Outrage after cat fur clothing sold in Australia
An investigation by Collective Fashion Justice and Australia's Animal Justice Party found that children's vests containing cat fur were sold while being labelled as fake fur or sheep wool.
Forensic testing revealed the vest sold by fashion brand Suttons UGG was made of domestic cat fur and rabbit fur. However, the vest was labelled as "100 per cent Australian sheepskin or wool".
Similarly, two beanies with pom-poms sold at a Queen Victoria market in central Melbourne were found to be falsely labelled as 100 per cent "acrylic". A test by British fibre analysis firm Microtex revealed they were made from fox and raccoon dog fur.
The discoveries have led to calls from animal rights groups and the Animal Justice Party for a statewide ban on the sale of all animal fur. The Australian Fashion Council, earlier this yea,r banned the use of fur, wild-animal skins, and wild feathers from runways.
"Every Victorian would be shocked to know that they could go to the store and accidentally buy something made from cat fur, when they may have a cat at home themselves," Collective Fashion Justice founder Emma Hakansson said.
Suttons UGG, which has retail stores in Sydney and Melbourne, in a statement to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, admitted the label on the vest was "wrong".
A spokesperson told the broadcaster they had been informed by the manufacturer that the vest was made from a "kind of special fur", and the company could not "100 per cent confirm" whether that included cat.
The Australian government banned the import and export of cat and dog fur in 2004. In 2020, a Consumer Affairs Victoria investigation into the mislabelling of fur products found that every product independently tested by the taskforce was wrongly labelled.
Shortly after, fur sellers were issued warnings.
Georgie Purcell, the Animal Justice Party MP for Northern Victoria, has called for the sale of fur to be banned.
"The message from the community couldn't be clearer – fur is out of fashion. Whether it's cat, dog, rabbit, or fox – the one constant is that it's all cruel," she said.
"The time for regulation is done. The only thing left to do is to completely ban fur, just as other jurisdictions around the world have already done."

Producers address Bondi Rescue cancellation rumours - after domestic violence arrest of lifeguard Andrew 'Reidy' Reid
The producers of Bondi Rescue have rubbished claims that the series has been cancelled. The Channel 10 reality series has been on hiatus for 2025, but will be around for 'many years to come', producers insisted on Wednesday. Michael Cordell, creative director and co-founder of production company CJZ, told the Daily Telegraph in a statement: 'Season 18 was widely regarded as the best we've ever made and there's still plenty of important stories to tell about Bondi's professional lifeguards and the extraordinary work they do.' Cordell also responded to comments made by lifeguard Andrew 'Reidy' Reid that seemed to imply that the series may be facing the axe. 'Reidy has been off-duty for some time and isn't privy to the show's financing. We love Reidy, but he isn't best placed to be making announcements about Bondi Rescue's future,' Cordell said. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Bondi Rescue has aired on Channel Ten since 2006, clocking in an impressive 18 seasons. It follows the daily lives and death-defying adventures of lifeguards tasked with protecting Bondi Beach's swimmers and surfers. Whispers of a cancellation come after Andrew 'Reidy' Reid faced domestic violence charges late last year. In December, the star avoided a conviction for putting his hand on a woman's neck 'in a fit of alcoholic rage'. The lifeguard faced Hornsby Local Court after pleading not guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of common assault. According to the NCA Newswire, Magistrate Daniel Reiss dismissed both counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. However, he was found guilty of pushing a woman's neck for up to five seconds in 'an aggressive act that amounted to common assault' without proceeding to a conviction. One assault charge related to an alleged incident in November 2022, while the other allegedly took place in January 2024, over a 15-minute period. A visibly upset Reid was said to have told the court 'that's not the kind of man I am' as he addressed the allegation. Both counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm were dismissed, though Reid was found to have made a 'fairly clear admission of assault' to his counsellor. Reid was handed a 12-month good behaviour bond after being found guilty of pushing the woman's neck for up to five seconds. He will also remain subject to a two-year apprehended violence order taken out in the woman's name. Reid is best known for having been a star on Bondi Rescue since the popular series first aired in 2006. He's patrolled the iconic beach for more than two decades. Last year, Reid made headlines when he rushed to the aid of injured victims stabbed by Joel Cauchi in the Westfield Bondi Junction rampage that claimed six lives. While Reid is no stranger to life and death situations, he admitted he had never before experienced anything so traumatic. 'I have seen some pretty gnarly stuff after working for 20 years on the beach, but nothing like this,' he said.

