Kolkata: Maruti Suzuki has set a target of 4 lakh exports in 2025-26, a 20% growth over the 3.3 lakh cars it exported in 2024-25. Exports this May were 80% higher than last May. Aggressive exports helped the company overcome sluggish domestic sales, to record 3% overall sales growth.
Domestic sales were down 5.5% in May as mini and compact car sales continued to slide, impacted by both the rise in prices of entry-level vehicles as well as due to sales taking a hit in key northwestern markets amid the conflict between India and Pakistan.
Rahul Bharti, Maruti Suzuki's senior executive officer (corporate affairs), said the aggressive exports strategy compensated for the slowdown in the domestic market where industry retail sales were down 4%, according to Vahan figures.
In April and May, Maruti Suzuki exported 59,130 cars. South Africa was the largest market, accounting for 27% of exports, followed by Japan at 16% and Chile at 11%.
Maruti Suzuki exports to 100 countries. Fronx, Jimny, Baleno, Swift, Ertiga are the top export models. Once the company starts manufacturing the eVitara, it will export the car to Europe and Japan.
The company has raised its exports over the past few years.
It exported 2.4 lakh cars in 2021-22, 2.6 lakh cars in 2022-23, 2.8 lakh in 2023-24 and 3.3 lakh in 2024-25.
The 4 lakh export target was higher than the 3 lakh sales clocked by Toyota Kirloskar, the fifth-ranked automaker in India, in 2024-25.
In the domestic market, the three most sold cars in May were all Maruti Suzuki products: Dzire, Ertiga and Brezza. Even though sales this May were 5.5% lower than in May 2024.
Senior executive officer Partha Banerjee attributed the decline in sales to the rise in the cost of entry-level cars, due to regulatory compliance, that made them unaffordable for a large section of potential customers.
The mini segment is down 31.6%, with sales crashing from 9,902 units in May 2024 to 6,776 in May 2025. The compact segment also took a hit with sales down 11%, from 68,206 in May 2024 to 61,502 in May 2025.
"The India-Pakistan conflict in May impacted sales in the border states of Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat and the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir that contribute 22% to the company's sales pie. Many customers who took finance have not taken deliveries. Sales of vehicles to tourist taxi operators have also taken a hit," Banerjee said.

Two-wheeler EV sales skid for first time in FY26 in July, legacy cos retain lead

New Delhi: Monthly sales of electric two-wheelers in India slid for the first time this financial year in July, after recording considerable year-on-year increases in the previous three months, data from the Union government's Vahan registry portal showed. Legacy manufacturers TVS Motor Co Ltd and Bajaj Auto Ltd, however, kept the top two spots, followed by Ola Electric Mobility Ltd in the third place in July. Bengaluru-based electric vehicle maker startup Ather Energy Ltd saw a significant jump in its market share in July compared with the same month of the previous fiscal year. Electric two-wheeler sales dipped a little over 4% to 102,871 units in July, compared with 107,654 units in the same month last fiscal, after monthly sales in the first quarter of FY26 rose about 31% year-on-year. TVS Motor sold over 22,000 units in July, followed by Bajaj Auto with 19,650 units and Ola Electric with about 17,848 units. Hot on Ola's heels was peer pure-play electric vehicle (EV) maker Ather, selling 16,231 units in the month. Ather's sales made up about 15.77% of the total electric two-wheeler pie in July, significantly higher than 9.49% in the same month last year. 'July sales for 2W ev have dropped significantly, from 107k in July 2024 & 105k in June 2025 to 101k levels in July 2025. The biggest drop is from Ola, where they are having a crisis of customer confidence. Both supply and demand-side factors are contributing to decline - supply is constrained due to rare earth magnet shortage and demand due to lower interest and limited subsidies,' said Anurag Singh, advisor, Primus Partners. The industry is currently dealing with a shortage of rare earth magnets imported from China due to an export control instituted by the Chinese commerce ministry. The rare earth magnet issue has threatened production of electric vehicles as it is a key component in motors used to run the vehicles. With China imposing restrictions on exports and Indian players failing to get any shipments, Bajaj has threatened a 'zero-Chetak' month in August. Meanwhile, Ola Electric will soon start rolling out rare earth free motors in its vehicles which can help it achieve production without any disruption. While TVS has not given an exact commentary on the situation, the management mentioned during their Q1 FY26 earnings call that the company is "managing day to day production". Ola Electric, which was market leader in the 2-wheeler EV space in FY25, has been struggling to hold its ground as legacy players surge. Ola Electric chairman and managing director Bhavish Aggarwal recently told investors that the company will focus on a profitable approach rather than aggressively pursuing leadership, at a time when TVS has taken its crown. The company has also struggled with registration issues this year, which led to a backlog of vehicles in February to April but has now been cleared. As per its guidance, the company needs to sell 25,000 vehicles per month to break even at an operating profit level. Meanwhile, Ather's Tarun Mehta told Mint earlier that the industry can use light rare earths in motors that have relatively diversified supply chain and whose exports have not been restricted by China. Electric two-wheeler buyers get demand-side incentives under the PM E-drive scheme, which allows a maximum subsidy of ₹ 5,000 per vehicle till FY26. Under the scheme set to run for two fiscals – FY25 and FY26 – the initial subsidy available for consumers was ₹ 10,000 per two-wheeler. The scheme, however, followed the principle of tapering of subsidies and reduced the amount to ₹ 5,000 in FY26, according to scheme guidelines. Under this scheme, manufacturers have to sell electric vehicles at a discount to consumers and later claim reimbursements from the government for the difference. Additionally, the production-linked incentive scheme for automobiles and auto parts provides incentives to original equipment manufacturers for sales of electric vehicles. But the scheme has seen a tepid response from the industry in its first year of disbursal. In FY25, the government doled out ₹ 322 crore to four automakers – one of which was Ola Electric. This amount is expected to rise to ₹ 2,000 crore in FY26, Union heavy industries minister HD Kumaraswamy told Mint in an interview in June.

