Wang Leehom's close call on stage leaves fans aghast
WANG Leehom (pic) nearly fell through a trapdoor on stage and left concertgoers gasping after a mishap with a lift, reported China Press.
The 48-year-old American-Taiwanese singer, who was performing in Hangzhou on May 2, descended onto the stage supported by wires during the start of the song Heaven and Earth Dragon.
When the song ended, Wang was supposed to leave the stage by stepping through a trapdoor supported by the lift.
However, the lift platform was lowered nearly a foot just before Wang stepped on it, causing him to lose his balance and nearly fall through the trapdoor.
Fortunately, the singer managed to catch himself.
Many concertgoers criticised the lift operator for their carelessness.
'He could have seriously injured himself if he had fallen through. They should fire the operator,' one fan said.
It was reported that just last year, Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau suffered a similar accident and nearly rolled off the stage during a concert in Shenzhen.
Unaware that a trapdoor had opened unexpectedly during the show, concertgoers watched in horror as Lau nearly tripped and fell through it.
Lau, 62, managed to grab onto the edge and shift his weight back towards the stage.
> A primary school teacher in China was unrecognisable by his former students after managing to lose nearly half of her body weight in just one year.
China Press reported that 27-year-old Huang, who once weighed 163kg, was determined to lose weight and adopted a healthier lifestyle beginning 2018.
The teacher started a diet by keeping track of the calories she consumed every day.
Huang also began taking on weight training and underwent 40 minutes of cardiovascular exercise every day.
Without the use of fat loss drugs, Huang lost an average of 6.5kg every month.
In just a year, she lost 48% of her body weight and currently maintains a weight of just 85kg.
Having shared her journey online, Huang quickly amassed 55,000 followers on social media.
She said that since losing weight, her former students who have graduated fail to recognise her whenever they return to the school for a visit.

Organiser denies claims of Chinese-only language G-Dragon shows
The G-Dragon concert, part of the K-pop star's highly anticipated world tour, took place at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, on July 19 and 20. Photos: Handout Concert organiser Star Planet has denied allegations that signage and announcements at the G-Dragon concert in Kuala Lumpur were predominantly in Chinese, following backlash from local fans on social media. In a statement released by the company, its chief operating officer Carmen Liew clarified that it is inaccurate to state that signage and announcements were predominantly in Chinese, noting that all international events use bilingual materials in both English and Chinese. "For the G-Dragon concert in particular, live announcements were also made in Bahasa Malaysia and essential notices were likewise available in Bahasa Malaysia,' the organiser told Sinar Daily. The company added that it has taken note of public feedback and will consider incorporating more Bahasa Malaysia in future events involving K-pop or local artistes. "That said, we've noted the feedback and will certainly consider incorporating even more Bahasa Malaysia for future K-pop or Malay artist events," she added. The G-Dragon concert, part of the K-pop star's highly anticipated world tour, took place at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, on July 19 and 20. Social media users had voiced frustration over the high number of attendees from mainland China and alleged that Malaysian fans were sidelined. Another point of criticism involved ticket scalping, with fans accusing the organiser of insider ticket sales to buyers in China. One viral post alleged that all VVIP, VIP and Cat 1 tickets were snapped up by agents and resold at inflated prices, while genuine fans were left with limited options or forced to buy at mark-ups. Fans also raised concerns that the ticketing system lacked security, with no codes required during the fan club presale, making it vulnerable to bots. Some users also claimed their tickets were cancelled over suspicious activity, while scalper tickets remained valid. Accusations were also made that tickets under the "FAM" category were distributed through insider networks linked to the organiser. Star Planet again has firmly denied the claims. They said the allegations of ticket scalping are entirely baseless and without any supporting evidence. "We want to firmly reiterate that Star Planet had no involvement in any insider ticket sales for the G-Dragon tour. "It is also important to note that all ticketing activities or actions for a world tour of this scale are conducted under close oversight and require coordination and approval from multiple parties, including the tour's official management," said Liew. The company added that ticketing activities for international tours require oversight and approval from multiple parties, including the tour's official management, to ensure transparency and compliance with global standards. Addressing one specific case that went viral, the company said a ticket was voided due to suspicious activity but reinstated after verification. Star Planet acknowledged the global problem of scalping and said it is working with its ticketing partner to improve bot-filtering systems for future events. "We fully understand the frustration and disappointment experienced by fans who were unable to secure tickets for this highly anticipated event. "Scalping remains a widespread issue globally and presents an ongoing challenge for event organisers. "To address this, we are in active discussions with our ticketing partner to explore and implement more advanced bot-filtering solutions aimed at minimising scalper activity and ensuring fairer access for genuine fans for upcoming shows," she said. – Sinar Daily

Chinese actor Zhang Yiyang executed by firing squad after murdering underage girlfriend
Chinese singer-actor Zhang Yiyang was executed by firing squad on Dec 18, 2024, after being convicted of the murder of his 16-year-old girlfriend. He was 33 at the time of his death. According to a recently released court document from the Intermediate People's Court of Xianyang City in Shaanxi province, Zhang lured the victim – who was 15 when they started dating – into a forest in Xingping city on Feb 26, 2022. When she expressed her intention to end the relationship, a heated argument broke out, during which Zhang fatally stabbed her in the neck. Following the attack, Zhang returned home to change his clothes and disposed of both the bloodied garments and the victim's mobile phone by throwing them into a river. He then checked into a hotel, where he attempted to take his own life but was discovered by a staff member who alerted the police. The court described Zhang's actions as extremely violent and socially harmful. His pattern of emotional manipulation, including repeated threats of suicide to control the victim, further influenced the court's decision to uphold his death sentence after a failed appeal. The case sent shockwaves across mainland China. It marks the first time a celebrity in the country was legally executed for a criminal offense. In the wake of the news, netizens slammed the posthumous release of Zhang's film Jie You Yin Sheng Guan, which premiered in March this year. Users on Douban (a Chinese online database for film, books, music and more), also bombarded the film's page with one-star ratings, condemning its release given that its lead actor had been executed for the murder of an underage girl.
