Brake Lights on the Front of Your Car? They're Being Studied—and Could Prevent More Crashes

The scenario reads like this: you're in your car, stopped at an intersection—but cross traffic isn't required to stop. You want to pull out, either to go straight through the intersection or to turn, and look over and see a car approaching from one side. Is that driver slowing down? Their blinker is on, but what is their intention? Do they see you stopped there? You can only see the front of the approaching vehicle, so all of that is pretty much a mystery—because the brake lights that'd tell you more, well, are on the other side of the car.
You seem to have time to pull out and complete your maneuver—do you take the risk of a potential crash, assuming that approaching vehicle is slowing down (giving you more time to act)? This is a nearly everyday occurrence for most American drivers, and many of them do end up taking that risk and becoming another crash statistic. A study suggests that there might be an easy and immediate solution to this guessing game of vehicular roulette: brake lights visible from the front and sides of new vehicles.
It's not a totally crazy or infeasible idea, as the story from ZME Science points out. It can be difficult to discern whether another vehicle's nose is dipping because it's slowing, especially from a distance; many modern vehicles boast body control that snuffs out that behavior almost entirely compared to, say, large land yachts from the 1970s. In other words, the most obvious way to determine what another vehicle is doing—if you can only see it from the front—is to rely on some sort of indicator at the front and sides of vehicles that could signal to other motorists and pedestrians whether or not it's slowing down. Again, such information is critical to cross traffic and especially to pedestrians.
While you might be thinking this thinking would lead to a bright red light fitted to the front and sides of a vehicle—which is illegal in the FMVSS and further still by many state laws on forward and side lighting—the study by Graz University of Austria, Comenius University of Slovakia, and the Bonn Institute for Legal and Traffic Psychology of Germany suggests that these forward brake lights be green in color. A logical idea considering that a front green light would automatically be associated with the sign that you're good to go, just like a standard traffic light. The study suggests that front-facing brake indicator lights—not even including side brake lights—could reduce intersection collisions by 17 percent and could possibly lessen injury related to those types of crashes by 25 percent.
The way this study simulated potential real-world results was by recreating real crashes. In each scenario, three different reaction times were tested between 0.5 second to 1.5 seconds. The faster two of the three reaction times showed between nearly 8 percent to 17 percent of those simulated accidents could have been avoided all together. For nearly 26 percent of those same accidents, the injury severity dropped as the average crash speeds were reduced to around 18 mph from an original high of nearly 28 mph. 10 mph might not seem like much, but that equals to just over a 44 percent difference in kinetic energy for the 4,400-pound weight of your average American vehicle.
We're skeptical of the conclusion drawn in ZME Science by the author suggesting it'd be easy to implement a new light on a modern CAN Bus or Zonal communications vehicle and holding optimism in the speed of NHTSA to implement such a change. More likely, any changes would apply only to newer vehicles going forward, not necessarily retroactively added to existing cars on American roads—older vehicles might simply not support an extra lamp setup, for a variety of technical reasons.
Then there is the challenge of getting a green front light legal for use via NHTSA regulations, let alone local laws on lighting. NHTSA and the FMVSS section 108 only allow for white or clear lenses or lighting for forward illumination and white or amber color or lighting for side and signal lighting. Auxiliary lighting like daytime running, driving lights, or fog lights can be white or amber in color, too. Any other color is not legal on the front or sides of a vehicle.
While Mercedes-Benz has an 'OK' to run turquoise lights—indicating a vehicle in true full-self driving mode on SAE Level 3 prototype vehicles—in a couple of states, this is technically not legal for the rest of the U.S. and is an exception. For something like this to be implemented nationwide, presumably as a required safety fitment, it would need literal Congressional approval and that's only recently come to allow updates to the rules on truly adaptive lighting like that offered for years overseas as part of HR 3684—aka the 2022 Infrastructure Bill—during the Biden Administration.
All of which is to say, the FMVSS will have the final say. Given how today, that same regulatory framework makes it illegal to install LED replacement bulbs in headlight housings originally designed for HID, halogen, or incandescent bulbs, and is only just now being updated to accommodate high tech adaptive lighting technology that's been available elsewhere in the world for years, don't hold your breath that your next car might sprout a set of fancy new signaling lamps.

