#SHOWBIZ: College thriller gets remake with darker story
Viewed by millions on the small screen, this hit series saw popular Indonesian actor Randy Pangalila play an angry young man named Gibbs, who with his buddies Ray, KJ and Troll, were suspected of driving a depressed female college mate to suicide by hanging.
'Gantung' is back by popular demand, now as a 2-hour feature film with a new cast.
Retitled as 'Gantung: Musketeer Code', it stays true to the series and is once again set in an elite school somewhere in Kuala Lumpur.
Now directed by Nadia herself instead of Shamyl Othman, the film is also produced by Neddo Works, her company.
At the recent preview of 'Gantung' in GSC Mid Valley Megamall, Nadia said that she chose to make the novel and television series into a movie as a result of strong feedback from netizens over the years.
"It wasn't easy to get this off the ground but thank God I did. This was achieved through a crowdfundiong effort, and we successfully raised RM200,000 to make the movie back in 2020."
DELAYED
Sadly, the movie was delayed for three years because of the Covid-19 pandemic and its subsequent Movement Control Order (MCO).
"Filming was done in December 2023 and took a month," said Nadia.
She added that while many viewers might not have caught the series on television, moviegoers need not watch it before catching the new movie.
"Both stories stand on their own, just that some of the actors are different and the way the story is told is different, too," said Nadia.
YOUNG CAST
The movie, which opened in cinemas on June 5, boasts a star-studded young cast from Malaysia and Indonesia, with lots of established Malaysian stars in cameo or supporting roles.
It stars Ikmal Amry, Ben Amir, Hafreez Adam, Brandon Salim, Shazia Rozaini, Gita Sucia, Taufiq Hanafi, Nelissa Nizam, Bront Palarae, Datin Sofia Jane, Chew Kin Wah, Sangeeta Krishnasamy, Sharifah Sofia, Amanda Ang, Anas Ridzuan, Nadiya Nisaa and Siti Saleha Baharom.
Nadia said that there will be sequels to 'Gantung' as it is the first of her three novels in the Gantung series which she penned more than a decade ago.
"And the ending of the movie clearly shows that the story of Ray, Gibbs, KJ and Troll will be continued," she said, describing it as a youth-oriented story, part murder mystery, part horror, and part teen soap opera.
SOLOZ
Ikmal, who has won praise for his role as the villain in Syafiq Yusof's 'Soloz' early this year, said that while he is the hero this time, he is still an angry young man with family issues.
"I'm Ray, the de facto storyteller here, and while he's once again angsty, I like such characters as they are realistic."
Ben said that he was the "odd man out" amongst the four main characters, as Randy had chosen not to reprise his role as "alpha male" Gibbs.
"I was asked not to follow Randy's version of Gibbs and instead portray the 'taiko' of the gang my own way," he said, adding that his version of Gibbs was less aggressive and more subtle than Randy's.
JOCK
Hafreez said that he was happy to reprise his role as Troll, because the "jock" among the boys was both funny and tragic.
"He's very much a poor, little rich boy. He masks his pain behind a somewhat arrogant image," he said.
Nadia said that the story was basically about Ray's friendship with his childhood and college buddies and how he is protective of them, even if they break the law and cause harm to others in the same college.
"They always have his back, and vice-versa, and they live by this principle which they nickname as The Musketeer Code," she said.
FEMINIST
Shazia, who plays the main female character Farah, said that she was the "school feminist" who campaigns against sexism.
"However, Farah also lives a contradictory life, as she is in a relationship with a seemingly sexist boyfriend Gibbs," she said.
BROTHER
Nadia said that the key cameos in the movie are Sofia, Chew and Sangeetha as teachers in the college, Bront as the brother of the dead girl who demands justice, Siti Saleha as the manager of the school cafe and Amanda as a concerned parent.
Nadia said that the story might be a little confusing thanks to the flashbacks, but that was beauty of a thought-provoking script and novel.
"It is not meant to be a straightforward tale, but one where each character has his or her own story to tell and his or her owh demons to face," she said.
"At the heart of it all, is the timeless message of being honest with oneself and being a true friend despite life's challenges and tragedies."

#SHOWBIZ: Siti enthrals 4,600 concertgoers at Genting Highlands show
GENTING HIGHLANDS: Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin's enduring star power was undeniable last night as approximately 4,600 concertgoers packed Resorts World Genting's Arena of Stars for her performance. Despite having staged three concerts last year, including one with Indonesian singer Judika in December, fans clearly can't get enough of her, as evidenced by the sold-out venue. Siti graciously thanked her devoted fans who have supported her from the start, while also acknowledging those attending for the very first time. "I'd like to thank everyone for coming, especially those who are watching me for the first time. I hope this won't be the first and the last, okay?" she told the cheering crowd between songs. Among the attendees were 14 fans who had travelled all the way from Medan, Indonesia, specifically for the concert. Last night's concert was the first of a two-night engagement titled 'Violet Skies: Dato' Sri Siti Nurhaliza Live In Arena Of Stars', with another performance scheduled for this evening. During the slightly over two-hour show, 46-year-old Siti performed 26 songs. She was joined on stage by special guests, starting with her nephew, Ahmad Daiyan, followed by Noh Salleh from the band Hujan. Their duet began with the Indonesian classic 'Bengawan Solo', followed by 'Rahsia Tuhan', before they launched into Hujan's upbeat hit, 'Pagi Yang Gelap'. Paying homage to the Nineties' rock era, Siti also delivered three popular rock numbers: BumiPutra Rockers' 1999 hit 'Seribu Tahun Takkan Mungkin', Fotograf's 1992 song 'Di Alam Fana Cintamu', and Medicine's 1999 track 'Tika Dan Saat Ini'. These renditions were met with thunderous applause from the audience.

