Spain pushes past Canada 24-23 in men's rugby test match
The host Canadians recovered from an 11-6 halftime deficit at Edmonton's Clarke Stadium to take a 20-11 lead on the strength of two tries by Calgary's Matt Oworu.
Peter Nelson of Dungannon, Northern Island, contributed 13 points from the tee for Canada, but Spain capitalized on a last-minute penalty to snatch the win.
López Bontempo's 25-metre kick sealed the victory for the visitors.
Back-to-back yellow cards to Canada's props — Calixto Martinez for a high tackle and Emerson Prior for collapsing a maul — had handed momentum back to Spain. A penalty try and another Bontempo kick brought the score to 23-21.
The match wrapped July's test window for Canada ahead of the Pacific Nations Cup.
Canada opens against the United States in Calgary on Aug. 22 in a match that doubles as the start of Canada's 2027 Rugby World Cup qualification campaign.
'I think we showed we have the talent to hang with everyone,' Oworu said after the loss to Spain.
'When we were pushing to score at the end, we just slipped for half-a-second, and that's just test rugby. It's a game of inches, and we just missed on that last inch.'
'As long as we play in the right places and listen to our shot-callers, there's no need to search for other answers — all the answers are in the room. We're confident.'

Murray, the Nuggets superlative shooting guard, wasn't born in Kitchener until seven years after that game. 'It's always an honour and a pleasure to get to return home to play basketball in Canada,' said Murray. 'I'm excited for the opportunity for myself and my team to face off against the Raptors in front of the basketball-hungry fans of Vancouver, it's going to be a lot of fun.' The Canada Series has seen 16 different teams playing 19 pre-season games — 14 of which featured the Raptors — in front of nearly 360,000 fans in six Canadian cities. Also part of the Canada Series was a 2019 game in Vancouver, where Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks downed freshly former Raptor Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers 102-87. This pre-season, the Raptors travel to face the Kings in Sacramento on Oct. 8, host the Boston Celtics on Oct. 10 at Scotiabank Arena and before visiting the Wizards in Washington on Oct. 12. Toronto hits the road again to take on the Celtics in Boston on Oct. 15, then close out the pre-season at home against the Brooklyn Nets on Oct. 17. The current roster features all-stars in Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram, 2025 No. 9 overall pick Collin Murray-Boyles, and Canadians RJ Barrett and A.J. Lawson, whom have both represented Canada internationally.

Larisey, acquired from the English club for an undisclosed fee, will stay with the Dash through the 2027 season. 'Clarissa brings a dynamic, proven goal-scoring presence to our team, and her experience across top European leagues and the international stage adds tremendous value to our group,' Dynamo president of soccer Angela Hucles Mangano said. 'She's not only a talented and versatile attacker, but also a competitor whose character and drive align perfectly with the culture we're building in Houston.' Larisey, 26, recorded 27 goals in 68 career appearances in Europe and also competed at the international level in the UEFA Women's Champions League for three seasons. Toronto Raptors to hold training camp in Calgary
Article content The Toronto Raptors are Canada's NBA team, so it's only fitting they'll visit Alberta and British Columbia this Fall. Article content The team announced Tuesday that training camp will be held at the University of Calgary, starting September 30, marking the first time Toronto's held its camp in Alberta. Article content Additionally, NBA Canada announced Tuesday Toronto would host the Denver Nuggets in Vancouver on October 6. It's a nice gift from the league, considering it let former owner Michael Heisley screw over Grizzlies fans with the move to Memphis. Now fans there will get to see three-time NBA MVP and all-time great Nikola Jokic, two of the league's best Canadians in Jamal Murray and RJ Barrett, plus long-time Raptors favourite Jonas Valanciunas, new Denver addition Cam Johnson and rookie Raptors Collin Murray-Boyles. As well, they should see the Raptors debut of former all-star forward Brandon Ingram.
