After ankle surgery, what's next for Memphis Grizzlies' Zach Edey? Here's what one doctor says
The offseason injury bug found its way back to Memphis.
While participating in an offseason training session last week, Grizzlies center Zach Edey sprained his left ankle.
He recently had surgery to stabilize the ankle and will be reevaluated in four months. The injury is expected to keep the 7-foot-4 second-year player out for the beginning of the season, which starts Oct. 21.

The Grizzlies now must adjust to playing without Edey, who won't have the benefit of participating in a normal first NBA offseason.
The Commercial Appeal spoke with Dr. Kenneth Jung, an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Orthopaedics in Los Angeles, to help provide clarity on Edey's outlook. Jung has worked with the Los Angeles Lakers and L.A. Kings, among other professional sports teams.
Explaining Zach Edey's injury
Edey's surgery was for an ankle sprain, a notion that can be perplexing. In theory, he could have healed from the sprain and been able to return to action before the NBA season began.

However, there's more to this injury. Surgery was elected to address the laxity in his left ankle, the Grizzlies said on June 10.
In Jung's words, the ligaments in an ankle are like pieces of taffy.
"Each time you roll it or sprain it, it can get a little more stretched out," he said. "It's not elastic. It doesn't go back to its original length . . . If it's stretched out, it doesn't necessarily in part have the same stability to the joint as it did before."
Edey's surgery will stabilize the ankle and prevent constant sprains that could progressively get worse.

Jung said doctors will let the ankle heal before working on range of motion or anything else.

"You don't want it to heal stretched out," he said. "If it heals stretched out, then you might as well have not done anything."
Jung estimates that it will take the ligament four to eight weeks to stabilize and heal before Edey can start rehab. Then there will be a gradual ramp-up toward basketball activity.
Strength and confidence will be two of the biggest factors that determine how fast or methodical Edey's return will be after he's reevaluated in four months.
"I'm sure that he's had episodes where he kind of just plants on it and it rolls," Jung said. "If he feels unsteady in that sense, then it's building up that confidence again where he can plant on it, push off and go. He's got to trust it again."

These types of ankle surgeries are usually done in the offseason. While not the most common surgical procedure, there are NBA players who have had a similar surgery and returned to basketball.

Former Grizzlies guard Sam Merrill needed surgery in 2022 after enduring chronic ankle sprains. At the time, he called the surgery a "pretty rare" process.
NBA veteran Taj Gibson had issues with his left ankle for multiple seasons before seeing a foot specialist and getting surgery in June 2015. He was able to return at the beginning of the following season and played in 73 games.
Each player's body is different, but these examples show that Memphis can still factor Edey into its long-term plans.
"(The surgeries) do very well," Jung said. "You hear ankle sprain, and it's not like Achilles rupture or ACL tear when the general public automatically associates it with surgery. In this case, you're doing surgery more for the chronic instability. Not necessarily because he had an ankle sprain."

On Friday, the Blue Jackets were deep in trade talks with the New York Islanders for defenseman Noah Dobson, but they backed out when the asking price, in Waddell's opinion, got too steep. On Saturday, the Anaheim Ducks traded goaltender John Gibson to the Detroit Red Wings for goaltender Peter Mrazek and two draft picks. The Blue Jackets, according to sources, were not involved in trade talks with Anaheim for Gibson. Advertisement The Blue Jackets did make two trades: a fourth-round pick this year (No. 109) and a fourth-round pick next year to the Red Wings to move up to No. 76 and draft Vass, and two seventh-round picks (Nos. 205, 218) to the Seattle Kraken to move up higher in the round (No. 198). After Reece James had given Chelsea a 1-0 lead with a goal from a direct free kick, the match was suspended in the 86th minute for nearly two hours due to severe weather in the area. Once the match resumed, Benfica miraculously equalised deep in stoppage time thanks to Angel Di Maria's goal from the penalty spot after VAR spotted a handball by Malo Gusto. The miracle ended there for Benfica, however, as Gianluca Prestianni was sent off for a second booking early in extra time. Chelsea retook the lead in the 108th minute as Christopher Nkunku finished off a scruffy rebound, before Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall added late goals to wrap things up. It will be interesting to see how many fans come back for the resumption of play. The game was petering out fairly uneventfully. If you had a choice, would you really stick around for an hour to watch the last five minutes? Getty Images There were hopes that the players would only be off for half an hour once the weather delay begun, but we have now passed an hour since the referee took them all off the pitch. And that means that there has been lightning in the area directly surrounding Bank of America Stadium. For anyone that needs it, here is a reminder of FIFA's weather delay ruling: The match is automatically suspended if there is lightning within 10 miles (16.1km) of the stadium. The match director is informed about it and then tells the referee to stop the game and take the players off the pitch. 86' Benfica 0-1 Chelsea — weather delay There was also some off-field Chelsea news earlier that I'm sure will have excited their fans, and it came courtesy of our very own Sebastian Stafford-Bloor who said: Chelsea have reached an agreement in principle to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens. The two clubs have reached an agreement over a deal, with the fee yet to be confirmed. The deal is set to be completed pending a medical. The Athletic reported on June 7 that Chelsea had submitted an official proposal with Dortmund to sign Gittens and that the Premier League club agreed a seven-year contract with the forward. However, Chelsea were not able to agree a deal with Dortmund before the transfer deadline ahead of the Club World Cup on June 10. Dortmund are also playing in the tournament in the United States with Gittens featuring as a substitute in the opening game against Fluminense. The good news, however, is that two thirds of the pitch is bathed in sunshine, so here's hoping the storm has largely passed. To pick apart the numbers and show Chelsea's performance in the game up to the weather stoppage, how about this stat: they had 58 per cent of the ball. They also had 12 shots (six on target) to Benfica's three (one on target). Most importantly, they turned it into a goal. Levi Colwill, Noni Madueke and Cole Palmer were all part of the team who won it last time around in 2023. Now a new generation gets to hold the title including one of Chelsea's own: goalkeeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe. A product of their academy, Omari Hutchinson, scored in today's final, as did Liverpool's Harvey Elliott and Jonathan Rowe of Marseille.