Meet Malaysia's latest pop yeh-yeh group LEV, a group of three unleashes Malaysia's own-styled song in "Aku Bukan Bosan"
New music group, LEV, has released their debut single titled 'Aku Bukan Bosan', which is now available on all digital streaming platforms. The trio who got together in 2022 have aims following the footsteps of the Malaysian top pop yeh-yeh band Masdo. They are also singing under the Empayar Masdo label and are also now considered the group Masdo's top protege. Masdo are currently Malaysia's top pop yeh-yeh band since the heydays of the 60s and they made an excellent foray into Indonesia. Just like Masdo, LEV are presenting their music based on Malaysia's 60s pop genre and composed according to current tastes. LEV consists of three members: Leo Azman (vocalist, composer, and lyricist), Riz (guitarist) and Kecik (bass player,) and they are aiming to make a big impression in the Malaysian music industry. 'Aku Bukan Bosan' was entirely composed by Leo Azman, while production, mixing and mastering were completed by Andi, a member of the Indonesian band Fourtwnty. The recording process was carried out at Bijanfx Studio, involving five draft phases over two weeks before the final version was finalized. This song raises the theme of the sacrifices of men who are far from their families to earn a living. It touches on the issue of trust in long-distance relationships and the misunderstandings that often arise due to time and communication constraints. According to Andi, as the producer, this song brings a narrative that is close to the reality of society. 'We want this song to represent the voices of those who are rarely heard. Not everyone is good at expressing themselves, but music can speak for them,' he said. Before the official launch, LEV introduced this song to the public through several performances in conjunction with the 10-Year Journey to Masdo, which took place in several locations around Selangor & Kuala Lumpur. The performances served as an initial platform to introduce LEV's musical identity to a wider audience. The launch of 'Aku Bukan Bosan' also opens a new chapter for LEV as a newcomer group that presents works based on reality, without excessive dramatic elements. With a simple musical approach and lyrics based on real experiences, LEV is seen as one of the new names that deserves attention. AKU BUKAN BOSAN (quick notes - trivia) 1. "Aku Bukan Bosan" -- Composer & Lyricist: Leo Azman 2. This single is the debut work from LEV since their establishment on May 13, 2022. This song highlights the story of the sacrifice of a man who was forced to leave his family temporarily to find a livelihood to support his loved ones. It is an expression of the heart that asks for trust to be given, not doubt. Not because of looking for another love, but because of the determination to ensure that every family's dream can be fulfilled. The group's message for fans: "For the fighters out there, continue your struggle. Never give up. And for the wives, trust your husbands. If messages are not returned, if calls are not picked up — know that they are fighting, not bored." 3. The lyrics of this song are inspired by the reality of men who are forced to stay away from their families to find a livelihood, not because of boredom, but because of responsibility.

Malaysian devotional music group Inteam makes an impact in Algeria muusic festival
NEW DELHI (Bernama): Malaysian devotional music group Inteam captivated audiences at the 11th Constantine International Chanting Festival in Algiers, Algeria, bridging cultural and linguistic divides during their debut North African tour. Dressed in traditional Malay attire, the group delivered a soulful performance that stood out among nine foreign ensembles - including those from Oman, Tunisia, Belgium, Jordan, Senegal, Syria, Tanzania, and Bosnia - invited to the prestigious festival held in the historic city of Constantine from June 25 to 30. "Their traditional Malay attire sparked a keen interest and admiration among the international audience. This act of cultural diplomacy added a special touch to their artistic presentation," Malaysian Ambassador to Algeria, Rizany Irwan Muhamad Mazlan, told Bernama on Sunday. Inteam was among the nine foreign groups invited to perform at the chanting festival (Mahrajan Al Inshad Al Duwali) in the northeastern city of Constantine. The event also featured seven Algerian teams and participants from Oman. Inteam described their first tour of North Africa as a journey transcending linguistic, national and cultural boundaries through nasyid, a form of Islamic vocal music. Their participation in the prestigious festival not only strengthens Malaysia's cultural representation abroad, but also opens doors for greater collaboration on future international artistic platforms. "Their presence was a testament to the role of Islamic performing arts in fostering unity and mutual respect across cultures," Rizany said. Youth training workshops and seminars focused on preserving musical heritage and promoting intercultural dialogue were also held during the festival. - Bernama
