Proposal submitted to expand Kadazandusun language subject to four other ethnic languages
PENAMPANG: A proposal to expand the teaching of the Kadazandusun language subject in schools to include four other ethnic languages in Sabah has been submitted to the Federal Government for consideration, said Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Ewon Benedick.
He said the four major ethnic languages proposed are the Tatana language in Kuala Penyu, Kadazan Tangaa in Penampang, Murut Timugon in Tenom and Dusun Lotud in Tuaran.
The United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) president said he, along with a delegation from Sabah, had held discussions with Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and the Ministry of Education delegation last year.
'Yang Berhormat Fadhlina subsequently agreed for a special committee under the Ministry of Education to be established to study this proposal. I will continue to follow up on all efforts to realise this initiative.
'Up to now, the Kadazandusun language subject in schools has been based solely on the Bunduliwan Dusun dialect,' he said in a statement after officiating the Odou do Kaamatan celebration at Kampung Mahandoi here today.
Ewon said efforts to strengthen the ethnic language curriculum are ongoing initiatives involving various parties including the Kadazandusun Language Foundation (KLF), the Momogun National Congress (MNC), and the Sabah Ethnic Languages Association.
He said his ministry is also supporting the effort through the allocation of special funding to four ethnic language associations for the development of modules, workbooks and textbooks.
'The teaching of these four Sabah ethnic languages can be implemented on a pilot basis in selected schools. For example, in Kuala Penyu, teaching the Tatana language would be more appropriate compared to using the Bunduliwan dialect,' he said.
According to Ewon, Sabah could emulate the implementation of ethnic language education in government schools in Sarawak, which has piloted the teaching of the Iban and Bidayuh languages.
'Efforts in this direction are underway. A delegation from Sabah has also visited schools in Sarawak to observe first-hand the implementation of Bidayuh language teaching, in addition to the Iban language,' he said.

Penang Grateful To Host 2025 Malaysia Day Celebration, Pledges Full Cooperation
GEORGE TOWN, June 30 (Bernama) -- The Penang government is grateful to have been chosen as the host for the Malaysia Day celebration, which will be held at the PICCA @ Arena Butterworth Convention Centre near here on Sept 16. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state government will fully cooperate with the Federal Government to ensure its success. 'I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Federal Government, in the spirit of Malaysia, for deciding that Malaysia Day celebrations will rotate not only between Sabah and Sarawak but also among states in Peninsular Malaysia. 'Therefore, we welcome and are grateful that Penang has been chosen. The state government is part of the organising committee and we will extend our full cooperation to make this important national event a success,' he told reporters after chairing the Malaysia Day 2025 main committee meeting with Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil at Komtar here today. Also present at the meeting were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Penang state secretary Datuk Zulkifli Long, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and directors, heads and officers of departments and agencies under the Communications Ministry and the Penang government. Chow said Penang is well-prepared to host the celebration through a main committee and a working committee, supported by 16 sub-committees responsible for various aspects of preparations. 'Given the ample time until September 16, I am confident the working committee and its sub-committees will continue the preparations until the event is successfully held,' he said. Earlier, Fahmi paid a courtesy visit to Chow as part of his two-day working trip to Penang, during which they spent about 30 minutes together. Fahmi also confirmed that the Malaysia Day 2025 Celebration will take place at the PICCA @ Arena Butterworth Convention Centre and is scheduled to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

'Let us continue to work together beyond race, religion, and region for a more united, prosperous, and harmonious Sarawak,' he said while officiating at the Ngiling Bidai ceremony at Rumah Munie, Bukit Besai here on Saturday night. The ngiling bidai which marks the closing of the Gawai Dayak celebration is not merely a custom but a reflection of the identity, resilience, and dignity of the Iban community, he remarked. 'It is a reminder that even though times have changed, our cultural roots remain our guide and strength, and as a Sarawakian, I am very proud that we live in a society of various races and religions, yet we remain united. 'We not only celebrate our own festivals, but also appreciate and celebrate the cultures and festivals of other communities with great respect,' he added. Wong expressed his appreciation to the Iban community in Bukit Besai for their dedication to preserving and continuing this cherished tradition. 'Culture is not just history.
