Nearly 8,000 Killed In Syria Within Six Months: Monitor
According to the war monitor, the number includes more than 2,130 'extrajudicial executions' and 'identity-based killings.' It warned of a 'pattern of organized violence' across the country. The SOHR report documents 'the killing of 7,670 people across Syria from 8 December 2024 to 6 June 2025,' adding that among those killed are '5,784 civilians, including 306 children and 422 women.'
SOHR warned that 'this grim toll is a result of ongoing violence and violations by local and external parties, alongside widespread security chaos,' which reflects 'the fragility of the security situation and the increasing danger to the most vulnerable constituents of society.'
The over 2,130 executions were 'committed in brutal ways.'
In March this year, Syrian government forces carried out a series of brutal massacres targeting Alawite civilians on the Syrian coast. Damascus said it would launch a probe, the results of which have not been made clear. SOHR says '1,726 liquidations' were recorded during the March massacres against Alawites.
Unofficial estimates at the time said the number could be way higher, possibly several thousand. The killings were carried out in response to an armed uprising against security forces launched by elements of the former government's armed forces.
The UK-based monitor went on to say that since the collapse of the Assad government, 1,886 non-civilian combatants have been killed, including 496 members of the Syrian Defense and Interior Ministries. Additionally, 627 members of various armed factions, many linked to the new authorities in Damascus, were also among those killed.
Over 250 members of the US-backed Kurdish militia, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), have been killed as well, according to SOHR. SOHR notes that 75 percent of all the deaths are civilians.
The new Syrian army is dominated by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a former Al-Qaeda branch with a history of war crimes and violent, sectarian ideology. Several other extremist factions, including notorious groups such as Jaish al-Islam, have been incorporated into Damascus's forces as well.
Alawites continue to be targeted by Syria's military and groups under its command. In the last five days, at least 18 Alawites have been killed in a new wave of violence targeting the minority group.
Meanwhile, the country faces a widespread Israeli occupation and regular bombardment. The new SOHR report comes as Syria is being pulled out of years of isolation – with the US, UK, and EU taking steps to lift the sanctions on the country, which had been imposed for 14 years.

The EU is set to provide Syria with nearly $200 million (€175 million) to boost reconstruction, the health sector, agriculture, and the country's economy, EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica announced while visiting Damascus on 4 June.
Syria's President Ahmad al-Sharaa – a former Al-Qaeda and ISIS chief who went by the nom de guerre Abu Mohammad al-Julani – has met with world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Donald Trump.

US Envoy Blasted For Claiming Syrian Government Forces Not Involved In Sectarian Executions
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based rights group that tracks violence in Syria, has released a statement criticizing US Ambassador Tom Barrack for claiming Syrian government forces were not involved in the mass executions of civilians in Suwayda, southern Syria. Seven days of clashes between Druze militias and Bedouin who were backed by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) government forces left 1,399 people dead, including 196 civilians executed by gunmen affiliated with the Syrian defense and interior ministries, according to the SOHR. Barrack, who serves as the ambassador to Turkey and as a special envoy to Syria, claimed Syrian government troops didn't enter Suwayda during the violence. 'The Syrian troops haven't gone into the city. These atrocities that are happening are not happening by the Syrian regime troops. They're not even in the city because they agreed with Israel that they would not go in,' he told Reuters . Barrack also claimed that the fighters who entered the city may have been ISIS members disguised as government troops, though HTS and ISIS share a similar ideology. In response, the SOHR said that it 'strongly rejects and condemns' Barrack's comments. 'SOHR considers these statements to lack even the minimum standards of objectivity and neutrality. They not only represent a serious deviation from the envoy's expected role as a mediator working toward peace and stability among Syrians, but also open the door for further massacres to be committed against other Syrian communities, similar to what has happened to the Druze and Alawites in Suwayda and other regions,' the SOHR said. 'SOHR affirms that it possesses documented evidence, including video footage and credible field testimonies, confirming that the horrific violations, including the execution of civilians, the throwing of young men from upper floors and the killing of a Syrian-American citizen on sectarian grounds, took place on the day Syrian Ministry of Defense personnel entered Suwayda city,' the group added. The SOHR said that Barrack should not act as a 'defense attorney' for 'an interim authority that has failed to protect Syrians and whose media and key figures have contributed to fueling sectarian and regional conflict.' The SOHR has detailed many of the executions in Suwayda, including one where Hosam Saraya, a 35-year-old Syrian American, was shot to death along with seven of his relatives, a massacre that was filmed and posted online. The SOHR also detailed the killing of Pastor Khaled Maher Mazhar, a Christian convert from the Druze religion who was massacred along with 11 members of his family, including six women. The group said the family was killed by members of the Syrian Defense Ministry. 'The perpetrators opened fire directly on everyone inside the house, even extending the killing to include the family's dog, an act that reflects the extreme brutality of the massacre,' the SOHR said. HTS formed in 2017 as an offshoot of the al-Nusra Front, which was al-Qaeda's official affiliate in Syria until Sharaa rebranded to gain international support. HTS took power in Damascus following a lightning offensive that ended with the ouster of former President Bashar al-Assad. The US had foreknowledge of the offensive and helped a US-backed militia take part in the assault from its base at al-Tanf in southern Syria.

US Will Engage Russia On Nuclear Disarmament Treaty, Trump Says
President Donald Trump on Friday responded to a question posed by a reporter for the Russian TASS agency during a press conference on the White House lawn regarding nuclear weapons. The US expects to formally engage with Russia soon on prospects for nuclear disarmament, Trump indicated, as the last remaining landmark nuclear arms control treaty between Washington and Moscow, known as New START, is in its last year. The full name is Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms. 'That's not an agreement you want expiring. We're starting to work on that,' he told reporters outside the White House. It's expiring 'in about six months,' the TASS reporter had reminded Trump. 'It's a problem for the world,' the president said continued in reference to its upcoming expiration of early 2026. 'When you take off nuclear restrictions, that's a big problem.' He reiterated that he would like to see the US and Russia to cut their nuclear weapons stockpiles. Trump has since entering into office for his second term signaled repeatedly that this is an aim of his which would be good for the world and for humanity. In March 2021 the two sides renewed New START for a period of five years, and it will expire in February 2026 if it is not continued – an increasing possibility given US-Russia relations have deteriorated so fast over the Ukraine war that they hover near complete breaking point. Trump has made clear he wants to improve bilateral relations, despite also expressing frustration that peace talks haven't produced fruit thus far. There could even possibly be a future face-to-face meeting with President Putin. The New START treaty is intended to limit and reduce nuclear arms on either side, setting a limit of no more than 1,550 deployed warheads and 700 missiles. START I began in 1991, with New START signed under the prior Obama and Medvedev administrations in 2010 as a successor agreement.
