Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer E190, carrying 67 passengers from Baku to Grozny in Russia, crashed after crossing the Caspian Sea in Aktau, Kazakhstan.
An investigation by the Azerbaijani government found that the plane was hit by a Russian Pantsir-S surface-to-air missile defence system.
Russians claimed the city of Grozny was under attack from Ukrainian drones at the time the plane was hit.
A chilling voice recording ordering the shooting of the plane was leaked to Azerbaijani media.
A person can be heard saying: "Hello! Azimuth 338, range 7,000, altitude 490, speed 118, heading 230."
To which a person replies: "Yes, range is now 7. Fire! I said fire!"
The first person, understood to be operating the Russian air defence unit, then replies: "Fired!"
"Missed… Missed! Again! Fire once more," the other person says
"Copy, firing," said the operator before firing the fatal air defence rocket.
The voice reporting the coordinates was Captain Dmitry Paladichuk, a Russian air defence officer commanding a missile unit, it has been found.

The devastating exchange was leaked to the Azerbaijan outlet Minval amid deeply strained relations between Moscow and Baku.
A leak of handwritten testimony by Captain Paladichuk revealed a gripping account of how he was ordered by an unnamed commander to shoot.
In a sworn statement he said: 'I was ordered by phone to destroy the target.'
He said: 'At 08:13:30 I ordered the operator to engage. At 08:13:33 the missile cleared the launcher. At 08:13:47 the BM-72V6 [fire] control system reported a miss.
"At 08:13:48 I ordered a second engagement….
'The second missile was launched when the target had the following characteristics: azimuth 311°, distance 8,000 m, altitude 1,300 m, speed 120 m/s.'
The plane's speed, around 265 mph, was more than double the speed of most drones.
Also, the altitude of the object - between 1,607ft and 4,265ft - indicated it was a plane seeking to land at a nearby airport.

'This suggests that the military had every indication that the object was a manned aircraft,' said the Insider independent media outlet analysing the leak from media in Azerbaijan.
Terrifying footage showed the Embraer aircraft nosediving before smashing into the ground in a fireball.
It exploded next to the aircraft, with the shrapnel hitting passengers and cabin crew, the report said.
Grozny is the capital of the region of Chechnya, controlled by a close Putin ally and warlord, Ramzan Kadyrov.
The use of air defence systems aligned with reports of Ukrainian drone attacks in Chechnya on the morning of Christmas Day.
It marked the second time in a decade that Russia has downed a passenger plane after the MH17 crash in Ukraine in 2014.
MIRACLE SURVIVORS
Dozens of passengers, including children, miraculously survived the horror crash.
Around 150 emergency responders rushed to the scene, battling towering flames and thick plumes of black smoke rising ominously into the sky.
Meanwhile, an investigative team led by the deputy prosecutor general of Azerbaijan is working at the crash site.
They found the black box of the doomed flight which revealed the haunting final words the pilot said just moments before the plane crashed on the ground.
Struggling to control the plane, one of the pilots said: "I can't execute, control is lost!"
The pilots reportedly tried to take the plane to three different airports but failed to land.
But they lost communication with the ground crew before vanishing off the radar for 37 minutes.
Footage emerged showing terrified passengers making final video calls and leaving messages as the aircraft began to plunge.
Distressed people on board can be seen jumping out of their seats as they try to make sense of the situation.
As the oxygen masks dangled in the air, some passengers started to scream in horror, while others called their loved ones and began praying.

Russia cannot lose war in Ukraine, warns China

Russia cannot afford to lose the war in Ukraine, China has warned. Wang Yi, China's foreign minister, said Beijing does not want to see a Russian loss because of fears the United States would then shift its focus on to China. The comments were made during a four-hour meeting between Mr Wang and Kaja Kallas, the vice-president of the European Commission, according to several sources who spoke to the South China Morning Post. The remarks took many by surprise as Chinese officials do not often speak this candidly, even in closed-door meetings. According to those familiar with the conversation, Mr Wang also gave Ms Kallas several 'history lessons and lectures' about realpolitik and concerns in Beijing that Washington will gradually turn its attention east. There are signs that this change is already underway as Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth, the US secretary of defence, have both made clear that security in the Indo-Pacific region and mitigating a threat from China is a top priority for the administration. China has repeatedly said that it is 'not a party' to Russia's war against Ukraine and has denied supplying weapons to Moscow, despite evidence to the contrary, including reports that it supplied Russia with a laser defence system. Mr Wang's comments are the latest sign that China has a vested interest in the outcome of the war. Following the exchange, Chinese state media reported that China has 'consistently advocated for peace talks to solve the Ukraine crisis' and welcomed the 'efforts of all parties to reach a comprehensive, lasting and binding peace agreement'. The remarks came after the US halted weapons shipments to Ukraine because of concerns that America's stockpile is too low. In a blow to Kyiv, the White House said it will ' put America's interests first following a review of the nation's military support and assistance to other countries across the globe'. While those familiar with Mr Wang's meeting with Ms Kallas said it was respectful, soon after it was reported that the upcoming two-day EU summit in China had been shortened, at Beijing's request. The original agenda had Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, and Antonio Costa, the president of the European Council, meeting with Chinese president Xi Jinping and premier Li Qiang in Beijing on July 24, then travelling to Hefei, in central China, for a business summit on July 25. Now, the summit will only be one day in Beijing. Experts suspect the reason the summit was cut short could be because of Chinese concerns that the EU will sign a trade deal with the US that would hurt Beijing. China has also recently clashed with the EU over export controls of rare earth elements and magnets, which have hit some European manufacturers hard. Mr Wang tried to offer reassurances about export controls yesterday, saying that 'certain forces are deliberately hyping this matter' and that rare earth exports have never been and should not become an issue between China and Europe. The summit's shortening seemed to be a snap decision as the EU Chamber of Commerce in China was inviting members to sign up for meetings in Hefei as late as Thursday morning local time.

