Omar Abdullah slams local media silence over detention of elected leaders on Martyrs' Day
The administration of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha denied permission for any event to mark the anniversary of the July 13, 1931 killings in Kashmir during a protest against Hari Singh, ruler of the then princely state of Jammu and Kashmir under British paramountcy.
The administration also imposed strict restrictions in parts of Srinagar and warned of strict action against anyone who tried to proceed towards the Martyrs' graveyard, the resting place of 22 people who were killed during the protest.
The Chief Minister after arriving from Delhi last evening alleged that he and the elected representatives were "locked up" and termed it as the 'tyranny of the unelected' in Jammu and Kashmir. The CM was also allegedly barred from visiting Martyrs graveyard.
Taking to social media today, Omar expressed deep disappointment that the majority of the local newspapers have buried the news story on their house detention.
'Take a look at our local newspapers -- both from Jammu & from Srinagar, English & vernacular. You'll be able to distinguish the cowards from the ones with guts. The cowards have completely buried the fact that the entire elected government was locked up yesterday along with most elected representatives. The newspapers with some guts have put it on the front page. Shame on the sellouts who buried the story. I hope the size of the envelope was worth it,' Omar said on X.
There was no immediate response from media bodies over the Chief Minister's remarks.

Bihar advocates panel protests lawyer's murder, demands arrest of culprits
Patna, July 14 (UNI) The Bihar Young Advocates Welfare Committee today demanded that the government immediately arrest the criminals who shot dead an advocate Jitendra Kumar Mehta. In a meeting held here at Patna Civil Court under the chairmanship of committee president Sudhir Kumar Sinha, the lawyers also called for a speedy trial to ensure swift justice and strict punishment for the culprits. Sinha said that the members unanimously demanded that the government pay Rs 50 lakh as compensation to the deceased advocate's family and a government job for an eligible dependent. Additionally, the committee has demanded the implementation of the Advocate Protection and Compensation Act, he informed. Meanwhile, another lawyers' organisation, Khula Manch, held a day-long sit-in protest near Gate No. 1 of the Patna Civil Court, demanding the immediate arrest of the killers and compensation for the victim's family. BJP MLAs protest in Jammu over compulsory Urdu for naib tehsildar posts, demand rollback
File photo (PTI) JAMMU: BJP legislators on Monday staged a protest outside the civil secretariat in Jammu, demanding revocation of a government order mandating Urdu as a compulsory language for naib tehsildar recruitment examination in Jammu and Kashmir. The MLAs arrived at the secretariat in the morning and staged a dharna, terming the order discriminatory and detrimental to the interests of Jammu's youth. Carrying placards highlighting injustice against Jammu's youth, Dogras and other official languages of the Union Territory, they raised slogans against the government and CM Omar Abdullah, accusing his party, National Conference, of trying to create unrest in the region. Speaking to the media, Sunil Sharma said this policy amounted to grave injustice against deserving candidates who are otherwise qualified but are being excluded based on language preference. Sharma said 14 BJP MLAs had even met CM Omar on the issue. 'His approach was positive, but no action has been taken yet, and tomorrow is the last day to apply for the posts.
