₹20,000 crore approved for land acquisition & realignment of Nagpur-Goa expressway
The state cabinet took the decision despite strong resistance from farmers, especially those from western Maharashtra districts. During the meeting, two ministers—medical education minister Hasan Mushrif and state health minister Prakash Abitkar—expressed their reservations about taking the project ahead despite this opposition. Both are from Kolhapur district.
The ministers suggested that the state government hold discussions with the affected farmers and try to find a way out of the situation. 'They told the cabinet that the Mahayuti coalition had already faced a backlash from farmers during the Lok Sabha elections,' revealed a minister privy to the development. 'This could be repeated in the upcoming polls if the state government decides to forcibly implement the project.'
Taking this into consideration, the cabinet approved partial alignment of the project. 'It has approved the alignment connecting Pavnar, which falls in Wardha district, to Sangli covering more than 700 km,' revealed a senior official from the public works department (PWD).
The cabinet also decided to scrap the alignment going through Shirol, Karvir, Hatkanangale, Kagal, Bhudargad and Ajara talukas of Kolhapur district. 'Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis directed the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to prepare an alternate alignment for the remaining part of the project connecting Sangli with Sindhudurg district,' said another PWD official. 'Once this is done, the CM and the two deputy chief ministers will hold consultations with all the stakeholders—local MLAs and ministers among others—before taking a final decision on the alignment.'
Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar too confirmed that the state government was planning to change the alignment. 'When the ministers expressed their concern regarding resistance from farmers and requested Fadnavis to hear them out, he assured them that there was no reason for them to continue with the project if people were opposing it,' Pawar told reporters. 'The CM also assured them that he would try to change the alignment.'
The state is powering ahead with this expressway despite opposition from farmers, as it requires private agricultural land on a large scale. In the run-up to the assembly elections last year, the then chief minister Eknath Shinde had promised that the project would not be imposed on the farmers but the government changed its position after coming to power with an unprecedented majority.
The 802.592-km-long expressway will connect 12 districts: Wardha, Yavatmal, Hingoli, Nanded, Parbhani, Beed, Latur, Dharashiv, Solapur, Sangli, Kolhapur and Sindhudurg. It will later be linked to the Mumbai-Goa highway close to the Goa border. The expressway will reduce travel time between Nagpur and Goa from 18 to eight hours.
The expressway has also been positioned as a religious and cultural corridor aimed at enhancing pilgrimage connectivity across Vidarbha, Marathwada and western Maharashtra, as it will connect three major pilgrimage sites—the Mahalaxmi temple (Kolhapur), Tulja Bhavani Temple (Dharashiv) and Renuka Mata Shakti Peeth Temple (Nanded).
The project will be executed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

CPI(M) hits out at SNDP leader for remarks against minorities
Agency: PTI Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 20 (PTI) The ruling CPI(M) in Kerala urged people to remain vigilant against any attempts—by anyone—to 'undermine" the state's secular fabric. Without naming Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan, who had launched a scathing attack on minority communities for allegedly 'grabbing the opportunities meant for backward classes", a CPI(M) state secretariat statement said the Left Front government was committed to addressing the grievances of all sections of society. 'Social justice and secularism are the foundation of the government's policy," the statement added. Natesan's speeches—at Kottayam on Saturday and Kochi on Sunday—have drawn widespread criticism from various political parties. Speaking at a felicitation event in Kochi to mark his 30 years as SNDP general secretary, Natesan said he would continue to speak about social justice and 'the neglect of the backward Ezhava community", despite opposition from minority leaders. State Cooperation Minister V N Vasavan, who inaugurated the event, praised Natesan for his 'historic achievements" during his tenure. 'Only in a secular society can people of all faiths—and those with none—function democratically," it added. The LDF government's welfare programmes aim to address the challenges faced by the poorer sections across all communities, it further said. The Communist Party has drawn inspiration from Kerala's renaissance movements and has worked to ensure social justice, the statement added. The SNDP, founded by Sree Narayana Guru, upheld the principle that the essence of all religions is the same. 'The organisation should move forward in a manner that protects secularism. Anyone can raise the issues of a particular community, but not in a way that incites religious animosity," the statement stressed. Earlier in the day, Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan also strongly criticised Natesan's remarks, stating that any attempt to divide society must be opposed. Speaking in Kochi, Satheesan said Natesan's comments 'went against the very ideals upheld" by SNDP founder Sree Narayana Guru. 'Community leaders should avoid statements that create divisions among people," he claimed. Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty also condemned Natesan's 'unwarranted" remarks against minorities. He urged the state government to examine Natesan's statements and take appropriate action. 14 IEDs planted by Maoists recovered from Jharkhand forest
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Chaibasa, July 20 (PTI) Security forces on Sunday recovered 14 IEDs planted by Maoists from the forest area on the border of West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharswan districts in Jharkhand, police said. West Singhbhum SP Rakesh Ranjan said he had received an intelligence input that explosives in large quantities were planted in a forest area on the border of the Toklo police station area in West Singhbhum and the Kuchai police station area in Seraikela-Kharswan to disrupt the ongoing anti-Naxal operation. A joint team was formed with personnel of CRPF, Jharkhand Jaguar and armed police of the two districts, he said. During the operation, security personnel recovered 14 IEDs, each weighing 2 kgs, from the forest, he added. They have also recovered a country-made hand grenade, ammonium nitrate powder, and a steel container. All the explosives were defused by the bomb disposal squad on the spot, the SP said. Key changes proposed in Income Tax Bill to be tabled in Monsoon session
MUMBAI: The Income Tax Bill, 2025 is all set to be presented in parliament as the Monsoon session begins on Monday. The bill, which was tabled in Lok Sabha in February this year, will be presented again in parliament after being vetted by a select committee. The Committee made 285 suggestions in the Bill at its meeting on 16 July. While most of the changes proposed were minor in nature – change in language and correction of typos – three key amendments suggested by the committee. The committee has advised against the provision that would have disallowed income tax refunds if returns were submitted beyond the stipulated due date. This change offers considerable relief to taxpayers. A proposal has also been made to bring back provisions enabling the tax department to issue a nil withholding tax certificate for specific payments. This clause was initially omitted from the draft bill, which previously only permitted certificates for low TDS deductions. The 31-member select committee, which was headed by BJP leader Baijayant Panda, has also recommended the restoration of Section 80M allowing deduction in case of inter-corporate dividends. Its earlier removal had sparked concerns about potential double taxation within complex corporate structures. Reports indicate the government has accepted this recommendation, offering substantial relief to businesses. According to Gaurav Makhijani, Head of Tax (North India and Gujarat) at Roedl and Partner, The Select Committee has taken into account most of the significant concerns raised and has sought to address areas that were causing ambiguity.