Iran's ‘medieval' fatwa demanding Trump be CRUCIFIED could spark homegrown terror attacks in West, top politicians warn

Sharia law states those charged must not only be killed but also tortured prior to death, including through crucifixion and limb amputation. Senior cleric Najmuddin Tabasi vowed Trump "must be executed" and said "the same hand that fired a shot past his ear can put a bullet through his throat" - referring to an assassination attempt last July. A sickening fundraiser has even been set up by hardline Iranian cleric Abdolmajid Kharahaani to hire an assassin to murder Trump and Israeli prime minister Netanyahu. It comes in the wake of the so-called 12-day war which saw Trump and Israel "obliterate" much of Iran's nuclear empire. United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Governor Jeb Bush, CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, and Senior Advisor Rt. Hon. Tom Tugendhat MP insisted the mullahs must be urgently sanctioned. They also warned how high-ranking regime enforcers are in contact with individuals in both the US and Europe. In a statement shared exclusively with The Sun, Bush, Wallace and Tugendhat said: "The Iranian regime's medieval and barbaric threats against the US president and others cannot be ignored – and must not go unanswered. "The US government and its allies should immediately sanction Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his son Mojtaba Khamenei, Makarem-Shirazi, Hamedani, Tabasi, and Panahian, as Specially Designated Global Terrorists. 'None of these men have been sanctioned to date under counterterrorism authorities. The trio also urged US authorities to conduct national security-based immigration review on named clerics, Iranian officials and their families to stop them from traveling to America and allied nations. "UANI has revealed that these senior Iranian regime mullahs are in direct communication with individuals and entities in the West, including in the US and Europe," they added. "Against this backdrop, there is an added urgency to implement stringent measures against them. "These calls are incitements to homegrown terrorist attacks and pose a serious threat to the president and US nationals—they should be treated accordingly." 6 Smoke rises from a fire following a strike on Tehran in June Credit: Reuters 6 Ayatollah Ali Khamenei addressing the nation in June during Israel's strikes Credit: AFP What is a fatwa? A FATWA is a formal ruling or interpretation on a point of Islamic law by a Marja - a title given to the highest level of Twelver Shia religious cleric. It calls on all Muslims, including the Islamic governments and individuals, to ensure its enforcement. In countries where Islamic law is the basis of the legal system, a fatwa can be binding. A fatwa issued by Iran's first supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini led to the massacre of 30,000 prisoners including some as young as 13 in a shocking two-month purge. The 1988 executions were revealed in the memoirs of Grand Ayatollah Hossein-Ali Montazeri, one of Ayatollah Khomeini's closest advisors who went on to condemn his murderous act. In it, he accused prisoners of "waging war against God" and urged Death Commissioners in charge of the mass killings to "show no mercy". Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi unleashed the fatwa on Sunday in response to Trump's comments on possible intentions to kill Ayatollah Khamenei. It comes after the US leader, 79, warned last month that he knew where Khamenei was hiding but wouldn't target him - "at least not for now". A day earlier, Netanyahu had said killing the supreme leader would not "escalate the conflict", but instead "end it". Furious Shirazi said 'any person or regime that threatens the leadership and religious authority' is considered a 'mohareb' – one who wages war against God. The sick fatwa also forbids any Muslim to cooperate with or support the two leaders - and says that any jihadist who is killed while attacking them will receive a reward from Allah. Shirazi's ruling came following an inquiry on how Muslims should react to threats made against the Supreme Leader and other Shia leaders. Timeline of assassination attempts on Donald Trump July 13, 2024 - Thomas Crooks shot at Donald Trump after hiding on a roof overlooking the former President's outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Crooks was killed by Secret Service snipers after he fired eight shots at Trump and killed one rallygoer and injured two others. The bullet came less than a quarter of an inch from striking Trump's head, Ronny Jackson, the former president's physician, said. September 15 - Ryan Routh was seen by a Secret Service agent hiding in the bushes with a rifle at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida. Trump was playing a round of golf when the alleged would-be assassin managed to get within 400 yard of Trump. Routh fled the scene in an SUV but was caught by cops and arrested. September 25 - Donald Trump posts on social media that he's been informed of an Iranian plot against his life. October 7 - Farhad Shakeri is given an order by an official in Iran's Revolutionary Guard to come up with a plan to kill Donald Trump within seven days. He told the FBI that he never intended to devise a plan in that timeframe, but allegedly discussed it with two hired guns in New York. November 7 - Carlisle Rivera of Brooklyn and Jonathan Loadholt of Staten Island are arrested in New York for being part of the plot to kill Donald Trump along with three other Americans Iran deemed targets. Shirazi, one of Tehran's chief religious authorities, called on Muslims worldwide to "make these enemies regret their words and actions". A fatwa was previously handed down on author Salman Rushdie in 1989 after his book The Satanic Verses infuriated then Ayatollah Khomeini - who put a $3million bounty on his head. The novelist, 77, faced numerous death threats and was forced to live largely in hiding for years before an assassination attempt in 2022. He lost sight in one eye after he was repeatedly stabbed on stage during a lecture in New York. It comes amid fears the fatwas are being used to stoke fears among domestic dissidents who dare to rebel against the regime. Hundreds have been arrested in the last two weeks, many accused of spying for Israel, and executions have escalated. Campaigners have warned the wounded regime is ramping up repression of its own people in a bid to stamp out any chance of an uprising. At a funeral for military top brass killed during Israel's strike, haunting chants of "Death to America" rung out. 6