2025 Rivian R1T Tri-Motor Max Tested: Yep, It's Quick

Yes, we recognize that ultra-quick EVs are no longer novel, but every time we got into our 2025 Rivian R1T Tri-Motor Max and stomped on the accelerator, we couldn't help but marvel at the sensational acceleration. Yes, the proliferation of high-horsepower EVs means that it's not so rare for a three-ton-plus truck to launch to 60 mph in less than three seconds. That doesn't mean we still weren't gobsmacked every time the R1T's chunky tires—part of the All-Terrain package—managed to propel the truck's 7005 pounds to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds, even if they were howling in protest the whole way. While it may not look it, the 2025 Rivian R1T is updated considerably from previous model years. For starters, while the Dual-Motor setup carries on with 533- and 665-hp variants, the range-topping Quad-Motor setup now makes 1025 horsepower—190 more than before. This new Tri-Motor model combines the Dual-Motor's single front unit and the Quad-Motor's two-motor rear to spit out 850 horsepower and 1103 pound-feet of torque—beating last-year's Quad by 15 horses and 195 pound-feet. At least in part, the extra power can be explained by the use of new motors that are now fully designed and manufactured by Rivian. view exterior photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Hold On Even while wearing a set of 20-inch 275/65R-20 Pirelli Scorpion N All Terrain Plus tires, the Tri-Motor accelerates with fury. Using Rivian's new launch-control system, the Tri-Motor is just a tenth of a second behind the quad-motor Tesla Cybertruck Beast's 2.6 second 60-mph run and matched its 11.0-second quarter-mile time, with the Rivian trapping at 123 mph to the Tesla's 119 mph. HIGHS: Devastatingly quick acceleration, composed ride, everyday practicality. Activating the launch-control system is simple enough: Switch the truck into Sport mode, then tap the checkered flag on the screen and confirm your ill intent. As the truck squats in preparation for the launch, hold the brake and floor the accelerator—as long as you've got the wheel pointed straight, three lights and a chime indicate that you're ready for takeoff. Then, it's as simple as releasing the brake pedal and keeping your cool as the scenery blurs in your peripherals. view exterior photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver With all that acceleration on tap, braking numbers are equally important. Outside of panic stops (for cops or otherwise), you'll rarely need to actually use the R1T's brakes, but if you do, our test truck stopped from 70 mph in 183 feet. That's on par with a Ford F-150 XLT Supercrew—in a vehicle weighing nearly 1400 pounds more. When you'e not panic-braking, you'll be using the R1T's three levels of liftoff regen: Low, Standard, and High. Unofficially, we'd label them as High, Higher, and Highest, with even the least aggressive bringing the truck to a full stop, as Rivian doesn't let you coast. Battery Trio Rivian offers three battery sizes for the updated R1T lineup: Standard, Large, and Max. The 93-kWh Standard pack still stores an EPA-estimated 270 miles of range but now uses a lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry (the same as Rivian's delivery vans), which the automaker says helps reduce complexity and ease service. The Large and Max packs have both been reengineered with a new die-cast carrier that reduces weight and complexity compared with the previous aluminum construction. Usable energy in the Large pack is now 109 kWh—20 fewer than before—with the Max pack at 140 kWh. view interior Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver The Dual-Motor sits at both ends of the range spectrum with the Standard pack offering an estimated 270 miles of range and the Max pack providing up to 420 miles. Equipped with the All-Terrain package and the Max battery, our Tri-Motor carried an EPA estimate of 329 miles. LOWS: Sticker-shock price, overreliance on screens, still no coasting? Dynamically, the R1T still has everything we liked about the pre-facelift model. The steering wheel offers decent communication, and cornering is flat, even if the tires did give way at 0.79 g on our skidpad. Unlike the 2025 R1S, which received significant updates to its chassis, changes to the R1T's driving dynamics are limited to minor suspension alterations—specifically, updated bushings and top mounts. But unlike the R1S, whose ride we've consistently lambasted, the chassis control on the R1T remains a high mark. The smooth ride is courtesy of air springs, independent suspensions front and rear, and hydraulic anti-roll control that make the R1T one of the best-riding pickups on the market. Unfortunately, our biggest gripe with the R1T's suspension—the noise—continues to annoy as sharp impacts send a loud thud through the cabin. view