Search continues for 7 missing after huge explosion at California fireworks factory
Family members gathered near a sheriff's checkpoint about a mile from the blast site in rural Esparto, hoping for news about their loved ones. Syanna Ruiz, who is pregnant, said her boyfriend, 18-year-old Jesus Ramos, was working his first day at the warehouse when the explosion occurred.
'I'm just praying to God that some way, somehow, they're OK,' Ruiz told the Sacramento Bee on Wednesday.
People were urged to avoid the area after the Tuesday night blast, which set off a barrage of fireworks and caused a massive blaze that led to other spot fires and collapsed the building in Yolo County about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Sacramento.
Two people were injured and received medical care, Esparto Fire Chief Curtis Lawrence said at a news conference Wednesday. Lawrence provided no further information other than to say the two were 'OK,' and it wasn't known if the victims worked at the facility.
Emergency crews and investigators were working with the property's owner and monitoring the area using drones to find the missing individuals, said the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire. It was not immediately clear if those missing worked at the warehouse or lived nearby.
The cause of the explosion was under investigation.
In a statement, the management of the business, Devastating Pyrotechnics, thanked law enforcement and emergency personnel for their swift response.
'Our hearts and thoughts are with those we lost, their families, and everyone impacted in our community,' the statement said. 'Our focus will remain on those directly impacted by this tragedy, and we will cooperate fully with the proper authorities in their investigation.'
The property is owned by 'an active pyrotechnic license holder,' Cal Fire said in a statement Wednesday. 'This type of incident is very rare, as facilities like this are required to not only follow our stringent California pyrotechnic requirements, but also federal explosive storage requirements.'
The fire was held at nearly 80 acres (33 hectares) after scorching surrounding agricultural fields, officials said.
Nisa Gutierrez told the Sacramento CBS affiliate KOVR-TV that the blast was so strong it blew open the doors of her home, damaging the door frames. She and her daughter were in their yard and were nearly knocked over as their pony and goats scattered. 'We hear like a big boom, and feel the wave,' Gutierrez said. 'I thought it was a bomb.'
The scene remained hazardous, with explosions continuing into the evening on Wednesday, Cal Fire said in a statement. Crews including a team with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were working to enable safe access to the site 'to conduct recovery operations and bolster investigative efforts for the explosion investigation,' the statement said.
Gov. Gavin Newsom's office said it was tracking what happened and that state ground and air resources were deployed.
'The State Fire Marshal has sent an arson and bomb investigation team, and stands ready to provide additional support as needed,' the governor's office said on the social site X.
Officials in nearby Sutter and Yuba counties announced Wednesday that they were exploring alternatives for Fourth of July celebrations after their fireworks were destroyed in the blast.
'Devastating Pyrotechnics has been a trusted partner and a cherished part of our regional fireworks celebrations,' the Yuba-Sutter officials said in a statement. 'This tragic incident is a sobering reminder of the many hands behind the scenes who help create joy for others.'

Gas station explodes in Rome, injuring at least 9 first responders
ROME (AP) — A gas station exploded early on Friday in southeastern Rome, injuring at least nine people including eight police officers and a firefighter, police and rescuers said. The explosion was heard across the Italian capital shortly after 8 a.m., sending up a huge cloud of dark smoke and fire visible from several areas of the city. Elisabetta Accardo, a spokesperson for the Roman police, said that eight police officers were injured after arriving for rescue operations. River rescuer risked his life to pull boy, man to safety
David Hickey was enjoying an afternoon run along the shore of the Ottawa River on Wednesday when he noticed a commotion in the water near Westboro Beach. "I saw some splashing in the water. Then when I took one of my headphones out, I heard some screaming and there was a bunch of people gathering by the shore," Hickey, 32, told CBC on Thursday. Someone was in trouble about 20 metres from shore. Without pausing to consider his own safety, Hickey jumped into the water and swam out to help. By the time he reached the struggling swimmers — a younger man and a boy — they had both slipped under the surface. Hickey, a physiotherapist who describes himself as "not the strongest swimmer" despite taking a basic lifeguarding course as a kid, managed to grab hold of the boy and began paddling backward backward toward shore. Realizing the man was still in distress, Hickey told him to hang onto the child, then pulled them both to safety. That's when Hickey discovered there had been a third person in the water — the boy's father, 42-year-old Rowell Navarro. Navarro was eventually pulled from the water, but despite extensive resuscitation efforts he was later pronounced dead in hospital. The younger man, identified by police only as a "quick- thinking member of the public," had jumped into the river to save the father and son, and in doing so had nearly drowned himself. Paramedics told CBC they transported the 27-year-old man to hospital in stable condition. "Three of us came in, but the dad stayed in the water until the firefighters found him," Hickey said. "I think [Navarro] used all of his final energy to hand off his kid to the other guy, and he used all of his energy to keep them up until I was able to get out there and help them." Hickey and other bystanders waited with the boy until first responders arrived. The boy was transported to CHEO "as a precaution," paramedics said Wednesday. Hickey said the river is quite shallow in that area until a steep drop-off not far from shore. "That's where the current really gets messy, so you can walk right out and one step later you're kind of just floating. And that's where they got in trouble, I think," he said. On Thursday, passerby Kevin Power, who has lived nearby for 60 years, said the Ottawa River can be deceiving. "Getting out into these currents with the rapids and such, it can really throw you for a loop and shock you and surprise you, and perhaps that's what happened yesterday," Power said. Hickey said he remembered enough from his training to know it would have been dangerous to go back into the river to search for Navarro. "I'm happy I was able to help and make the situation better, obviously. I don't think there's anything much anyone else could have done to help the dad really at that time, I think he was too far gone," he said. Hickey said he has since exchanged a few text messages with Amanda Laflair, Navarro's wife and mother of eight-year-old William, the boy he helped save. "We just want to say thank you to everybody that reached out to us and offered their help and their condolences. It really means a lot to us at this time," Laflair told CBC in a telephone interview Thursday. "And we especially want to thank the bystander that risked their life to save my son."

Explosion at Gas Station Rattles Rome, Booming Across the City
An explosion rocked a gas station in Rome on Friday, leaving several people injured, including eight police officers and a firefighter, officials said. The blast from the explosion was so loud that it was heard across the city. A fuel tank at the gas station, in an eastern neighborhood of the city, exploded around 8:15 on Friday morning, the Rome police said. The station sold liquefied petroleum gas. The cause of the explosion was as yet unknown, Mr. Cari said, and he had no further information about the incident involving the truck. 'We only know that there was an explosion,' Mr. Cari said. After the blast, firefighters were working to douse a blaze that had started behind the station in a parking lot for cars confiscated by the judicial authorities, he added. The explosion did not affect buildings near the gas station, he noted, but residents have been asked to remain inside their homes.
