In a region where economic ties transcend national borders, cross-border remittances have long been the financial backbone of both personal and business relationships. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), where billions of dollars move annually across countries, linking families, businesses, and entire economies. Yet despite their essential role, cross-border payments remain burdened by legacy infrastructure, regulatory complexity, and inefficiencies that no longer align with the expectations of today's digital-first consumers.
According to the World Bank, the GCC is one of the most active remittance corridors in the world, and the demand for faster, more transparent, and more flexible payment solutions is only growing. In this evolving landscape, Visa is at the forefront of innovation. Salima Gutieva, Vice President and Country Manager for Visa UAE, offers insight into how solutions like Visa Direct and Visa+ are helping bridge longstanding gaps in the system, turning what was once a slow, opaque process into a seamless, user-centric experience.
Question:
The GCC region is among the most active remittance corridors globally, with billions of dollars transferred annually. Cross-border payments have been described as both a lifeline and a bottleneck. Why does something so essential remain so complex?
Answer:
It's a fair question. Moving money across borders should be as easy as sending a message, but legacy infrastructure, inconsistent regulations, and patchy connectivity make it harder than it needs to be. If you're a family trying to get funds to loved ones, or a business managing supplier payments across countries, delays and high fees are more than an inconvenience. They're a real strain. That's the gap we're trying to close.
Question:
The global payments space is becoming increasingly interconnected. From a user's point of view, how does that growing reach affect the way people send and receive money?
Answer:
It's a great question, and it really comes down to optionality. What people want is to choose how they send and receive funds, be it through a card, a bank account, or a mobile wallet and know it will work smoothly. That's where Visa Direct comes in. It enables that flexibility by connecting to more than 11 billion endpoints globally, whether cards, bank accounts, or digital wallets. It's designed to give people access on their terms, through the channels they already use and trust. So, for someone in the UAE, for instance, who wants to send money to a family member abroad, that could mean choosing the method that works best for both sides, without worrying about whether it'll land or how long it'll take. The goal is simplicity without compromise.
Question:
You've talked about flexibility and ease of use becoming the norm. What's made that shift possible in cross-border payments?
Answer:
That shift is being driven by a combination of evolving user expectations and foundational infrastructure improvements. Speed is just one part of it. Today, people want transparency, knowing when their money will arrive, and confidence that it won't get stuck in a multi-day process. We're enabling near real-time transfers across more than 190 countries and territories, but more importantly, we're making that process feel human. In the UAE, for example, many consumers now expect to send money using only a phone number, thanks to tools like Visa+. That kind of progress matters. It reduces errors, builds trust, and reshapes how we think about cross-border payments.
Question:
You mentioned Visa+ as an example of this evolution. What kind of impact is it having on how people think about sending money?
Answer:
Alias-based transfers are about ease and trust. They're particularly useful in regions like the GCC, where people are often sending money to friends, relatives, or partners within the same network. We started with UAE, Bahrain, and Qatar and we're seeing strong interest across other corridors. Eventually, we want this to be a standard across key remittance flows - send money to a name or phone number, not a string of account digits.
Question:
With evolving expectations and a digitally fluent population, how do you see remittance services adapting in the UAE?
Answer:
Money that moves quickly moves economies. Over half of intra-GCC remittances go toward business activities, from purchasing goods to real estate deals. When those transfers are slow or expensive, business slows too. But when they're fast, reliable, and affordable, they create momentum. They encourage trade, investment, and deeper economic ties across the region. In that sense, seamless payments aren't just a financial issue. They're a strategic advantage.
In the UAE, we're seeing remittance services shift toward greater speed, flexibility, and responsiveness to individual user needs. It's not just about faster transactions. It's about smarter ones. Consumers want the ability to schedule transfers, receive real-time updates, and adjust payments on the go. Mobile-first platforms that offer intuitive interfaces and language preferences are becoming the norm. For UAE consumers - especially younger and digitally fluent users - the expectation is that sending money should feel like any other digital interaction – quick, secure, and controlled by the user. Regulation is also playing a role in enabling these innovations, helping create a space where trust and ease can coexist.
What kind of ripple effects do you think that will have – on people's daily lives or on the broader financial system?
Even small improvements can go a long way. When sending money to a friend or supplier in another country feels as simple as paying for coffee, it changes what people expect from financial services. These moments build resilience, strengthen relationships, and open up new opportunities both for individuals and the broader economy. That's the impact we're aiming for.