interior Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Interior Aspects Despite its mid-size proportions, the R1T's cabin's open layout lends an airy feel. Just as with its Tri-Motor R1S sibling, our R1T test model featured open-pore wood trim on the dash and door trim. The floor mats and seat stitching have a plaid pattern. It's no secret that the R1T is a practical pickup. There's 14.6 inches of ground clearance, 43.1-inch water-fording capability, and a towing capacity up to 11,000 pounds—your range may vary though. Plus, there's the storage. In addition to what the truck bed offers, the R1T's frunk has 10 cubic feet of storage, and the gear tunnel, Rivian's ingenious cargo area behind the rear doors, adds a further 12 cubic feet of lockable storage space. view interior Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Now for the bad stuff. No one on staff at Car and Driver has ever worked as a Silicon Valley tech executive (at least that we're aware of), but the idea that something is better just because it's different doesn't resonate with us. Sure, Rivian has more say over its software when it controls everything, but is that really better for the consumer than just giving them access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto? Everything from adjusting the steering wheel and side mirror positions to activating the heated/cooled seats to moving the HVAC vents is done via the central infotainment screen. Rivian says it simplified the R1T's computer platform by reducing the number of ECUs in the car from 17 to seven and by removing more than 1.6 miles of wiring from the truck, which is certainly good, but when it comes to actually operating the vehicle, we'd argue for greater simplifying via some physical controls. With the Tri-Motor setup, the Max battery, and the all-terrain package—along with $4500 worth of aesthetic options—our R1T test truck rang in at $110,150. Still, even at that high price point, the updated R1T combines seriously impressive practicality and impressive dynamic control. BMW Recalls Four EV Models for Potential Loss of Drive Power

BMW is recalling over 70,000 EVs from 2022–2025 model years because of a software issue that can cause a loss of power while driving. The recall includes 35,414 units of the i4, 25,280 units of the iX, 5484 units of the i7, and 4674 units of the i5. BMW will fix the software either at an authorized dealership or via an over-the-air update. Several electric BMW models are being recalled due to an error with the software for the electric motor that can cause the cars to lose power, including while the car is in motion. Over 70,000 vehicles are included in the recall, according to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The BMW iX SUV is next, with 25,280 units included from the 2022 to 2024 model years, and 5484 BMW i7 sedans are involved from the 2023 and 2024 model years. According to the NHTSA documents, the electric motor software "may erroneously cause a shutdown of the high-voltage system," in turn causing the vehicle to lose power. The unwanted action comes as a result of the software mistakenly identifying a "double-isolation condition," leading it to display a red warning message and warning symbol on the dashboard screens around 15 to 20 seconds before cutting power. While NHTSA notes that power steering and braking are unaffected by the shutdown of the high-voltage system, it does state that if this shutdown happens while driving, it could increase the risk of a crash. NHTSA says vehicle assembly information and supplier production records were consulted to determine the dates of vehicles that might be affected. BMW The investigation began after a series of warranty claims in 2021 and 2022 associated with the electric drive motor. Following further investigations in 2023 and 2024, "the analyses suggested that vehicle software could not determine, whether a detected double-isolation condition was, in fact, a true double-isolation condition, which warranted a high-voltage system shutdown or, was, in fact, only a single-isolation condition," according to the NHTSA documents. To prevent the risk of electric shock, the software then turned off the high-voltage system. BMW decided to begin a voluntary safety recall on June 6. The automaker says it believes it has received around 43 warranty claims involving the shutdown of the drive motors at speeds over 20 mph. BMW received no reports of accidents or injuries caused by this problem. BMW will update the software for the electric motor for affected vehicles, either at dealerships or via an over-the-air update. Owners will be contacted by mail by August 5 and instructed to take their vehicle to a BMW dealer, with the option to perform the update over the air instead. In the meantime, owners can check the NHTSA recalls website to see if their vehicle is included in the recall.
