A Trail-Tested Packing List for Your Outdoor Summer Adventures

In my experience, high-tech fabrics are hard to pull off with dignity. Still, certain situations demand them–like a canoe trip I took recently in New York's Adirondack Mountains. When our guide emailed a packing list in advance, I braced for the worst. Merino-wool socks, sure, that makes sense. But do I really need a moisture-wicking shacket?
The list ended up being reasonable. I found I already possessed most of what I'd need for an early-summer paddle through the wilderness. Over the years certain items of functional clothing and gear have entered my rotation and stayed there. They've worn well. They've performed well—but, crucially, they're not trying too hard. Most of these items would (and do) pass for ordinary apparel on city streets or at the beach. They're all eminently packable, whatever your summer travel plans might be.

York County launches mobile alert system at 5 beaches

Jul. 5—A brand-new mobile alert system is available at five southern Maine beaches. Created by the York County Emergency Management Agency, the system will send mobile alerts to beachgoers in Kennebunk, Ogunquit, Old Orchard Beach, Wells and York. The emergency alerts include severe weather, missing children and surf advisories. It's designed to be convenient, York County Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Chris McCall said. Beachgoers can sign up for the alert system during the day and sign out when they leave. For those who live in participating oceanfront communities year-round, the alert system is always available. "These alerts can help people make faster, more informed decisions about their safety," McCall said. Keeping beachgoers informed about dangerous situations was difficult before the alert system, McCall said. Now, officials can send a text directly to a person's phone, informing them of danger in real time. The alert system has grown in the past year, with over 4,000 sign-ups for the Beach Lists across all five communities, compared with less than 200 sign-ups last year. "We're proud of the growth and momentum behind this important public safety initiative," McCall said. "The signups show the value of the system for both public safety officials and tourists who want to stay informed." As Maine residents and tourists flock to the beaches this summer, McCall urges beachgoers to sign up for the alert system. "It's easy, free and keeps you connected to important safety updates from local officials," McCall said. The floods have devastated a touchstone of Texas culture: Summer camp

KERRVILLE, Texas — For generations, the summer camps of the Texas Hill Country have been an oasis, a call to adventure, and a rite of passage for families from every corner of the state and beyond. They are so beloved that some parents reserve spots when their children are born. Roughly two dozen camps dot the landscape up and down the cooling Guadalupe River and its tributaries, where children have flocked each summer for more than a century to canoe and kayak, to swim and fish and learn archery, to reunite with old friends.

Mom Is ‘Over' Catering to Her Daughter Whenever She Tries to Visit Her: ‘Lame Excuses with No Definite Dates'

A Reddit user explained that her two adult daughters have very different planning styles when it comes to her visiting them 'I never get a response from one for days, while the other has her response for us to do things with grandkids within a day,' the mom wrote of her daughters' contrasting behaviors Her July 3 Reddit post has attracted nearly 1,500 responsesA frustrated mother is at a crossroads with one of her adult daughters when it comes to making travel plans to visit her. The mom explained on Reddit's 'Am I the A------' forum that her two daughters, who are both married and have children, live a four-hour flight away — and that planning with each of them is very different. 'Every time my husband and I make plans to visit our adult girls I never get a response from one for days, while the other has her response for us to do things with grandkids within a day,' the woman wrote. She also said she gives them at least a 30-day notice before any visit. 'There's other family we visit with,' she said of why planning is important for these visits. 'Seven days before the trip and still just lame excuses with no definite dates. I'm just totally over catering to this daughter.' 'My husband on the other hand acts like planning makes no difference and likes to just go with the flow, but I like some idea of where and when to visit,' she continued, adding that her daughter sends eleventh-hour texts. 'I'm over feeling rushed for the last minute 'Well, if you can make it' plans because then I look like the bad guy if we can't break other family plans to see grandkids,' the mom said, before asking if she's wrong for feeling tired of catering to one daughter whenever making travel plans to see family. The July 3 Reddit post has attracted nearly 1,500 responses, with opinions being mixed about whether the mom is the 'a------.' '[You're the a------] for the tone. 'Everyone else caters to me and behaves exactly as I require them to, so why can't she?' is all I can hear,' one reader replied, while another said, 'It's wild how far y'all bend over backward to turn her into the bad guy just because she's the mom in this situation.' Another Redditor offered a solution, commenting, 'Make plans with the daughter who responds and simply tell the other what your plans are. Then take a breath. You are not the bad guy.'
