Mistral's CEO says reaching AGI will be 'a marketing move.' He uses this performance metric instead.
Artificial general intelligence, or AGI, is the AI industry's holy grail — but the CEO of a major AI startup has dismissed it as a "marketing move."
AGI is broadly used to describe a system that could perform any task that a human can.
Speaking during a fireside chat at London Tech Week on Tuesday, Arthur Mensch, CEO of French startup Mistral, said that AGI is "not super well defined."
"It's a moving target by definition," Mensch said. "We move from AI to AGI at some point, but that's a marketing move."
OpenAI's Sam Altman has said that AGI could come as soon as this year, while Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis predicts it'll arrive by 2030.
The Mistral CEO, known for his AGI scepticism, said that progress should instead be measured by looking at "the length of the agent execution," which means how long an AI agent can perform tasks before it runs into problems.
"The number of tasks that you can do within an enterprise, or as a user using generative AI systems, is definitely growing, and it's going to continue to grow," he said.
Mensch cofounded Mistral in 2023 with former DeepMind and Meta researchers. It has quickly become one of Europe's most prominent AI companies, often seen as the continent's answer to OpenAI.
The startup focuses on open-source AI models and has been scooping up talent from rival Meta, Business Insider previously reported.

Meta hires four more OpenAI researchers, The Information reports
(Reuters) -Meta Platforms is hiring four more OpenAI artificial intelligence researchers, The Information reported on Saturday. The researchers, Shengjia Zhao, Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi and Hongyu Ren have each agreed to join, the report said, citing a person familiar with their hiring. Earlier this week, the Instagram parent hired Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov and Xiaohua Zhai, who were all working in OpenAI's Zurich office, the Wall Street Journal reported. Meta and ChatGPT maker OpenAI did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The company has recently been pushing to hire more researchers from OpenAI to join chief executive Mark Zuckerberg's superintelligence efforts. Reuters could not immediately verify the report.

OpenAI Loses Four Key Researchers to Meta

He added that, 'none of our best people have decided to take them up on that.' A source at OpenAI confirmed the offers. Hongyu Ren was OpenAI's post-training lead for the o3 and o4 mini models, along with the open source model that's set to be released this summer, sources say. Post-training is the process of refining a model after it has been trained on a primary dataset. Shengjia Zhao is highly skilled in deep learning research, according to another source. He joined OpenAI in the summer of 2022, and helped build the startup's GPT-4 model. Jiahui Yu did a stint at Google DeepMind before joining OpenAI in late 2023. Shuchao Bi was a manager of OpenAI's multimodal models. The departures from OpenAI come shortly after the company lost three researchers from its Zurich office, the Wall Street Journal reported. President Donald Trump on Friday said he was 'terminating ALL discussions on Trade' with Canada over the country's new digital services tax that aims to collect billions of dollars from American tech giants like Meta and Amazon, starting on Monday. 'We have just been informed that Canada, a very difficult Country to TRADE with, including the fact that they have charged our Farmers as much as 400% Tariffs, for years, on Dairy Products, has just announced that they are putting a Digital Services Tax on our American Technology Companies, which is a direct and blatant attack on our Country,' Trump posted on Truth Social. The president then said he was canceling all trade discussions with America's northern neighbor due to the 'egregious Tax.' Canada's DST is a 3% tax on large tech companies with more than about $800 million in annual revenue. The first tax payment is due on Monday, and is retroactive to sales made since the start of 2022. The Wall Street Journal estimated that initial payment would be around $3 billion for the collective U.S. firms being taxed. Upon the president's post on Friday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's office shared a brief response.
