In her opening speech, Her Excellency Eng. Lamia Al Hussan Al Shamsi, Director of SDD, emphasised the critical role of geographic information systems in urban planning, infrastructure management, environmental monitoring, and public services. She described GIS as a key enabler of sustainable development guided by clear visions and strategic planning. Her Excellency also reaffirmed SDD's commitment to strengthening this vital sector, empowering its workforce, aligning collaborative efforts, and investing in initiatives that improve quality of life and advance digital integration across the emirate.
In this context, Her Excellency highlighted the Mada Geographic Data Platform, launched by SDD during GITEX 2024, as a key step toward advancing geospatial data sharing across the UAE. Mada is a centralised, continuously updated database that enables seamless exchange of geographic information between government entities. This facilitates more effective spatial planning, streamlines government processes, and enhances the quality of public services, ultimately supporting the emirate's economic growth.

His Excellency Obaid Saeed Al Tunaiji, Director General of Sharjah City Municipality, affirmed that the Municipality's participation in the forum reflects its commitment to sharing its expertise and showcasing its projects in the field of geographic information systems. E-commerce sales in Saudi Arabia via ' Mada ' cards during the first quarter of 2025 reached their highest levels ever, totaling more than SAR69.3 billion (around $18.5 billion), achieving an annual growth of 56 percent, and an increase of approximately SAR24.9 billion compared to the same period in 2024, during which sales reached SAR44.4 billion, according to the statistical bulletin issued by the Saudi Central Bank for May. The report, carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), indicated that the number of transactions executed via Mada cards exceeded 370 million during the first quarter, while sales achieved a quarterly growth of 26 percent, an increase of approximately SAR14.1 billion, compared to SAR55.2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024. Measuring monthly performance, e-commerce sales via Mada reached approximately SAR27.4 billion in May, registering an 18 percent growth from the previous month, when sales reached SAR23.3 billion, with transactions exceeding 147 million. The data showed a cumulative growth of 31.3 percent during the period from January to May 2025, an increase of approximately SAR6.5 billion, compared to sales of SAR20.9 billion in January. The UAE contributed six technical papers, highlighting national priorities in artificial intelligence, training and airspace innovation. The conference welcomed 690 participants representing 98 associations. Ahmed Ibrahim Al Jallaf, Assistant Director-General of the Air Navigation Services Sector at the GCAA, told the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that the UAE's submissions received wide acclaim and addressed integration of AI in air traffic control, modern training frameworks, zero-bureaucracy management, and advanced technologies adopted as global best practices. Recommendations from these papers were adopted into IFATCA's agenda, with one paper set to be developed as a global case study.