ICRA projects modest growth across Indian auto segments in FY26 amid mixed demand trends

India's automotive sector is expected to witness moderate growth across key segments in FY26, aided by improving macroeconomic conditions, festive demand and infrastructure push, even as concerns persist over supply chain challenges and consumer sentiment, ratings agency ICRA said in its latest outlook. ICRA expects wholesale volumes in the passenger vehicle (PV) segment to grow by a modest 1–4 per cent this fiscal. The segment continues to grapple with elevated inventory levels, production constraints due to shortages of critical components like rare earth magnets used in EVs, and subdued consumer sentiment. Wholesale PV volumes declined by 1.4 per cent year-on-year in Q1 FY2026, and in June 2025, fell by 9 per cent sequentially and 7 per cent on a year-on-year basis, despite discounts offered by OEMs. Inventory levels increased to 55 days by the end of June, according to FADA. Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) remain the most preferred category, contributing 65–66 per cent of total PV volumes. While steady model launches are expected to support demand, headwinds persist for exports due to forex shortages in key African markets and ongoing inflationary pressures. Nevertheless, export volumes showed sequential growth of 14 per cent in June 2025, with Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai maintaining their lead. Two-wheeler projection The two-wheeler segment is projected to grow by 6–9 per cent in FY2026, driven by healthy rural incomes, expectations of a normal monsoon, and recovery in urban demand. While domestic wholesale volumes declined 4.3 per cent year-on-year in June 2025 to 1.5 million units, retail volumes rose by 5.1 per cent, supported by strong rural and semi-urban demand. Electric two-wheelers saw a 5 per cent sequential growth in June, with monthly volumes at 1.05 lakh units and penetration remaining in the 6–7 per cent range. Exports also rose by 34 per cent year-on-year, although currency constraints and inflation remain potential barriers in some markets like Nigeria. Commercial vehicle projection In the commercial vehicle (CV) segment, ICRA anticipates a 3–5 per cent increase in wholesale volumes during FY2026, supported by improving pace of construction and infrastructure activity and a stable economic environment. After a marginal 1.2 per cent decline in FY2025, CV wholesales fell 3.8 per cent year-on-year in June 2025 but rose 1.7 per cent sequentially. Retail sales increased by 6.6 per cent year-on-year in June, indicating inventory correction at dealerships. The bus segment is expected to see relatively stronger growth of 8–10 per cent, aided by replacement demand, while trucks are likely to post modest gains. While demand trends remain mixed and EV production continues to face raw material bottlenecks, ICRA said the upcoming festive season and new product offerings could help support overall automotive industry volumes in the near term.>

Maruti Suzuki banks on festive push, special editions to rev up flat sales

New Delhi: Country's largest carmaker by volume, Maruti Suzuki, is counting on new limited-edition offerings and the upcoming festive season to help revive its sales. The carmaker, which reported flat sales on Friday for July, flagged subdued rural demand, rising input costs from the rollout of six airbags across its lineup, and capacity constraints in CNG models as key factors which dampened the already sluggish market sentiment during the month. 'Momentum in the rural market has softened compared to last year. While we were seeing growth of around 10 per cent previously, it has now tapered to about 2–3 per cent,' said Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer- Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki. Domestic despatches for the carmaker remained flat at 1.37 lakh units in July, matching volumes from the same month last year. Growth during the month was primarily driven by the compact car segment, which includes models like the Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR. 'Bookings for the WagonR are showing a positive trend, which is encouraging. However, there remains pressure in the entry-level segment, as the conversion from bookings to actual retail sales is still weak,' Banerjee noted. Maruti's entry-level models such as the Alto and S-Presso, along with the Ciaz sedan, continued their year-on-year decline during July. Notably, the company also reported a dip in utility vehicle despatches across models like the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, and XL6. Banerjee pointed out that sales of the Eeco van were under pressure, largely due to the cost escalation following the mandatory fitment of six airbags. 'The cost of the Eeco increased by nearly 6 per cent, which is quite substantial for this segment. There is also a bit of a challenge in securing financing,' he said. To address this, the carmaker is actively engaging with various NBFCs to ensure that prospective customers are able to access loans and continue purchasing the vehicle. It must be noted that models such as the Ignis and S-Presso still do not feature six airbags. The same applies to the Ciaz sedan, although its production has now been discontinued. Additionally, CNG penetration in Maruti Suzuki's overall portfolio stands at 40 per cent. However, while the demand for CNG models remains strong, the company is currently facing capacity constraints in this segment. According to him, the company's current network stock levels are in the range of 36 to 37 days even as it continues to calibrate the despatches to its dealers. He also confirmed that its first electric vehicle (EV)-- eVitara, which is set to debut in export markets before its domestic launch, remains on track for rollout within the current financial year, despite ongoing challenges related to the supply of rare earth magnets. Festive boost Maruti Suzuki is pinning its hopes on a 'good' festive season to revive momentum, especially in the rural market, which has been showing sluggish growth. 'If Onam goes well, followed by Ganpati, then Navratra, coupled with a good monsoon and a possible MSP price hike by the government, there's no reason why the festive season should not perform well,' Banerjee said. He added that early signs are promising, citing a 10 per cent year-on-year growth in bookings in Kerala, a key market for Onam. To cushion the impact of price hikes in entry-level models due to the mandatory six airbags, the company is also relying on its newly launched six limited edition models to drive demand.
