What Yoane Wissa would offer Nottingham Forest – on and off the pitch
Yoane Wissa has occasionally been spotted cycling with his family around the streets of Brentford, close to the Gtech Community Stadium. He likes to make visits to the cinema, even if he has to keep his head down to avoid being recognised. He is a down-to-earth character, a family man. And if Nottingham Forest get their way, you might soon spot him pedalling along the banks of the Trent or buying popcorn before hitting the big screens at The Cornerhouse. Advertisement The 28-year-old's character is one of the reasons Forest are keen on signing the DR Congo international. But it is far from the only one. Wissa has been on Forest's radar since last January, when they had a £25million offer for him rejected. And he has been one of their primary transfer targets this summer, but particularly since the £52m sale of Anthony Elanga to Newcastle was confirmed. He is not a direct replacement for Elanga, but he would be an important addition to the attacking options at a time when the club could lose Morgan Gibbs-White. The forward remains the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur, despite Forest alleging that the London club had made an illegal approach for their most influential player. Since joining Brentford from Lorient in August 2021 for a fee of £8.5m, Wissa has transitioned from left-winger to central striker and scored 19 goals in 35 Premier League appearances last season. Despite having only one year left on his contract, with an option to extend for a further year, Brentford valued him at £50m. That versatility is a key attribute while Wissa is also a nimble dribbler and excellent finisher who scores a variety of goals with both feet. He turns 29 in September which slightly goes against Forest's desire to invest in players who will improve in value and quality. But Chris Wood is the prime example of how older players can still be high-value signings. The striker was 31 when he joined on loan in January 2023, before a handful of appearances activated a clause ensuring the move would be made permanent for £15m. It took him time to prove his quality — but he has done so emphatically, scoring 36 goals in 82 appearances since that permanent move was activated in the summer of 2023, including 20 in the Premier League last season. Forest paid for proven quality in Wood and the belief is that they would be doing so again with Wissa, who has scored 31 Premier League goals over the last two seasons with Brentford. Advertisement Wissa was initially an impact sub when he first joined, but became a starter as he adjusted to the physicality of the league. He has evolved into a player who is much better off the ball and defensively; he has become more tactically adept. He is regarded as being a good character within the dressing room. During Thomas Frank's tenure as manager, a tradition developed where large numbers of the coaching staff would do circuit training sessions together in the morning and Wissa would occasionally join in with those, to help keep his fitness levels topped up, but also because of the social element. Among the squad, his best friend is Bryan Mbeumo, with whom he now finds himself intertwined in something of a transfer puzzle. Mbeumo remains a target for Manchester United and Brentford do not wish to lose both players, having already seen manager Frank depart for Tottenham — who are also keen on both men. Only one of them is likely to be sold, which puts pressure on all of the clubs involved to get a deal done quickly for their target. Wissa can drop deep to hold up the ball and link-up play while his development has seen him become a genuine penalty-box forward, as demonstrated by the increased share of touches he takes in these areas. Wissa gets into better shooting positions than any other centre-forward in the Premier League with an average xG per shot last season of 0.23. Forest already possess one outstanding finisher in the form of Wood, who averaged 0.26 goals per shot last season (Wissa was not far behind with 0.21 goals per shot). They have also signed the Brazilian international Igor Jesus from Botafogo, who they have high hopes for. While Taiwo Awoniyi — who was a key figure as Forest secured survival in their first season back in the Premier League in 2022-23 — will hope to recover from an abdominal injury to stake his own challenge for an opportunity. Forest also hold an interest in Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey. The attacking midfielder is more of a winger or No 10, although he would add to the creativity in the Forest ranks in the final third of the pitch. Wissa's record is partly a reflection of Brentford's approach under Frank, where the focus was on patiently working the ball into central, high-value areas rather than taking speculative efforts from distance. But it also speaks to Wissa's innate poacher's instincts, his ability to escape the clutches of his marker and arrive at exactly the right moment. Advertisement That's not to say he spends games loitering around the box waiting for chances. Wissa is a key cog in how Brentford progress play with his intelligent off-ball runs. Tracking data from SkillCorner can help us to quantify that movement, comparing the frequency with which he makes specific off-ball runs with strikers across Europe's top seven leagues. As we can see, Wissa is much more inclined to come short and support build-up rather than hang off the last defender looking to get in behind. His tendency to make selfless overlapping and underlapping runs has been key in dragging defenders away, often allowing Mbeumo extra space to cut inside and get off a shot. He also won more second balls last season than any other forward (25). He may be lightweight but makes up for it with tenacity and work rate. Wissa would bring the kind of versatility that Nuno Espirito Santo likes; an ability to challenge Wood or Jesus for their place in the centre or to slot into a wider role, if required. He would also add an experienced head in a group that Forest hope to add more youthful additions to this summer. He might not fit into the mould of many of Forest's signings, but there would be a huge amount of logic to it, if they can get a deal over the line.