It is the first State Visit to be held at Windsor since 2014 when Irish President Michael D Higgins was given the honour. Buckingham Palace is out of action due to ongoing £369million renovation. Donald Trump's expected State Visit in September is also expected to be at Windsor Castle. Palace officials have confirmed William and Kate will greet the Macrons at RAF Northolt on Tuesday morning on behalf of the King and travel with them to Windsor. Charles and Camilla will formally greet their guests on a Royal Dais constructed on Datchet Road in Windsor town centre, with the castle in the backdrop as gun salutes sound in nearby Home Park. The King, the Queen, the Waleses and Macrons will then take a carriage procession through the town and along part of the Long Walk into the Castle. A ceremonial welcome will be held in the castle's quadrangle with Camilla, William, Kate and Mrs Macron watching as the King and President Macron inspect the Guard of Honour. After lunch in the State Dining Room they will all view a special exhibition of items relating to France from the Royal Collection in the Green Drawing Room. The Macrons will also travel to London on Tuesday afternoon to see the Grave of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey. At the Houses of Parliament the French leader will address parliamentarians in the Royal Gallery, and meet opposition leaders at Lancaster House. The King and president will both deliver speeches at the banquet on Tuesday evening. Kensington Palace has yet to confirm whether or not the princess will attend the banquet in Windsor Castle's St George's Hall. In a personal touch, the King and Queen will, on Wednesday, take the Macrons to see Fabuleu de Maucour, a 10-year-old grey gelding which Mr Macron gifted to known horse-lover the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 in celebration of her Platinum Jubilee. Fabuleu de Maucour belonged to the largely ceremonial French Republican Guard and was trained to carry the standard-bearer. They will also view an elegant Charabanc carriage from the Royal Mews, which was a present to Queen Victoria from King Louis-Philippe of France in 1844. And the Macrons will privately pay their respects at the late Queen's tomb in St George's Chapel by laying flowers in tribute. Charles, Ranger of Windsor Great Park, will also invite the president to tour the Windsor Castle Gardens, including areas of nature restoration and biodiversity and the wider Great Park. Wednesday will see the president and Mrs Macron join Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Lady Starmer for lunch at Downing Street, ahead of a UK-France summit at Number 10 on Thursday. The King and Queen paid a state visit to France in September 2023 and enjoy a warm rapport with French leader and his wife, who will stay in the castle during their trip. It is largely seen as a template for Trump's visit in the autumn. The last state visit to the UK from France was in March 2008 when the now-disgraced president Nicolas Sarkozy, since convicted of corruption and influence peddling, and his wife Carla Bruni, were the guests of Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor. 6 The Princess of Wales planting a rose during a visit to the RHS's Wellbeing Garden at Colchester Hospital in Essex Credit: PA 6 The Princess of Wales during a visit to the RHS's Wellbeing Garden Credit: PA
