Kirsty Coventry Makes Olympic History: Youth, Ubuntu, and a First-Round Knockout

Zawya21-03-2025
Kirsty Coventry, the first woman, African, and youngest of the candidates, has emerged victorious as the tenth President of the Olympic Committee. Some may argue this outcome was predictable, given that Thomas Bach had selected her as his successor. While Bach's endorsement played a pivotal role, something else must have influenced those who decided to place their bet on her in the first round of voting, an outcome that many of the most experienced Olympic commentators deemed impossible. Coventry secured 49 votes out of 97, followed by Samaranch with 28 votes, with the others far behind.
AGE During an interview we organized for colleagues worldwide, she said: "First and foremost, I would have loved to be the youngest-ever candidate, but most of you know that our founder, Pierre de Coubertin, was actually the youngest at age 33, so I've got a good decade on him, which I'm proud of. But really, it's a great honour to be in this race.'
WHAT HAPPENED? She was right, but why such a landslide of votes so quickly? Several factors could have contributed to this. One possibility lies in the events of recent months. The traditional IOC world may have been somewhat shaken by a new development: four of the seven candidates are presidents of international federations and ex officio members - meaning they are members as long as they remain in office. This special, yet temporary, membership was introduced in the 1990s.
THE PAST Juan Antonio Samaranch, then IOC president, had accepted the persistent request of Primo Nebiolo, who had also created the ASOIF, to bring them into the Olympic family. To appease him, Samaranch granted the request, and the ex officio title prevented Nebiolo from running for the IOC presidency. This year, however, the interpretation of the rule has changed, though the curious procedure remains: if one of these ex officio candidates had won, they would have had to undergo a new vote to be accepted as an individual member.
THE ASSAULT The sudden surge of support for these four presidents seems to have caused some unease within the Olympic family. Each one is a highly capable leader with a proven track record in their respective fields. While their opinions and projects were closely scrutinized, they struggled to make a significant impact. Had any of them won, it could have potentially undermined the foundations of the current Olympic structure. However, their candidacies will likely spark positive reflections, as collaboration with international federations will need to grow more closely and transparently, especially during such challenging times. Let's hope that any negative sentiments do not leave lasting damage; it would be unfortunate because the world of sports needs its finest leaders right now.
UBUNTU PHILOSOPHY Kirsty has consistently stated that she follows the principles of the Ubuntu philosophy, which prioritizes collectivism over individualism. Ubuntu asserts that society shapes our humanity: 'I am because we are.' This is a guiding principle that will be tested in the coming months and years, especially in the often individualistic world of sports management. A woman's practical approach to interpersonal relationships may prove especially valuable, and it will be fascinating to watch her navigate this new chapter.
ANOTHER REASON The majority of IOC members also made a decision based on the age issue, which dictates retirement at 70. While this rule is outdated and no longer justified, it could have posed a problem had a candidate in their sixties been elected. At the same time, this decision demonstrates that the Olympic family is open to youth and women. The fact that Coventry was elected in the first round, with Samaranch securing a clear second place over other candidates, indicates that 80% of members opted for an internal solution. Even the athletes bypassed the programs of the federal presidents - a noteworthy trend.
We can only say that the novelty is intriguing, it can bring many new and positive things, but there will certainly be severe obstacles to overcome. Kirsty has always told us: "You have to know how to organize yourself in every circumstance, even those that are not easy to predict." She also promised us to respect the work of journalists and her first act, when she accepted our invitation, demonstrated this to us. Now we must continue on that path.

