MyKom arrives in Sarawak, out to support mainstream media, not against it

Borneo Post12 hours ago
KUCHING (Aug 5): Media Komunikasi Nasional (MyKom) has officially expanded its operations here, positioning itself as an alternative media platform that supports and complements mainstream media, rather than competing with it.
According to the Prime Minister's political secretary Datuk Azman Abidin, MyKom remains a credible and authoritative source within Malaysia's media and public communication landscape.
'I am confident that although it is alternative, MyKom will be recognised, authoritative, and become a key reference in the realm of news and public communication in the country,' he said at the launch here yesterday.
He pointed out that in an era saturated with information and growing demands for timely and accurate communication, the need for impactful messaging at the state and community levels had become more critical than ever.
'The launch of MyKom today is a clear signal that Sarawak is also taking this need seriously. I urge MyKom to move forward with courage and integrity, always anchored by the interests of the people.
'Do not be afraid to be a voice of principle. Do not hesitate to highlight stories from rural communities, stories of everyday people, and those that often go unheard in the mainstream media,' he said.
Apart from that, Azman also stressed that the media's influence should be used to unite the people rather than divide, and to educate rather than to provoke.
'Media content should aim to strengthen social values, rather than merely chasing viewership or popularity.'
Meanwhile, MyKom Sarawak managing director Zulrusdi Mohd Hol said the platform would utilise various social media channels including Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and X to disseminate news content.
'As a responsible new media outlet, we uphold Article 10 of the Federal Constitution which guarantees the right to speak, express, assemble, and associate.
'We also operate in compliance with the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Sedition Act,' he said.
Zulrusdi said MyKom's mission could be best summarised through a quote by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof during the closing of the Sarawak Journalists Conference last month: 'Truth must be spoken, dignity defended, and hope never extinguished.'
Among those present at the event yesterday were MyKom Sarawak advisor Dato Sri Hafsah Harun and MyKom Sarawak chairman Nazib Johari.

Kiandee suggests specific provision in Standing Orders for vote of no confidence

KUALA LUMPUR: An opposition lawmaker has proposed that a specific provision on a vote of no confidence be formally included in the Standing Orders of the Dewan Rakyat. Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran) said, at present, such motions can only be submitted under Standing Order 27(3), which applies to all government motions and requires the approval of the Dewan Rakyat speaker. He said under Standing Order 15, such motions could be bypassed in favour of government business, which is given priority. "The time has come for this Parliament to introduce a dedicated provision allowing for a formal vote of no confidence. "There are two key elements that must be specified in the Standing Orders — first, that it can be done, and second, that it must be conducted by secret ballot. "Currently, there are only two instances where secret ballots are permitted — during the election of the speaker and the deputy speakers. "Therefore, a specific provision must be institutionalised both legally and within the Standing Orders. I urge the House Committee to consider this proposal," he said during the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat. Kiandee, who is a former deputy speaker, added that countries such as New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Australia already have specific parliamentary mechanisms for no-confidence votes. He said Malaysia should emulate this if it is serious about upholding the rule of law and parliamentary integrity. "I know the current speaker says the opposition is free to submit a vote of no confidence and ensure it is tabled. Some government MPs say if the opposition is brave enough, they can table it — but we disagree with that view. "We must look beyond the current situation. These statements come at a time when the government enjoys a comfortable majority and when voting is not conducted in secret. "If we are serious about elevating the institution of Parliament — not just for this session, but for future ones as well — then real reform is needed." Kiandee also called for amendments to anti-party provisions under the Federal Constitution, which he said had failed to fulfil their original purpose. He cited the case of six Bersatu members of parliament who declared support for the government last year, yet Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul ruled that their seats would not be vacated. When challenged in court, the decision did not favour the opposition — not based on the facts of the case, but because the speaker's ruling was protected from judicial review under Article 63(1) of the Federal Constitution. "Are we as a Parliament celebrating what has become of the anti-party hopping (provisions) meant to prevent MPs from switching allegiances? Is this really what we wanted? "The court's decision stands, but the real question is whether this outcome reflects Parliament's intent when the provisions were enacted.

Steven Sim congratulates Abdul Halim on MTUC presidency

KUALA LUMPUR: Human Resources Minister Steven Sim has congratulated Datuk Abdul Halim Mansor on his election as president of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), expressing confidence in his ability to lead the organisation. Sim said Abdul Halim's 40 years of experience in the trade union movement positioned him well to defend the rights and welfare of Malaysian workers. "I believe he will lead MTUC with wisdom and determination in upholding the dignity of workers," he said in an Instagram post today. Sim also invited the newly elected MTUC leadership to visit him at Wisma Pekerja to renew collaboration with the ministry. "MTUC remains a strategic partner in formulating fair, progressive and worker-focused policies," he said. Abdul Halim secured 227 votes to win the presidency during MTUC's recent delegates' conference, narrowly defeating Mohd Effendy Abdul Ghani of the Union of Clerical and Postal Workers of Pos Malaysia Bhd (UPCW), who garnered 218 votes. The election was held following a Court of Appeal ruling on Feb 21, which directed MTUC to have fresh leadership polls within 90 days. The re-election process was managed by a Special Joint Committee (JBK).
