From explicit messages to groping: What we know about Derek Dixon's sexual harassment lawsuit against Tyler Perry

Time of India18-06-2025
Actor and screenwriter Derek Dixon has filed a $260 million sexual harassment lawsuit against filmmaker Tyler Perry in Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleging a series of unwanted advances, groping incidents, and an alleged attempt by Perry to use professional opportunities to conceal sexual misconduct.
The claims span from 2019 to 2021 and include allegations of sexually explicit messages, coercive behavior, and inappropriate physical contact. Perry's legal team has denied the accusations, calling the lawsuit a 'scam' aimed at financial gain.
In the 46-page complaint, Dixon paints Perry as someone who allegedly believed his power and success could entitle him to whatever he desired — including a secret sexual relationship. 'Mr. Perry sought the one thing his wealth and influence could not purchase — a sexual relationship with a man who would remain silent,' the suit states.
According to the filing, Perry offered Dixon his first acting job in 2019 while Dixon was working at an events company. Later that year, Perry allegedly invited him to his Georgia home, served him drinks, and encouraged him to stay overnight. That evening, Perry reportedly entered Dixon's guest room and began groping him, despite Dixon making it clear he wasn't interested.
The lawsuit claims Perry continued sending sexually explicit texts and became more aggressive when Dixon ignored him. After Dixon joined the cast of Perry's BET series
The Oval
, the alleged harassment intensified. The suit accuses Perry of frequently calling or texting him, referring to him as a personal "pet," and making lewd remarks about his sex life.
Live Events
Dixon's character was initially written to be killed off at the end of the season, but Perry allegedly hinted that his fate could change depending on how he handled their 'relationship.' The suit claims Perry warned Dixon not to speak about their interactions with anyone on set.
Among the most serious allegations are two groping incidents in 2020, including one during a cast trip to the Bahamas, and a 2021 encounter at Perry's home in which he allegedly assaulted Dixon while he was naked.
Following that alleged incident, one of Perry's lawyers reportedly praised Dixon's performance on
The Oval
, saying 'Christmas came early,' and he was later given a raise.
The lawsuit also claims Perry bought the rights to Dixon's script
Losing It
as a form of leverage, with no intention of actually producing it. The show was filmed but never developed further. Perry allegedly used the project to manipulate Dixon, holding it over his head like 'the sword of Damocles.'
Eventually, Perry offered Dixon a writing role, which Dixon declined. He later filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), though its status remains unclear.
In response, Perry's lawyer dismissed the claims as a baseless extortion attempt, saying: 'Tyler will not be shaken down and we are confident these fabricated claims of harassment will fail.'

Vir Das to crack jokes on his loss of voice in new comedy special Fool Volume, set to stream on this date

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 7 (ANI): International Emmy winner Vir Das is set to treat his fans with his new stand-up special 'Fool Volume', chronicling everything from losing his voice and self-doubt to rediscovering joy. 'Vir Das: Fool Volume' is set to premiere exclusively on Netflix on July 18. This stand-up special has been filmed across Mumbai, New York and London, making this not just a comedy special but a cross-continental rollercoaster. This Netflix special stems from Vir Das's speech loss experience before the biggest show of his career. What came next was Fool Volume: his most self-aware work to date. Vir takes on everything from silence and self-doubt to rediscovering joy. It's a comedy that doesn't just punch up--it reaches out. OTT platform Netflix shared a teaser for the upcoming special, in which the actor jokes about his loss of speech and his methods for coping with it. Talking about his new special, Vir Das says, "This special is a journey across countries, cultures, and a whole lot of internal chaos. For me, comedy has always been more than just punchlines. It's about connection. Whether you're in London, New York, or Mumbai, laughter sounds the same. This special is a celebration of that shared language of finding joy in the chaos, meaning in the absurd, and kindness in the noise. If someone watches it and feels a little lighter, a little more understood, or just laughs until their stomach hurts. That's the magic I'm chasing." This marks Vir's fifth Netflix special, making him the first Indian comedian to reach that milestone. With global successes like 'Abroad Understanding', 'Losing It', 'For India', and his International Emmy-winning special 'Landing', each special has further propelled Indian comedy onto the world stage. Pop star Katy Perry, actor Orlando Bloom split 6 years after getting engaged

New York, Jul 4 (AP) Popstar Katy Perry and actor Orlando Bloom have split, multiple media outlets reported on Thursday. Outlets including People and USA Today cited a statement that said the pair 'have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting' and would continue to be seen in public with their daughter. The statement, attributed to representatives for both stars, said their priority would be raising their daughter with 'love, stability, and mutual respect'. The statement came a week after reports of the couple's breakup swirled ahead of the wedding of billionaire Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos, which Bloom attended alone. Perry has been on a world tour. Representatives for Perry and Bloom did not immediately respond to The Associated Press' request for comment. Perry, 40, and Bloom, 48, have been romantically linked since 2016. The pair split in 2017 but rekindled shortly thereafter, getting engaged on Valentine's Day in 2019, as Perry revealed during an interview on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live'. In 2020, the pair welcomed a daughter named Daisy Dove Bloom. Perry and Bloom got UNICEF to announce the news on its Instagram account. Both are goodwill ambassadors for the United Nations agency that helps children. Bloom and his former wife, Australian model Miranda Kerr, have a son, Flynn, who was born in 2011. Daisy is Perry's only child. Perry, born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, was previously married to comedian Russell Brand. Born and raised in California, the 13-time Grammy Award nominee helped usher in the sound of '00s pop, quickly becoming one of the bestselling artists of all time for her campy, big, belting anthems. She has released seven studio albums, most notably 2010's sugar-sweet 'Teenage Dream'. The album produced five No. 1s that tied a record set by Michael Jackson's 1987 album 'Bad'. Bloom, who is from Canterbury, England, is best known for his roles as the elf Legolas in 'The Lord of the Rings' and "The Hobbit" films as well as Will Turner in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' series.