Ten years ago, UAE motorists woke up to a day when the government removed subsidies on fuel. It was a weekend — and with the deregulation of oil prices — pump prices were hiked by 24 per cent, aligning with global rates at that time. The new petrol and diesel prices were actually announced by the UAE Ministry of Energy three days earlier, on July 28, 2015. The most commonly used Special 95 petrol saw a 24 per cent increase from Dh1.72 during the subsidised oil price regime to Dh2.14, for a 42 fils hike per litre. Anticipating the increase, several petrol stations were abuzz with activity as drivers queued up to fill up their tanks before the hike came into play. Khaleej Times captured long lines of cars waiting at petrol stations in Dubai and Sharjah. Mixed emotions were also evident at petrol stations that day. As Khaleej Times reported, some motorists supported the move, while others felt they 'were not given enough information about the reasons for the hike.' 'I really think it's fair. The price is based on the fair market. I don't see any problem with this at all,' said one Dubai resident that day. While another one retorted, 'Of course, this petrol price hike is going to be a big problem for me. That extra cost adds up each time.' UAE motorists were used to enjoying cheap oil prices and some drivers who spoke to Khaleej Times expressed surprise at the rate of the increase. 'That seems like a lot. This will surely have repercussions,' noted a Pakistani expat who also anticipated an increase in taxi fares. Another Dubai driver said he believed the hike in petrol prices would primarily affect the large SUVs that are ubiquitous on the streets of the UAE. 'For me and my smaller car, this is okay,' noted the Indian expat who added: 'The problem here is that Dubai is a place where many, many people drive big cars. They will be the people who will end up having to pay much more.' Azhar Zia ur-Rehman, a long-time resident of the UAE, meanwhile, urged residents to not overreact to the announcement. 'Let us look at it logically instead of emotionally,' he said. 'The two major expenses for a family here are accommodation and education. If the government can bring these down, no one will mind paying the increased price for petrol.' Some residents also told Khaleej Times that a 24 per cent hike in fuel price 'is okay long as salaries rise faster than before.' On the brighter side, the price of diesel drastically went down that day — from Dh2.90 to Dh2.05 per litre. Traders reacted positively to the revised rate. On another note, Thomas Edelmann, founder and managing director of RoadSafetyUAE, said residents should treat the oil price deregulation as an opportunity to reflect on the link between fuel consumption and driving behaviour in the UAE. He said higher fuel prices usually lead to increased efforts from motorists to display a more economical behaviour. 'This usually results in a less fuel-demanding driving style, carpooling, avoiding of unnecessary trips, and a shift to use of public transportation,' he added. Simply put, fewer cars on the road means less congestion and less stress. 'It is fair to assume improved driving behaviour will not only impact our wallets, it could have a positive impact on road safety too,' Edelmann noted. Since the UAE deregulated petrol prices in 2015 and aligned them with global rates, the rates are revised at the end of every month. Fuel prices for August 2025 were announced on July 31. Super 98 petrol is Dh2.69 per litre, as compared to Dh2.70 last month. Special 95 petrol is Dh2.57 per litre, a neglible .05 fil increase to July's rate of Dh2.58. Diesel saw a slight increase at Dh2.78 per litre, compared to last month's Dh2.63, but still comfortably below the Dh2.90 per litre price 10 years ago, when oil prices were heavily subsidised.

Some shoppers in Ras Al Khaimah have reported being charged higher prices at the cashier than what was displayed on store shelves, prompting the Department of Economic Development to issue warnings and take action against offending retailers. 'For example, a product displayed for Dh10 might scan at Dh11.50. Once a consumer submits the complaint, we investigate and contact the store. In some cases, we issue fines according to the law,' Nasra Mohamed Almerri, an officer in the Commercial Control and Consumer Protection division, told Khaleej Times. These complaints highlight the importance of the department's consumer awareness campaigns, which aim to ensure shoppers know their rights. Almerri encouraged residents to check prices carefully, keep receipts especially for products under warranty, and verify that items are within their expiration dates. As part of its efforts to raise consumer awareness, the Department of Economic Development launched the 'Happy Shopper' campaign to promote responsible shopping habits in Ras Al Khaimah. The initiative ran over two weeks and involved students from local summer activity centres, including those affiliated with the Ras Al Khaimah Youth Centre and the Ras Al Khaimah Cultural Centre. The campaign took place across two locations, Karama Market and Al Khaleej Market in Ras Al Khaimah, where students participated in activities aimed at educating shoppers about their rights, the importance of checking prices, and keeping receipts. Check product prices Children were educated on the importance of checking product prices to ensure they match the cashier and keeping receipts to protect their rights in case of returns or exchanges. During the campaign, students observed shoppers at checkout counters and guided them to verify prices before and after payment. Stores rewarded vigilant shoppers who double-checked their purchases with small gifts. Fahad Ahmed, an 11-year-old participant, said he learned to check product expiration dates, understand quality indicators, and always take a receipt. 'I now know that the date and quality of the product are important. I also learned to take the receipt so that no one can trick me, and I can return the item if needed,' he said. Fahad also gained hands-on experience comparing prices and assessing product value during his visit to the drinks and snacks sections. The campaign was organised in partnership with the Ras Al Khaimah Police General Command, represented by the Community Protection Department, and the Environment Protection and Development Authority, highlighting a collaborative effort to foster safer and more responsible consumer behavior. Environmental awareness Fatima Taleb, from the Environment Protection and Development Authority's Awareness Department, explained that shoppers are encouraged to also check expiry dates, keep their receipts, and use reusable bags instead of single-use plastic. 'Our role is to monitor whether shoppers bring their multi-use bags and avoid buying single-use plastic products, in line with the emirate's vision to become completely free of plastic,' she said. The DED carries out inspections and runs awareness initiatives, both in-store and online, to inform the public. Al Marri emphasised the importance of consumers feeling secure when shopping, encouraging them to reach out if they encounter any problems with products, receipts, or pricing. She also noted that while some consumers stick to essential purchases, many are influenced by promotional offers to buy more than they need. The economic department hopes its campaigns will not only protect shoppers from overcharging but also encourage smarter, more intentional spending.

The immersive experience brings to life the magical universe in the book and film series. It has already attracted 3.7 million visitors worldwide – making it a must for Potter fans in the Emirates. Whether you are a lifelong Gryffindor or a curious Muggle, here is what to expect when entering the world of Harry Potter in Abu Dhabi. Dress up for photo opportunities Harry Potter fans are some of the most passionate in the world, and the exhibition awards such dedication early on. To start the experience, guests are given an armband and asked to sign up for an account, adding in key fandom details such as their favourite Hogwarts School house, magic wand and chosen Patronus – akin to a spirit animal or guardian.
