Brad Waters' Monday Racebook: Horses to follow from Caulfield on Saturday

FIVE TO FOLLOW
THANKS GORGEOUS (1-length 2nd of 12, Race 1): The Mark and Levi Kavanagh -trained filly raced at the back of the field before making ground on debut at Sandown before the stable decided on contrasting tactics at Caulfield. Jockey Fred Kersley sent Thanks Gorgeous to the lead from barrier 10 from where she gave a great sight. The smart Signature Scent was the only one to get by her late. She'll improve again and should be harder to run down at her next outing.
Signature Scent makes it two wins from two starts to begin her promising career as she digs in late to take out the first at Caulfield ðŸ'° @CWilliamsJockey cuts the margin to just six wins in the Vic Metro Jockeys' Premiership ðŸ'€ @cmaherracing pic.twitter.com/sYL4HKiHap

SHARE THE STARS (3.2-length 5th of 8, Race 3): Punters thought Share The Stars had no business being at Caulfield, allowing her to start at $201 while she stepped up in class following a Ballarat Synthetic placing. However, the William Morissey -trained filly ran a much better race than her price suggested. She got back in the field and made ground in the straight to finish on the heels of the placegetters. There's a race for her back at the provincials soon.

PROCEAN (0.4-length 3rd of 12, Race 5): Champion trainer Chris Waller might have a talented stayer in the form of Procean. He stepped up to 2000m at Caulfield after a midfield effort over 1600m in Sydney but acquitted himself well. The stable wanted to ride him closer to the lead but he was slow into stride and was chasing a long way out. He ran on well in the straight but was shaded by the promising Stop The Rock. There's a win in him soon, possibly over 2400m.
Stop The Rock makes it two wins in a row with a barnstorming run on the outside proving too good for them ðŸ'° @mj_payne x @TheBeeegan combine a running double at Caulfield ðŸ'¥ pic.twitter.com/RWsIQ7FYuz

EYE OF THE EAGLE (2.7-length 4th of 15, Race 6): Hadn't raced for a month but made a pleasing return at Caulfield. He was up in class and didn't much luck early as circumstances left him racing three-wide with cover throughout. As he was returning from a freshen, Eye Of The Eagle would have been entitled to tire in the straight but he stuck to his task well. He'll be fitter for it and can pinch a 1400m race soon.
Home Rule causes an upset at Caulfield with a sensational wire-to-wire performance ðŸ' @MaddieRaymond93 @jaylahkennedy pic.twitter.com/9JiRXUwxm0

NEW YORK LUSTRE (1-length 2nd of 10, Race 8): The Enver Juufovic -trained mare has made rapid progress this season, going from a Benchmark 58 race at Seymour in December to a Benchmark 78 win in the space of three starts but stepped up to Group 3 level in the Sir John Monash Stakes. She started at $10 but did a terrific job, boxing on in the straight to finish only a length from the well-performed Sydney mare In Flight. There's a Listed or Group 3 win in store for New York Lustre in the coming weeks.
In Flight takes flight in the G3 Sir John Monash Stakes with a stunning turn of foot proving far too strong for her third win in a row ðŸ'¥ @CWilliamsJockey picks up a Caulfield treble as he continues to chip away in the chase for the Vic Metro Jockey's Premiership ðŸ† pic.twitter.com/av0p79GJ32

FORGIVE
SHADHAVAR (2.1-length 5th of 12, Race 2): Sttarted as a $2.90 favourite after good recent jumpouts but just peaked on her run in the last 100m after racing on the speed at Caulfield. She'll be much fitter for that outing and can repay punters in her next couple of runs.
Scampi bounces back into the winner's circle in superb fashion for his third win from his last five starts ðŸ'¥ @cmaherracing x @CWilliamsJockey combine again for an opening double at Caulfield ✌ï¸ pic.twitter.com/F4sX0jmMBS
— Racing.com (@Racing) July 12, 2025
XARPO (5.8-length 8th of 8, Race 3): The $2.90 favourite failed to beat a runner home but there were circumstances against her. Stewards queried jockey Ryan Houston 's ride on the Simon Zahra -trained filly, telling him he should have eased for cover at the 900m instead of pushing to race outside the leader. Xarpo was later found to have EIPH so can be forgiven for her Caulfield result.
AZTEC STATE (2.8-length 5th of 15, Race 9): Beaten favourite in the last race of the day but still did a good job to get as close as he did. Drawing barrier 15 left Aztec State racing back and wide to the home turn before he worked home soundly under 60kg to finish fifth. He can bounce back in the coming weeks.
Scampi bounces back into the winner's circle in superb fashion for his third win from his last five starts ðŸ'¥ @cmaherracing x @CWilliamsJockey combine again for an opening double at Caulfield ✌ï¸ pic.twitter.com/F4sX0jmMBS

