I bullied Bayern Munich big guns for Aberdeen and there's no reason current crop can't make Euro memories of their own

Lee Miller remembers giving Bayern a hellish night at Pittodrie and believes the current group of Dons stars can now make their own memories
Lee Miller remembers bullying Bayern big guns Lucio and Martin Demichelis on a blockbuster European night at Pittodrie.
That was the last time Aberdeen made it beyond a group stage on the continent as Jimmy Calderwood's side bulldozed their way to the last-32 and a showdown with the Bundesliga behemoths.

Miller was the target man who relished the challenge of rumbling with some of the world's top defenders in that 2007-08 UEFA Cup campaign.

Now he reckons the time has come for a new generation of Dons heroes to muscle in on Europe's knockout rounds.
Not just that but the 42-year-old reckons they must find the strength to carry the double burden of performing well in the domestic season too.
Thanks to their stunning Scottish Cup success, Jimmy Thelin 's side are guaranteed group-stage football for the second time in three seasons.
A Europa League play-off is secured along with the safety net of the Conference League should they lose that tie. But not since Calderwood's side have a Scottish team outside the Old Firm made it to the knockout stages.
Worse than that, such has been the toil of juggling Euro Thursdays with Premiership Sundays that Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs have all slipped out of Europe then failed to even finish in the top six in the last two years' competitions.
Dundee United, Kilmarnock and St Mirren have also struggled. But Miller reckons the fatigue excuse shouldn't wash any more as he urged Thelin's men to embrace the challenge.

He said: 'I don't see why they can't go on a little run. You need a bit of luck and your players to be up to speed early on. That's difficult and obviously that takes its toll on the league campaign as well. We've seen that with the clubs in Europe. But then you look at the clubs down south, how big the Championship, League One, League Two are ... they have games all the time.
'I don't know if we do things right up here. It shouldn't impact the league campaign.

'If you're playing Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, we need to prepare better and have a better scope to conquer it. Sometimes you're left thinking: 'Do you really want to qualify for Europe?'
'Yes, for the money, of course you do. But if it affects your league campaign the following season and where you're going to finish up – possible relegation– that's a hard thing to deal with.'
Calderwood's side, who famously thumped Copenhagen 4-0 at a packed Pittodrie to secure the last-32 spot, still managed to finish fourth in the top fight. That was despite having to handle eight games in Europe, including trips to Dnipro, Panathinaikos, Atletico Madrid and Bayern.

Sone Aluko and Josh Walker netted famous goals as Bayern were held 2-2 at a powder-keg Pittodrie. But the Bundesliga giants made light work of the second leg in the Allianz Arena, winning 5-1.
Miller added: 'We had a good squad, really experienced. Jimmy instilled belief in us. He slaughtered Oliver Kahn before the Bayern game, saying: 'He's not that great in goal!'
'It was an incredible time for Aberdeen. I loved playing against the better players. I was good in the air and the likes of Lucio and Demichelis didn't expect you to win the header. If you did, they'd be going in a huff.

'Next ball I knew I was getting fouled – I'm already 2-0 up, man to man, striker v centre-half.
'So I loved the challenge, I thrived in that atmosphere. We got spanked in that 5-1 loss in Munich but it doesn't matter. They didn't like coming to Pittodrie. No team liked coming to Pittodrie.'

Aberdeen kick off their Premiership campaign at another of Miller's old clubs, Hearts, in a live Monday night showdown on August 4. That will also see former Dons boss Derek McInnes make his Tynecastle dugout debut.
And Miller said: 'It's a Monday night game, which will be interesting. But there are loads of wee things. McInnes up against his old club, his first game with his new team.
'Aberdeen starting off as Scottish Cup holders. They beat Hearts in the semi-final – so it is a chance for the Jambos to get one back on the Dons. Everybody would say they are shooting for third place, if not second depending on how they feel.
'You've got to have a bit of ambition. The Cup win will give Aberdeen momentum. They played an incredible Celtic team and beat them, albeit on penalties, but they took them right to the wire.
'So they'll need to springboard off the back of that and hopefully they can get a good start to the season.'