We confront Lanlan Yang - the wealthy heiress, 23, with TWO Rolls-Royces accused of smashing into Kyle Sandilands' chauffeur - and ask her about his 'missing' body part
The wealthy heiress behind the wheel of a Tiffany-blue Rolls-Royce that smashed into a celebrity chauffeur, leaving him with horrific injuries, has reported for bail dressed head-to-toe in a designer outfit. The Daily Mail confronted LanLan Yang, 23, as she reported to Rose Bay Police station in Sydney 's east on Wednesday, dressed in a Chane l outfit, five days after smashing her $1million car into a Mercedes van driven by Kyle Sandilands ' chauffeur. The young woman was allegedly drunk behind the wheel of her Rolls-Royce Cullinan in the early hours of Saturday morning when she crashed into George Plassaras' van - writing off her car and leaving him hospitalised. Sandilands was not inside at the time. Yang was flanked by a minder as she was grilled on video about how she would plead to the charges she faces, how she can afford two Rolls-Royces and if she had any reaction to Mr Plassaras's admission he had 'lost' his hip. The crash left Mr Plassaras with a broken spine, broken ribs, a ruptured spleen and diaphragm, a torn open abdomen, two broken hips and two broken femurs. Speaking from the ICU on Wednesday's Kyle & Jackie O show, Plassaras revealed that he has a lengthy road to recovery. 'I've got no right hip,' Mr Plassaras said. 'It's totally gone'. However, Yang did not acknowledge her alleged victim's horrific injuries when told by our reporter. Instead, she kept her head bowed as she returned to her own chauffeur-driven minivan - a far cry from the two luxury vehicles she currently owns. The Daily Mail previously revealed Yang also owns an unregistered white Rolls Royce Ghost Convertible parked at her Vaucluse penthouse. Her garage uses a car lift that can only take 3,000kg, Her garage uses a car lift that can only take 3,000kg, which is likely why she opted to park her other luxury vehicle - that costs more than many people's houses - on her residential street instead of keeping it undercover. While very little is known about Yang or how she obtained her substantial wealth, neighbours from her upmarket building described her as 'polite' and 'shy' when they were approached. They also added the young resident, who occupies the building's prized penthouse apartment, decorated her car with the mega-exclusive Labubu toys. 'She decorates the front of the car with those Labubus - it's cute,' the neighbour revealed. Another neighbour added she was rarely seen at the property. Sandilands broke his silence about the crash on Monday, describing his chauffeur Mr Plassaras as the 'greatest employee ever'. 'What did [he] say when he was taken away in the ambulance? He asked for his mobile phone so he could do what?' he said. 'This is a guy at 4.30 in the morning after he has been cut out of his vehicle, he's been trapped in his van for an hour, this poor bloke. 'And he asks the ambo: 'Get my phone so I can make sure Kyle's all right for the week.' Mr Plassaras had to be cut from his vehicle before he was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in a stable condition. He could be heard yelling for help inside the crushed vehicle, as emergency crews from NSW Police Rescue and Fire and Rescue NSW worked to free him. The crash was captured on nearby CCTV which appeared to show Yang's luxury SUV allegedly veering into oncoming traffic before the violent collision. Her Rolls-Royce and his Mercedes are being held in a secure lot in Alexandria pending a police investigation. When she was taken to Waverley Police Station following the crash, police allege Yang refused to undergo a breath analysis. She was charged with causing bodily harm by misconduct, being in charge of a motor vehicle and refusing or failing to submit to breath analysis. She was granted conditional bail to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on August 15. She has not entered a plea to the charges. Her bail conditions included that she not drive a car or leave her penthouse between the hours of 8pm and 6am and must report for bail three times a week.
