opened a book of condolences and lowered flags to half-mast, with dozens of supporters laying a sea of flowers, balloons, Mr Jota shirts, and scarves with the message "Rest in peace Diogo Jota", outside Anfield. Pedro Neves, who was friends with Mr Jota at school in Gondomar, said he "will remember him as someone who was very friendly, very courteous, who loved everyone, who always had a smile on his face". "He left us too young, it's not fair. But that's how life is sometimes," Mr Neves, 31, told AFP. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who brought Mr Jota to the Reds in 2020, has said he was "heartbroken" while the club spoke of an "unimaginable loss". Mr Klopp's successor at Anfield, Arne Slot, said everyone associated with the club owed it to Mr Jota to "stand together and be there for one another". Mr Jota was remembered at the Club World Cup in the United States, with a one-minute silence held at the quarter-final between Brazil's Fluminense and Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal in Orlando. Portuguese and UK media reported Mr Jota was driving to the northern Spanish port of Santander to take a ferry to England where Liverpool were due to start training, avoiding a flight on medical advice after a recent lung operation. Clare's Hehir drawing on experience ahead of Déise test
There may be a perception that Waterford have the advantage of more familiarity with Croke Park than Clare, ahead of today's Glen Dimplex All-Ireland quarter-final, but enough of the Banner crew have played at the Broadway of Gaelic games for it not to be an issue. Sinéad O'Keeffe, Niamh Mulqueen, Caoimhe Cahill, Jennifer Daly, Ellen Casey, Cliodhna Queally and Grace Carmody were among those to be involved when the juniors won the All-Ireland just two years ago. Last December, Truagh Clonlara were the first Clare team to reach an All-Ireland senior club final and while Sarsfields were too strong, it was an invaluable experience for Áine O'Loughlin, Róisín Begley and Michelle Powell in the context of today's outing. Clare Hehir's memories are from further back. Thirteen years ago. "Myself and Andrea O'Keefe would have played in a Féile final there when we were 14," Hehir reveals. "We played De La Salle of Waterford. So it's funny to be meeting them again." She doesn't recall a whole lot from it, but remembers a little redhead named Beth Carton, who she is likely to encounter at close quarters again at HQ later on today. Brianna O'Regan would probably have been involved too. Funny indeed, the way the big wheel keeps on turnin'. While there isn't the big unknown people might think, there remains an acknowledgement of what it means to play in the country's premier stadium, with all its history and tradition. And to do so on TV, as part of a double-header with an All-Ireland hurling semi-final between Cork and Dublin, even if it means tickets are scarce down the south west. And the importance of managing that. "It's not like no one has ever kind of touched the grass there before and that's a help. At the end of the day, it's the same as any other field in terms of dimensions, but it does hold that special place. So it's just about not letting the occasion get to you, as much as you do want to enjoy it as well, because not everyone gets to play there. You definitely want to enjoy it." The Déise are favourites, regulars in the knockout stages now for a number of years, while John Carmody started a major rebuild in Clare last season that involved introducing almost a full panel of youngsters. Hehir is the longest serving member of the squad along with O'Loughlin she reckons, with a decade served at senior level in the saffron and blue having been introduced to the squad in 2015. Clare's last quarter-final, against Cork in 2020, took place at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Apart from Hehir and O'Loughlin, Ciara Grogan is the only other survivor from the 20 that got on the pitch during that game in today's squad. Having been relegated from Division 1A of the Very League last year – when Hehir was absent after taking a year out to go travelling - Clare showed the benefit of that steep learning curve and the return of their defensive bedrock by reaching this year's 1B final, which they lost to Antrim. Getting to the last six of the Championship is another indication of their gradual improvement. "The League was good, a lot of girls got a lot of game time. You're facing into competitive matches every week, which is good. And you can see the experience from last year. Two championship wins was great. You saw a lot of girls stepping up to the plate who would be leaders on the team this year. "I think there was a lot of learnings from the League final. There would have been a lot of us who wouldn't make finals too often with Clare camogie. And I think maybe that occasion might have got to us, or we didn't turn up on the day. So that's something that we definitely want to rectify and we want to put in a good performance." The 27-year-old is a bit envious of the neophytes. "You look back on your first years on the panel, you're kind of so young – I don't know was it naïve – but you're just taking it game by game. But when you're playing a few years, you nearly think about it too much! Sometimes you'd want to go back to those days where you're playing for the fun of it. So you try and remind yourself that while you're there to play and to win, you want to enjoy it too. And we're trying to do that now, because you're not going to be there forever." Watching the Inagh-Kilnamona stalwart play, you don't get the impression that she is short on joie de vivre. She may be full-back more often than not, tasked with shackling the opposition sharpshooter, but the swashbuckler comes out every now and then and she tears up the field to grab a score. "In the last few years I've just kind of had it as part of my game. I don't know, maybe I do it too much these days, but if it's on, it's something I like to do. As long as the legs can keep moving forward. Tracking back afterwards is different!" Hehir's long-distance freetaking is a huge advantage also and overall, it adds to a package that has produced player of the match performances go leoir over the years, including in the vital first round Championship win over Wexford, that set them up to qualify for the last six. Much and all as she gets a great kick from landing a bomb, or supplying a decent ball to a forward, it is the challenge of going toe-to-toe with the elite of the sport that really gets the juices flowing. "Definitely. We pride ourselves on playing from the front, going out and attacking the game, as opposed to sitting back and kind of letting the forwards dictate the play. So as much as we can do that, we like to take on that challenge." That speaks to an environment of proactiveness, positivity and empowerment, which is a credit to Carmody. Sometimes it will go wrong, but the philosophy of not playing with fear has been at the root of the Clare resurgence. The draw gave them a chance of getting this far but no one would have said with any firm degree of confidence that it would be Clare over Limerick or Wexford to emerge. That they took care of business, albeit on score difference over their Shannonside neighbours, was significant. Now Waterford stand in their way of an All-Ireland semi-final. "It's probably a few years since I've played Waterford myself. We would have only watched on at their success over the last few years, getting to an All-Ireland final (in 2023). They really kind of pushed on and drove those standards, which is something that we can say we admire, but we definitely won't be sitting back and admiring them come Saturday. "Their improvement over the last few years is something that we would obviously have liked to have done ourselves, but I suppose this could be the day to start that."
