Charlie Dean sees the lighter side of ‘Mankad' dismissal, says England team-mate
The teams meet at the home of cricket on Saturday for the first time since a controversial finish in 2022, when India spinner Deepti Sharma pulled out of her action and ran Dean out backing up at the non-striker's end.
The rarely used mode of dismissal, while entirely legal, caused a familiar row about the spirit of cricket and India were booed off after Dean was seen in tears as she left the field.
There were disputes about whether Dean had been warned or not – with Sharma insisting she had before England skipper Heather Knight took to social media to insist otherwise.
But as the sides prepare to meet in the second Metro Bank one-day international, with the hosts needing to win to take the series to a decider, the rancour has been replaced by mirth.
'Did something funny happen a few years ago? Charlie may have mentioned it once or twice,' said all-rounder Alice Davidson-Richards.
'It's been mentioned in more of a jokey way. It's something we can laugh at and I think Charlie finds it funny to joke around with it. We're just excited for the team to get going.'
Dean was just a year into her international career when she caught in the Mankad maelstrom but has since become an integral part of the side and was spoken of as an outside bet for the captaincy before Nat Sciver-Brunt replaced Knight earlier this year.
In a way, her time at the centre of a controversy may even have accelerated her growth.
'I think, as with any other cricketing experience, it's another game that you're going to learn from,' said Davidson-Richards.
'Whether it's that sort of incident or whether it's bowling the last over to close out a game for the team, Charlie has played so many games now and is such a smart cricketer. For her it's just another game of cricket.'
India opener Pratika Rawal has been censured by the International Cricket Council for making 'avoidable physical contact' with opponents Lauren Filer and Sophie Ecclestone during her side's win at the Utilita Bowl.
Rawal was fined 10 per cent of her match fee and punished further with one demerit point but insisted there was nothing malicious in her actions.
'It was not intentional, that shoulder barge thing was not deliberate. I don't think there's a reaction or a fuss out of it,' she said.

Charlotte Dujardin made dressage comeback at Gloucestershire event
Former Olympic dressage champion Charlotte Dujardin returned to action at the weekend after serving a one-year suspension from the sport. The 40-year-old competed at the Hunters Equestrian event in Gloucestershire, marking her first action since she was banned over a horse whipping controversy which came to light just prior to the start of the Paris Olympics last summer. Dujardin, who has won six Olympic medals including individual gold in 2012 and 2016, had a one-year ban imposed on her by the sport's international federation, the FEI, in December but had been provisionally suspended since July 23 last year. Dujardin is now free to enter and compete in domestic events and does not need to seek permission from the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) to do so. She would need to seek BEF permission to compete internationally. Dujardin won in two categories at the Hunters Equestrian on her new horse, Special Effect. It is not clear where Dujardin will compete next, but she would need to reach a regional final in order to qualify for September's National Championships in Cheshire. Dujardin was provisionally suspended last July after the FEI launched an investigation into a video showing her whipping a horse during a coaching session. Dujardin accepted she had made 'an error of judgement' and fully accepted the sanction imposed on her. She revealed last December, at the time the FEI imposed the ban, that she had been pregnant at the time the incident came to light.

Fara Williams hopeful Sarina Wiegman will sign new contract as England manager
Former England midfielder Fara Williams is hopeful 'incredible woman' Sarina Wiegman will remain in her role as Lionesses head coach beyond 2027 after her double European Championship success. England have won 35 of their 48 matches under Wiegman, with Sunday's Euro 2025 final victory over Spain in Basel sealing a triumphant defence of the title won in 2022 and serving as revenge for defeat in the World Cup showpiece in Australia two years ago. The 55-year-old, who took up the Lionesses' reins in September 2021, is under contract with the Football Associations until summer 2027, and Williams would love to see her stay at the helm even past that point. 'I don't think any of us want to lose Sarina,' Williams, England's most capped player, told the PA news agency. 'Even when we've maybe doubted the Lionesses, I guess this tournament… we spoke a lot about her substitutions and timing of them, but whenever you seem to doubt Sarina, she pulls through. 'The incredible woman she is, the incredible manager she is and coach that she is and how she can galvanise a group of players and get them to win games even when things aren't looking pretty on the pitch.' Wiegman has now won the last three European Championships, having guided the Netherlands to 2017 glory. The Dutch team went on to reach the World Cup final two years later, meaning Wiegman has now reached five straight finals in major tournaments. 'To go to five back-to-back tournament finals is an unbelievable achievement,' Williams said. 'I would love for them to give her a contract even further than than 2027, but at some point she might need a break. 'But, let her have that break after hopefully bringing a World Cup back for us!' The Euro 2025 winners landed back in England on Monday afternoon and were immediately whisked off to a reception at 10 Downing Street. The celebrations continue on Tuesday with an open-top bus parade through central London.