‘Healthy competition' can drive England to Euro glory

England midfielder Ella Toone believes 'healthy competition' within the side can push the Lionesses on to glory at the European Women's Championship this summer. Sarina Wiegman's side earned a convincing 7-0 victory over Jamaica in their final game before they aim to defend their European crown in Switzerland starting on Saturday against France. Toone got on the scoresheet in an England shirt for the first time since a 5-1 win over Italy in February 2024 as she netted both the opener and third goal from range. Send-off victory 🙌 — Lionesses (@Lionesses) June 30, 2025 There has been significant change in the England side since they reached the World Cup final two years ago but Toone is excited about the squad England have at their disposal for this year's tournament. She told the England website: 'It's nice to send ourselves off to the Euros in that style. 'I've waited a while for another goal in an England shirt and two came today, so obviously I'm really happy with that. But overall, the team performance was great and we're excited now going into the Euros. 'We've got a very talented squad, a very exciting group, and for us, we're going to take each game as it comes, we're going to step out and give our all as we always do, and hopefully we can make the nation proud. 'There's so much talent, there's players who have been to tournaments, players who are going to their first, and no matter what role I have in the tournament I'll make sure that I give my best for the team – we'll all be pushing each other and it's healthy competition.' Georgia Stanway was also on target at the King Power Stadium on Sunday alongside Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo, Aggie Beever-Jones and Beth Mead. The Bayern Munich midfielder missed some of the season through injury but insists she has bounced back stronger. She said: 'I didn't expect to be having surgery at the end of January, it's my first injury in about 10 years so I've had a good innings. Maybe it happened for a reason but I'm feeling good, I'm feeling fresh. 'It's a cliche but I do feel fitter, faster and sharper than I have in a long time. I've timed it perfectly. 'But I think today the main focus was just trying to enjoy it. We've worked hard in training and we wanted to get those actions into the game today.'

Arsenal handed huge Nico Williams transfer boost after 'saying yes' to move

Arsenal may be able to find their way back into the Nico Williams transfer race after the Spaniard's move to Barcelona hit a stumbling block after an agreement was made Nico Williams has seen his move to Barcelona stall, despite terms appearing to be agreed for the switch. A verbal agreement was said to be in place between player and club as the Catalan side attempt to claim his signature for the second summer in succession. Last year, Williams opted to remain with Athletic Bilbao despite Barcelona's interest but now appears keen to make the move to Camp Nou. The Arsenal target has told his current club that he wants to leave to join the La Liga champions in the summer transfer window. ‌ While the deal was looking set to be sewn up in a straightforward fashion, reports in Spain now suggest negotiations have stalled. The standstill is said to be as a result of 'high demands' from the star's agent emerging as a surprise when the contract paperwork started to be drawn up. ‌ But the point of contention raised appears to be that Williams wants a guarantee over his registration. Last year, Barca were unable to register new signing Dani Olmo in their squad until January due to La Liga's financial rules. For now, the club are claimed to find the request unreasonable after the condition was not part of the original talks. Williams does not want to suffer the same fate as his international team-mate however. Hansi Flick's side are claimed to have provided assurances that they will be able to register him for the start of the season. That has not proven convincing enough it seems. Barca, while there is the opportunity to pay Williams' release clause, are also looked upon less favourably by Athletic Bilbao. The Basque side are pressuring the league to remain vigilant over Barcelona's registration capacity and have criticised their rivals over their public courting of WIlliams. The combination of scenarios could just leave a door open for other interested suitors in Arsenal and Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga giants are still hoping to sign the 22-year-old despite his preference for Barcelona. ‌ They are said to have no problem paying his €58 million (£49.6m) release clause plus the corresponding CPI , which would see the package read €62m (£53m). Bilbao would be happier seeing the charge depart to Bayern over Barcelona. Speaking about a potential deal for Williams, Barcelona sporting director Deco said: "We need to strengthen in this position. "As wingers, we only really have Lamine [Yamal] and Raphinha. From there, there are names coming out and it will come down to price and quality. ‌ "Nico was there last year but for me, at that time, Dani Olmo was the priority. Now. the same as with other players, Nico is showing a strong desire to come ... And if the right conditions are met in his case, we'll definitely try to complete the deal. "There's a process with any signing: speaking with agents, clubs, knowing the contractual situation ... Nico's case it clear because he has a release clause. We've met with his agent to see what he wants and we will see if it's possible." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. But that wasn't enough to earn a permanent move as Milan suffered a disappointing season. And he could now be set for a new challenge in Turkey's Super Lig. READ MORE ON FOOTBALL REST IN PEACE Former England striker and Middlesbrough legend Alan Peacock has died aged 87 According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, a verbal agreement has been made between Roma and Besiktas, with Abraham set to jet in for a medical soon. Abraham would be a statement signing Solskjaer, who took the reins in Turkey in January after a three-year spell away from management following his ill-fated tenure with Manchester United. Abraham will join Besiktas' current front-man Ciro Immobile, who netted 15 league goals last season after making his own switch from Serie A in the summer.
