Several Pakistani Accounts Blocked During Op Sindoor Reinstated After Govt Review: Sources
Last Updated: Restrictions were imposed earlier this year during India's Operation Sindoor counter-terror campaign. Some Pakistani news websites and social media accounts of Pakistani celebrities which were banned during India's counter-terror operation Operation Sindoor have resurfaced on social media. It is unclear if those restrictions have been lifted or not as there is no official announcement lifting the ban by the government. However, government sources speaking to News18 said that 'following a periodic review, some social media accounts have been reinstated" but majority of the handles remain blocked. The government sources pointed out that some '14,000 accounts on some social still remain banned". They further added: 'Upon the review, it has been observed that some of these platforms which have been reinstated have not spoken anti India language for a while, which was the main reason for blocking them". The sources said: 'Accounts cannot be permanently banned and are subject to regular reviews as part of the standard process". The ban, part of India's Operation Sindoor counter-terror effort, targeted major Pakistani media outlets including Dawn News, Geo News, ARY News, Bol News, Samaa TV, GNN, Suno News HD and The Pakistan Reference, among others. Together, these channels accounted for an estimated 63 million subscribers. The crackdown also extended to sports and entertainment channels such as Samaa Sports, Uzair Cricket and Hum TV, as well as individual journalists and content creators. Pakistan public and sports-related personalities whose accounts faced ban included Umar Cheema, Asma Shirazi, Muneeb Farooq, Irshad Bhatti, Razi Naama, Wasay Habib, Arzoo Kazmi, Syed Muzammil Shah and former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar. Several of them also faced restrictions on platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), as the ban widened in early May 2025. The restrictions were imposed amid cross-border information warfare and attempts by these Pakistani social media cells to manipulate Indian public sentiment. A notable example of Pakistani cricketers and celebs spreading misinformation was that of Shahid Afridi, who criticised the people of India and the Indian Army. In early May 2025, Shahid Afridi's YouTube channel was one of the Pakistani platforms blocked in India. India has recorded its strongest presence yet in the QS World University Rankings 2026, with 54 institutions making the list — a significant jump from 46 in 2025 and 45 in 2024. Assessments like GRE can power the 'Study in India' agenda in a significant way. We heard about TOEFL enhancements recently. When can we expect these changes to be implemented? The TOEFL enhancements are expected to be implemented from January 2026, which means there will be no changes to the current test structure until then. One major enhancement includes section-level adaptive testing for the Reading and Listening sections. This feature adjusts question difficulty in real-time based on how the test taker responds, providing a more accurate measure of competency in Listening or Reading. A CEFR-aligned scoring scale will also be introduced alongside the current 0–120 scale. This dual system will be in place for two years to support a smooth transition for institutions and students. Another key enhancement is expanding beyond academic English. The revised version of the test is designed to better reflect how students use English in real-world settings — such as collaborating with peers, participating in campus life, or navigating day-to-day interactions. The goal is to assess a more relevant set of English language skills that align with the demands of global education environments. ETS recently launched TOEIC Link for working professionals. Sources say a proposal is under discussion to reduce the 12% GST rate slab substantially. This move is expected to lower prices of many daily-use products that are part of every household's monthly expenses, especially for middle-class and low-income families struggling with rising costs. With GST collections at all-time highs, authorities believe there is fiscal space to offer relief to the common man, sources told News18. The Goods and Services Tax collections grew 6.2 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1.85 lakh crore in June 2025 against Rs 1.73 lakh crore in June 2024. However, the GST collections dropped sequentially with the figures crossing the Rs 2.01 lakh crore-mark in May 2025. India's gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection for May 2025 reached Rs 2.01 lakh crore, marking a 16.4 per cent increase from the Rs 1.72 lakh crore collected in May 2024, according to recent data released by the Ministry of Finance. While the expected rate cut could exceed 8–9%, no final decision has been made yet. Several Opposition-ruled states, along with some BJP-led ones, have submitted formal requests for a reduction in GST on key daily-use products. A final call is expected to be taken during the GST Council meeting in July. The GST Council is chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and includes finance ministers from all states and Union Territories with legislatures. An official date has not yet been announced, but the meeting is expected later this month. Media reports also suggest that the Council may discuss reducing GST on health insurance, which is currently taxed at 18%.
