Even as Hong Kong has kick-started efforts to promote nine 'tourism hotspots' identified by a government working group, industry players and experts say the city has much more to entice visitors.
To revive the city's flagging tourism scene, they suggested tapping its rich culinary traditions, exploiting the appeal of Cantopop and the popularity of Hong Kong action films from the past, and telling more stories about its places and people.
Bring back and celebrate the dai pai dong and cha chaan teng, declared veteran entertainment and hospitality entrepreneur Allan Zeman, founder and chairman of the Lan Kwai Fong Group.
Once found everywhere and famous for tasty, cheap food cooked on the spot, streetside hawker stalls known as dai pai dong have been disappearing.
Amid concerns over hygiene and noise, the authorities tightened the rules and have not issued new licences since the 1970s.
Even so, local cafes or cha chaan teng continue to serve up comfort food and drinks at wallet-friendly prices, drawing a steady stream of customers looking for milk tea with pineapple buns, egg tarts, scrambled eggs and toast, a fried pork chop and rice or macaroni soup, and more.

CY Leung renews call for Hong Kong landlords to cut rents amid rising vacancies
Hong Kong's former leader Leung Chun-ying has challenged landlords to 'adjust their mentality' over rental yields as he renewed his call for price cuts to stem a 40-year high vacancy rate for commercial properties from rising further amid a slackening economy. Leung, now a top political adviser to the country, also warned that landlords would be harmed in the end if they refused to budge on lowering rents. 'It is sheer self-delusion if landlords think they can get the rent level they want by leaving the premises vacant and waiting [instead of cutting the rents],' Leung said on Saturday. Leung, now a vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, weighed in on the debate over Hong Kong's commercial rents last week after the latest government report showed that, by the end of 2024, the total vacant floor area of private commercial buildings reached 1.4 million square metres. The empty space represented a vacancy rate of 11.8 per cent – a record high over the past 40 years. The slackening economy has also resulted in a string of high-profile shutdowns of established restaurants in recent months, with some citing high rents as a reason. 'The overall economic environment is like that now. Perhaps it is partly because people are going north to spend, or people are getting used to buying takeaway, or shopping online,' Leung said.

SHKP Tuen Mun project sells out, signalling rebound in Hong Kong's property market
All 160 units of a new residential project by Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) in Tuen Mun sold out on Saturday, buoyed by a recovering stock market and low interest rates, a sign that Hong Kong's property market may be seeing a sustained rebound, according to analysts. The first round of sales for Novo Land Phase 3A offered 160 units at listed prices, with an additional five units available by tender. Prices started at under HK$3 million (US$382,173) for a three-bedroom flat. All available units were snapped up by 2pm, the developer said. The units varied in size from 259 to 686 sq ft, including studio to three-bedroom layouts, with the bigger units priced as high as HK$7.8 million. The average price per square foot was HK$11,398. The pricing reflected a 1.7 per cent discount compared to the initial price list of the previous Phase 3B release. 'Favourable market conditions are the main reason for the strong sales,' said Sammy Po Siu-ming, CEO of Midland Realty's residential division. 'Interest rates are low, the stock market is rising, and the economy is gradually recovering. The central government is also taking steps to support the property market.' China's smartphone shipments plunge in May amid weak consumption, fewer new models
Smartphone shipments in China plunged 21.8 per cent year on year in May to 23.7 million units, the biggest decline this year, according to the latest data from a government-run research institute. Foreign brands, including Apple's iPhone, saw shipments drop by 9.7 per cent in May from a year earlier, outperforming local brands. Domestic manufacturers, including Huawei Technologies and Xiaomi, saw their shipments fall a combined 24.2 per cent, according to data released on Friday by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The May figures marked a downward shift from the previous three months, as monthly shipments from February to April all rose year on year. Smartphone shipments in February jumped 38 per cent year on year to 19.7 million units, although in January they had dropped 14.3 per cent to 27.2 million, CAICT data showed. 'Domestic brands faced difficulties in the release of new models,' the Shenzhen Mobile Communications Association said in a post on its official WeChat account on Saturday.