AFL 2025: Garry Lyon says Harley Reid trip worthy of a suspension, how much was he fined, MRO, West Coast Eagles loss to Port Adelaide
Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon says burgeoning West Coast star Harley Reid should have been suspended for his tripping act last Sunday. Reid was fined $10,000 — down to $6,250 with an early plea — by the Match Review Officer for intentionally tripping Port Adelaide veteran Travis Boak in the third quarter of the Eagles' 26-point loss at Adelaide Oval. With the footy in his hands, Boak appeared to have a clean exit from congestion before Reid stuck his leg out in a blatant attempt at stopping his opponent in his tracks. You can watch the incident in the player above. Harley Reid has copped criticism for this tripping act against Port Adelaide's Travis Boak. The second-year prodigy has been fined six times this season but not yet suspended after a ban last year cost him his Rising Star eligibility. And while he's totalled at least $15,000 worth of sanctions this year alone, Lyon was resolute that Reid's act was worthy of a ban, and that more fines wouldn't deter him. 'I can't fathom what the purpose is for fining a man for an act that, had he done it on the first occasion, I would've suspended him for, let alone the sixth,' Lyon began on Fox Footy's AFL 360. 'That, Gerard, I'm sorry — and I've defended Harley across the journey — that is a suspension every day of the week. 'And if you condone this in the manner of just giving him a fine, money's not going to be a problem for Harley Reid. 'The past playing cohort that are in the media now will all agree on that — that's the leg-breaker. That's a kick, Gerard. Harley Reid was lucky not to be suspended. (Photo by James Wiltshire/AFL Photos via Getty Images) 'I'm not being overdramatic. You know I've been a defender of Harley ... but that's not a fine, Gerard, let alone the sixth time he's been fined this year. 'That is a suspension for Harley Reid every single day, and if you don't suspend that, you leave the door open for lots of terrible incidents. That's failed the game, that. That's a failure.' Respected Fox Footy commentator Gerard Whateley added: 'If we are searching for the dangerous trip, that was every bit of it.' The 20-year-old has played in all 17 West Coast games this season, averaging 18.6 disposals per game but leading the league for clangers. Reid went head-to-head against Port Adelaide star Jason Horne-Francis on numerous occasions on Sunday — headlined by a spicy back-and-forth that included verbal barbs — and Lyon quizzed AFL 360 guest Andrew McQualter on the challenges associated with keeping his highly talented youngster in line. 'It's an ongoing battle,' McQualter told Fox Footy on Monday night. 'We're sort of having it a bit with a few of our other players as well. 'We want our players to be fiercely competitive, but we also want to stay incredibly disciplined and not give away free kicks. 'We have some challenges with the territory game as it is, so we don't want to give opposition any easy ones. 'We're going to keep trying to be fierce but not give away any free kicks.' On how the former No.1 draft pick has handled feedback about his missteps, McQualter added: 'He's certainly responsive to it (constructive feedback), he understands that he wants to win and compete, but he has to get his balance right. '(It's) part of his learning process he's going through, and I've got no doubt he'll continue to improve and get better at it.' West Indies v Australia, 3rd Test, Day 3 scores, news: Green, Cummins, hold the key
Cameron Green and Pat Cummins hold Australia's third Test fortunes in their hands when day three begins on Tuesday. Green (42*) and Cummins (5*) are holding the fort as Australia wobbled to 6-99, a lead of 181 runs, as Alzarri Joseph led the hosts' fightback. Joseph took 3-19 to tear through the Aussie XI, while Shamar Joseph (2-26) and Justin Greaves (1-19) have done the damage as the pink ball again proved almost unplayable under floodlights in the final session.