Authorities abandon recovery of German Olympian killed in Pakistan

Authorities have abandoned efforts to recover the body of German Olympic biathlete Laura Dahlmeier, who died in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan this week. Dahlmeier was confirmed dead on Wednesday, having been hit by falling rocks while climbing at an altitude of 5,700 metres (18,700 feet) on Laila Peak in the Karakoram range. Attempts to recover her body were abandoned due to "dangerous" conditions at the site, Dahlmeier's management agency said on Thursday. In consultation with the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the agency said her relatives would "continue to monitor the situation... and are keeping the option of arranging a rescue at a later date." Marina Eva (2R), mountaineering partner of German Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier, looks on during a press conference in Skardu. AFP Several of Dahlmeier's colleages confirmed the two-time Olympic gold medallist had said she did not want her body recovered if it put any would-be rescuers at risk. German mountaineer Thomas Huber was part of a team who had attempted a rescue but told reporters on Thursday: "We have decided she should stay, because that was her wish." Another member of the rescue team, American Jackson Marvell told AFP it would be "disrespectful" to recover her body contrary to her wishes. Marvell said "the recovery of Laura's body will be possible, but it involves incredible risks, both on foot and by helicopter." Laura Dahlmeier celebrates during the medals ceremony at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. File / AP Dahlmeier's climbing partner Marina Krauss, who was with her at the time of the incident, said at a press conference on Thursday the former Olympian did not move after being caught in a rockfall. "I saw Laura being hit by a huge rock and then being thrown against the wall. And from that moment on, she didn't move again," Krauss told reporters. Krauss said she was unable to reach Dahlmeier and called for outside support. "It was impossible for me to get there safely. "It was clear to me the only way to help her was to call a helicopter. She didn't move, she didn't show any signs (of movement). I called out to her, but there was no response." "She only had a chance if help arrived immediately," she said. Dahlmeier won seven world championship gold medals, and at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang she became the first woman biathlete to win both the sprint and the pursuit at the same Games. Dahlmeier retired from professional competition in 2019 at the age of 25. Agence France-Presse

Libya's GNU strikes smuggling networks with Turkish drones in message to rivals

Libya's internationally recognised government has begun using Turkish drones to strike people-smuggling networks. Strikes were carried out on Wednesday in the northwestern coastal cities of Sabratha and Zwara, the Government of National Unity (GNU) announced. The strikes were 'part of a systematic security campaign and comprehensive strategic plan aimed at intensifying operations to degrade and dismantle the criminal gangs and networks trafficking in human lives and people-smuggling into Europe,' Abdulsalam Al-Zoubi, the GNU's deputy defence minister, said on Thursday. 'These operations, which included the inaugural use of UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles], demonstrate the determination and zero-tolerance approach of the GNU in tackling these criminal networks and disrupting their illegal activity.' A source within the GNU told Middle East Eye that the drones were 'Turkish UAVs owned and operated by the Libyan Ministry of Defence'. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters While authorities have previously carried out air strikes against such groups, this was their first use of drones. The defence ministry said it targeted factories used to manufacture boats and other equipment essential to people and weapon-smuggling schemes. 'No civilian casualties' For several years, criminal organisations have operated along Libya's coast, particularly in the northwest, facilitating irregular migration for people trying to reach Europe from the African continent. The ministry said it issued warnings to residents in Sabratha and Zwara ahead of the strikes, and that no civilian casualties were reported. Emadeddin Badi, an expert on Libyan security and politics, said Zoubi's involvement in these strikes was significant. 'He recently visited Turkey and is the person that has coordinated these strikes with Turkish support,' Badi told MEE. Trump envoy Massad Boulos to visit Libya amid rising tensions, sources say Read More » 'His involvement, especially from Mitiga, is a signal that he's asserting operational autonomy, even within the GNU's own command structure.' Mitiga is an airport in Tripoli that was the source of tension recently between the GNU and Rada, a powerful armed group. 'Their coordination from this base is a big signal that is key to unpacking [the strikes'] significance,' said Badi. The analyst added that while some reports, citing GNU officials, had framed the strikes as being carried out by Turkish Akinci drones, he had received information to suggest that Bayraktar TB2 drones had been used. 'Akincis are based between Wutiya and Misrata, whereas the recent strikes originated from Mitiga, which only hosts TB2s,' he said. Zoubi stated that the strikes sent a clear message to non-state actors in Libya that all measures, including military actions within international law, would be taken to 're-establish border control, strengthen national security, and reaffirm the sovereignty of the state'. Over the past decade, trafficking and smuggling along the coast has been a key tool used by militias and non-state actors in Libya to wield political and financial influence. Eastern Libya is controlled by a rival administration dominated by Khalifa Haftar, a military commander. Two years ago, people smugglers in the east linked to Haftar were accused of involvement in a deadly shipwreck off the coast of Greece that killed more than 500 people. Badi said that as well as targeting smugglers, Wednesday's operation also targeted those loyal to Mohamed Bahroun, known as al-Far (the rat), a prominent militia leader and known GNU opponent. 'It also serves as a deterrent message to rivals in the west coast,' he said. 'That kind of signalling aligns closely with Ankara's broader goal in Libya: avoiding another armed confrontation in Tripoli.'
